Adrienne Clancy earned a masters degree in dance history in 1995 and already has traveled around the world as a professional dancer. A few years ago, she established her own company, based in Washington, D.C., and continues to tour extensively. Still, Clancy finds time to conduct college workshops and work with non-professionals and young dancers in urban community centers, fulfilling a desire to expose people to dance who might not otherwise have that opportunity. For phenomenal achievement in a short time, the College honored Clancy with the new Outstanding Recent Graduate Award during last Decembers graduation. Clancy exhibited her interest in bringing dance into the community in her masters thesis, entitled, Three Examples of Competitive Dance in Urban Environments: Voguing, Break Dancing and Capoeira. The thesis described the importance of these dances to the community and to street dancing. These are examples of competitive dance that unites young boys. For example, they might break dance against each other instead of using guns, says Judith Bennahum, professor of dance and Clancys thesis adviser. |

Following graduation, Clancy joined the Bella Lewitsky dance company, based in Los Angeles. When Lewitsky retired, Clancy, a modern dancer and choreographer, joined the Liz Lehrman Dance Co. in Washington, D.C., before starting her own company. Her work, innovative and haunting, has a strong partnering element. |
