ANNOUNCEMENT OF AVAILABLE POSITION

Assistant Professor, Modern Dance/Dance History JR# 5915

The Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of New Mexico anticipates a faculty opening in the Dance area beginning August 2006. RANK: Assistant Professor, Modern Dance/Dance History, commensurate with qualifications. Salary: $42,000. This is a probationary position leading to a tenure decision.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Service: The candidate selected will assume leadership in the further development of the undergraduate and graduate dance/choreography curriculum; will mentor and advise undergraduate dance majors and graduate dance students; and will direct dance concerts in rotation with other dance faculty members.

Teaching: Three courses per semester at the undergraduate and graduate level are all levels of Modern, and Dance History and Criticism with an established career in performance, choreography, dance reconstruction, and publications. The successful candidate will also be able to teach one or more of the following areas: all levels of Modern, Preferred Graham, Limon, Horton, Cunningham techniques, improvisation, and choreography.

Artistic/Scholarly Activity: Choreography for department dance concerts or theatre productions, dance for video, dance reconstruction, and/or scholarly research.

Minimum qualifications:
M.A. in Dance by appointment start date in the areas of modern dance, dance history, criticism and theory.
Evidence of experience teaching dance at all levels.
Evidence of experience as a choreographer/dance reconstruction/dance historian.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. or Ph.D. pending in Dance by appointment start date or equivalent professional experience.
Experience in teaching dance history, criticism and theory in a university/conservatory setting. Intensive professional experience dancing and teaching.
Extensive experience as a choreographer/dance reconstructionist for professionally staged dance concerts.
Proficient in one or two of the following dance courses: All levels of Modern, preferred Graham, Limon, Horton, Cunningham techniques, improvisation, dance for video, dance reconstruction, choreography.

Strength of preparation and promise of creativity and/or scholarship.
Collegiality.

Assistant Professor of Performance Theory/Theatre History and Criticism, JR# 5914

 

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF PERFORMANCE THEORY/THEATRE HISTORY AND CRITICISM: The University of New Mexico, Department of Theatre and Dance, invites applications for a faculty position in performance theory and theatre history beginning in August 2006. This is a probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching in both the undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA, MFA) programs in theatre and in dance. Courses would include: Theatre History I and II, Performance Theory, Introduction to Graduate Studies, Theories of Theatre, and specialized topics in criticism, Candidate will also be responsible for sustaining a strong research profile, serving on school and university committees, and supervising graduate theses. Salary $42,000.

Minimum Qualifications : All applications are expected to have completed the PhD or DFA degrees by appointment start date; have a record of teaching at the university level; and evidence of scholarship as found in written academic work such as conference papers, reviews, published articles and/or chapters, etc.

Preferred Qualifications: PhD with specialization in Theatre History/Criticism, with focus on Performance Studies, Latino/Hispanic Theatre, or Dramaturgy; teaching experience at the university level above Teaching Assistant level with proven ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses; strength of preparation and promise of scholarship, and proven ability to advise and direct undergraduate and graduate scholarly work.

DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE & DANCE: The Department of Theatre & Dance has approximately 120 undergraduate majors and 50 graduate students. The faculty of 17 full time and 15 part time instructors offers a diverse curriculum of courses leading to the BA, MA, and MFA degrees. An MFA degree in Dance Choreography/Performance is currently in development. The Department presents six major productions (four theatre and two dance) each academic year and supports a variety of laboratory productions in its Experimental Theatre and in other venues. One of the Department's goal is to be inclusive of other cultures in its programs, curriculum and its student body, particularly as it relates to courses and activities in the areas of Latin America, U.S. Hispanic and Native American culture.
