New Era Art Show Takes Shape

The College of Fine Arts Alumni Chapter is sponsoring the New Era Art show May 19-June 16 at the prestigious 5.1.6. Magnifico! Artspace in downtown Albuquerque. The exhibition, open to any artist who has attended UNM, aims to reveal the course of the arts in the new millennium, showcasing art that displays inventive use of imagery and materials.

In Memoriam

RITA ANGEL
1949-2000

Rita Angel, professor of music (1976-2000), was a mainstay; an agile, talented pianist who could sight-read anything and eagerly learned music in any style. Reliable, musical and supportive, she was much in demand as an accompanist. Indeed, Rita preferred the challenges of accompanying to so or orchestral playing. She directed the Music Department's piano accompaniment degree program, offering her students her experience, intuition, musicianship and belief in them.

Rita's many achievements brought great honor to UNM, where she earned her bachelor of music degree and studied with George Robert. She was appointed to the National Endowment for the Arts Music Advisory Panel in the late 1980s, serving alongside such musical luminaries as Gunther Schuller and Joseph Polisi.

Professor Rita Angel

In 1989, Rita survived brain tumor surgery which destroyed her ability to perform, so she focused on teaching. She staunchly attended faculty meetings. After another surgery, last summer, Rita's dedication to her students kept her working. Last fall she was quite ill, yet she completed the semester. Proud of UNM, she was determined to finish her obligations here.

Her dignity in the face of illness did not falter, and she died peacefully.
