The College of Fine Arts has been recognized throughout its sixty-five year history for developing innovative programs and for its many creative and scholarly achievements. Recently, administrators in the college articulated current strengths among our programs. I am pleased to share these with you.

  • Arts of the Americas. The College of Fine Arts offers a wide array or curricular and research programs related to regional and hemispheric arts and cultures.
  • The Department of Art and Art History has the nation's largest program in native American art history as well as the most comprehensive program in Latin American art history.
  • The Media Arts Department offers courses in Latin American cinema and sponsors the International Cinema Lecture Series, which features distinguished film and video artists and scholars from Latin America.
  • The college offers a variety of regional and hemispheric courses in art studio, dance, music and theatre for the benefit of all students at UNM. Examples include Pueblo pottery, Mexican folk dance, Chicano theatre and Native American music.
  • TheUNM Symphonic Orchestra is recognized for performing works by Mexican and other Latin American composers.
  • The Bainbridge Bunting Memorial Slide Library is developing a comprehensive digital data base of contemporary Native American artists. This resource will he available for scholars internationally on the Web.
  • The Arts of the Americas Institute is a college-based research institute that promotes recognition, acceptance, understanding and communication of the arts in the Western Hemisphere, especially cultures that have been historically marginalized.

This collection of diverse offerings is a defining characteristic of our College of Fine Arts and distinguishes it when compared to peer institution arts programs.
Photography and Printmaking.
Forty years of conscious effort have developed strong programs in photography and printmaking at UNM. The University Art Museum has one of the largest and most extensive collection of works on paper in the United States. Our graduate program in photography is ranked consistently among the top three in the country by U.S. News and World Report; our printmaking program is currently ranked seventh. Tamarind Institute, recognized internationally as a leader in fine-art lithography, offers a variety of education, research, exhibition and creative programs at UNM and throughout the world. Together, these programs are a distinguishing feature at our University.

John Donald Robb Composers’ Symposium.
This annual event brings to UNM internationally-known composers for the benefit of UNM and New Mexico communities. During the twenty-nine year history of this program, participating composers have included John Cage, Milton Babbitt, George Crumb, Lukas Foss, Ernst Krenek and many others.

Flamenco Dance.
The Department of Theatre and Dance offers the most comprehensive curricula in Flamenco dance of any university in the world, with a sequence of technique courses, workshops and performances. In addition, the department hosts the annual International Festival Flamenco.

Media Arts Department.
The Media Arts Department collaborates with a variety of academic departments at UNM to offer interdisciplinary courses in theory and practice, and in film and video, which are combined with readings in philosophy, literature and cultural studies.

Wrinkle Writing.
This playwriting-in-the-schools program provides professional development training for elementary and secondary language arts and English teachers while providing their students with a variety of theatre experiences, especially creative drama.

Arts Technology Center.
The Arts Technology Center is a college-based research center dedicated to research and artistic production in the area of new media and emerging technologies. The work at the center creates new venues for the experience of digital expression and encourages the development and creative use of new technologies in society.

It has been my pleasure to work with the people responsible for these programs during the past eleven years. I hope you, too, are proud to be affiliated with our College of Fine Arts.
