Department of Media Arts

Film Editing The Department of Media Arts, which offers the Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts, is dedicated to the study and practice of film, video, and related media as art. In the hope of understanding and enhancing the immense role of moving-image art in today's world, Media Arts offers the student a broad foundation in the purposes of art and culture.

Most courses required in Media Arts are in history, criticism, and theory, but enough are offered in production to encourage the student to make an important start as an artist. Former students have become writers, directors, and editors of feature-length fiction films, documentaries, and video works that have achieved commercial and critical success.

The Department of Media Arts fosters in the student an outlook that is international, transcultural, and interdisciplinary. Moving-image art arises in every region of the globe. And an array of intellectual and artistic disciplines shape studies and practices in the media arts. Media Arts students establish ties to other arts in the College of Fine Arts as well as to disciplines in Arts and Sciences and other UNM Colleges.

The Department of Media Arts organizes the International Cinema Lecture Series during the regular academic year. This event brings distinguished scholars and film and video artists from all over the world to our university to present lectures and workshops from diverse cultural perspectives.
