In July, the Honorable Juan Manuel Solana, consul of Mexico, hosted a reception honoring New Mexico Attorney General Patricia Madrid for her work on behalf of the Mexican community, which earned her the El Premio Ohtii award. The evening also featured a fund-raising auction of Naret's work, co-hosted by the College. Thus far, sale of the art has raised nearly $6,000, with an additional $4,000 match from the office of Eliseo Torres, UNM vice president for student affairs. Additional Naret artwork is still available. If interested, please call (505) 277-9377 or e-mail cfadevel@unm.edu. Foundation Helps Create New Music Education Scholarship
Professor Ellen McCullough-Brabson, chair of the UNM Music Prep School Steering Committee and former UNM Regent's Lecturer, recently retired from UNM after a 30-year music education career. In honor of her work with the Prep School and to support students wishing to study music education, the Brabson Library and Educational Foundation has made a generous gift to establish the Ellen McCullough-Brabson Music Education Scholarship. With this donation and additional gifts from other donors, the fund is well on the way to the initial endowment goal of $15,000.
McCullough-Brabson received her bachelor of music degree from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and her master of music degree and doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Arizona. Her post-doctoral work was in ethnomusicology at the University of Washington. At UNM, she was instrumental in creating the Prep School, which offers Saturday music classes to local grade school children. During her career, she received numerous awards and honors, including the Bravos Award for "Outstanding Arts Educator" from the Albuquerque Arts Alliance in 1996. She was also a Regents Lecturer. She plans to continue her music education work through writing and presenting workshops.
