ART HISTORY COURSES

ART HI 201.330 HISTORY OF ART I (July 5 - July 30)

Instructor: R. Hernandez MTWRF 12:50-2:50 CA 1020

This course is meant to be an introduction to the history of ancient world art. Although we will primarily be focusing on historical periods and cultural areas associated with the “Western” world, we will, at various points in the class, consider so-called “non-Western” regions, including the pre-contact Americas , parts of Africa , the Middle East , and Asia . The lectures, given the four week format of this class, will not follow a chronological order, as presented in the Stokstad text or as is typically done in most survey courses of this nature. This class will follow a thematic approach, that is, each week, we will be discussing a particular framing theme found in every culture and historical period, which compels myriad artistic expressions. The four topics to be addressed include the following: The Sacred, Death, Narrative, and The Quotidian. The requirements for this course are the following: daily attendance, coming to class having done all the readings, having reviewed the weekly slide lists, participation in class discussions, and successful completion of two in-class slide quizzes and short essay exercises. There will be no midterm exam, final exam, or research paper. Special fee $18.
