SPRING 2000

Developments in information technology are challenging our efficiency and effectiveness as we communicate, educate, do business and create art. And they are raising questions.

How is the Internet and "e-commerce" impacting society? What about access? Will this new commerce create greater divisions in our society? What roles might artists fill in this new commercial environment?

When we consider storing cultural memory, do we want to save everything? Who, and with what criteria, will make these decisions? How long will we store memories?

Virtual organizations and virtual collaborative spaces are emerging with the advent of real-time, interactive environments. How do these new environments affect teaching, learning, research and scholarly activity in the arts, collaboration with those in distant places, and understanding cultural differences?

Two new research organizations in the College of Fine Arts embrace these types of questions. In this issue, you will learn about the Arts of the Americas Institute and the Arts Technology Center; their activities; how they are supporting our students, faculty and staff, and how they are partnering with community organizations. I welcome your questions, suggestions and support!
