SPRING 2001 |
|
On February 3, 2001, the Music Department formally renamed its largest rehearsal hall, B120, the Kurt Frederick Rehearsal Room, thanks to the efforts of Artemus Edwards, professor emeritus; Karl Hinterbichler, professor of music, and Jo Margaret Gore Farris, class of 54. Kurt memorabilia, news papers clippings and articles enlarged for easy reading decorated the walls.
A commemorative plaque and picture now hang outside the room. |

Dr. Steven Block, chair of |
Dr. Kurt Frederick, who came to UNM in 1942, founded and conducted the University Chorus, the UNM Symphony and the Albuquerque Youth Symphony and taught violin and viola. |
|
His accomplishments included the world-premier of Schöenbergs Survivor From Warsaw and bringing the then-young violinist Itzhak Perlman to Albuquerque to play with the symphony. But it was his profound knowledge of music and his unwavering dedication to his students and colleagues that touched so many. |

Some one hundred family, former colleagues, students and friends listened to brief reminiscences by Don McRae, former dean; A.W. Wall, former Opera Southwest colleague; Leonard Felberg, former department colleague, and former students Farris, Kathie Jarrett and Dale Kempter, director of the Albuquerque Youth Symphony. Hinterbichler read a letter from former student Bill Osborne, from Germany. The dedication publicly launched the fund-raising effort for the Kurt Frederick Fellowship. When fully funded, the ongoing endowment will benefit an outstanding graduate string player who will serve joint appointments to the UNM Symphony and the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. |
