SPRING 2003

Marilyn Tyler and Andrea Clayton

UNM Opera Theatre Program

This last year has been an exciting time for the UNM Opera Theatre Program. The program students and faculty, in coordination with the Department of Theatre and Dance, spent many months preparing for the Spring 2003 opera production of The Marriage of Figaro, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This May, the Friends of Music honored acclaimed opera artist Marilyn Tyler, professor of voice and director of opera studies, on her 20-year anniversary with the program. A champagne brunch held at University House celebrated the occasion, followed by the final performance of the opera. In January 2003, opera students Andrea Clayton and Samantha Phillips competed in the National Opera Association's Vocal Competition.

Phillips, a junior in music education, was one of the top six finalists. Clayton, a senior in the Music Department, placed first in the competition, winning a full scholarship to a summer opera program in Graz, Austria. She also received the association's annual Legacy Award, which honors a talented minority student. This recognition should help her to join Tyler's other distinguished alumni who have gone on to prestigious careers in opera, including famed tenor Kurt Streit and the beautiful soprano Devonne Douglas of the Metropolitan Opera Company.

Opera lovers Florence K. and Charles V. White have shown their ongoing support of the UNM Opera Theatre Program through a series of generous gift annuities, which provide them a lifetime income. Gifts such as the Whites' are vital to the continuation of high-quality opera productions in the future. If you would like to learn more about similar planned giving options and/or provide other forms of financial support to the Opera Performance Fund, please contact the College of Fine Arts Development Office at (505) 277-7320.

Music Prep School Celebrates 10 Years

In March 2003, the UNM Music Prep School celebrated its 10th anniversary with a performance in Keller Hall by current and former students and Music Prep faculty. The Music Prep School, which was initiated by UNM Professor of Music Education Ellen McCullough-Brabson, provides an enriching music education program for pre-school and elementary students and members of the New Mexico community. The program started with about 200 students and has grown to more than 500 students per semester, ranging from infants to sixth graders.

The school has been self-sustaining since the beginning, with the UNM Department of Music providing the needed space and staff assistance.

CFA Participates in UNM Day
at the Legislature

The College of Fine Arts was well represented during the UNM Day at the State Legislature in February. Ramsey Lofton, CFA service learning coordinator, assembled a College display that included information on the CFA departments, research units and special programs.

The multimedia display highlighted video clips from the Departments of Theatre & Dance and Media Arts, a CD music sampler produced by the Department of Music and a PowerPoint presentation by P.L.A.C.E., the College's new arts-in-service program. The Arts Technology Center also had a table with a plasma-screen display, loaned by Digital Pueblo Project partner Vizeon, showing various local and UNM animation projects. During the lunch break, Mariachi Lobo and Alma Flamenca performed to a large audience. The College contributed greatly to UNM's overall presence at the state capitol, receiving numerous compliments on the presentations and performances.
