CONCERT SHOW CASES STUDENTS
Fine Arts' Finest, an annual celebration of scholarship donors and their recipients, was held January 23 in Keller Hall. By showcasing students in action, the College of Fine Arts can easily demonstrate how scholarship funds are used. Participation included representatives from almost every discipline/department. Michaela Koerner, a music and theatre double major, is the Ana Chavira Memorial Award recipient. She sang classical and musical theater pieces. Susan Erickson, master of fine arts candidate in dramatic writing, is a Thelma and Edmund Evans scholarship recipient who wrote a one-act play performed by tow other theatre students. Aaron Fry, a doctoral candidate in art history, received the Henry Luce Scholarship for Doctoral Dissertation Candidates Stydying American Art. He discussed his dissertation subject, " The Kiowa Five," Native american painters of Oklahoma.

Dance major Jessica Jahner has Daniel Blumenfeld and Friends of Dance scholarships. She choreographed and performed a piece that evoked her flamenco and modern dance training. Rounding out the evening was a Brahms movement from the Abe Franck String Quartet, made up of music students Mabio Duarte, Mariusz Kozak, James Harvey and Ben Vickers.

The Dean's Circle

Last year the College of Fine Arts created the Dean's Circle, which provides the dean with a mechanism to support students and faculty. Members of the Dean's Circle commit $1,000 or more in unrestricted funds annually to the College of Fine Arts. Dean's Circle members get invited to special events on and off campus. And their funds go to support outstanding faculty and student research projects! As of January 2000, Dean's Circle includes:

Concert Benefits Friends of Dance

The Friends of Dance (FOD) held a very successful benefit concert on January 23. Dance Professor Bill Evans, celebrating his 25th year with his own dance company, donated the wonderful concert, "Dancing for the Future." Final totals are being tallied, but the FOD Scholarship Fund certainly is several thousand dollars richer from this event. Thank you to all who supported FOD through ticket purchases.

FOD member dues support UNM dance scholarships. Memberships begin at $25 for Charter Membership, and go up to $500 or more for Elizabeth Waters Membership. Membership includes various benefits. For information, call Sara McClure at (505) 277-7320 or email smcclure@unm.edu

And good news regarding the Friends of Dance Endowment—we are within a hair's breath (make that $2,000) of reaching our $50,000 goal. When the endowment reaches that goal, the interest that it earns also will be made available for dance scholarships.

Friends of Music Enjoy Guitars

The Friends of Music (FOM) will have a busy spring! The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet presented a benefit concert on March 19. This group's work runs from classical to jazz to original compositions. On why they decided to do a FOM benefit concert, one member replied that it was a FOM-type scholarship that supported his college education in California, making it fitting for them to "give back" to the communities that support art and music education.

Friends of Music has contributed more than $20,000 to the Department of Music this year, all earmarked for scholarships. This all-volunteer group, founded more than 30 years ago, raises the bulk of its funds from annual gifts from individuals and former FOM scholarship recipients.
