Tamarind Institute, recognized for its crucial role in the development of American printmaking, offers educational and creative opportunities to students and artists from around the world. The Professional Printer Training Program prepares students for careers as master printers or university professors through courses in theory and technique, the history of prints, collaboration with artists, and business practices. A limited number of students are able to further develop their skills through internships in Tamarind's professional atelier. Short-term workshops are offered for artists and teachers and, in cooperation with the Department of Art and Art History, graduate students may enroll in a collaborative lithography course taught at Tamarind.

printer at work Research is an integral part of the Institute's mission. These activities include publication of critical, historical, and technical information related to the field; sponsorship of symposia; development of new techniques; and creative exploration.

In the atelier, artists from diverse backgrounds collaborate with Tamarind master and intern printers to create fine lithographs which are then sold to partially support the Institute's varied programs. Exhibitions of these lithographs have been shown worldwide and many Tamarind lithographs are included in the collections of major museums in the United States. The University Art Museum holds a complete archive of Tamarind lithographs.
