Instructor: J. Neimanas MW 1:00-3:50 OFF CAMPUS

This will take place during class time. Students will alter the location and photograph the incident. Students are to bring props or equipment necessary to alter the factual. "My work was born private; it grew up to be public...Our projects melt into, and out of, the site not as a form but as an event, and as a trajectory for events. Our public spaces are flows from private to public and back again; our public places break down into and fly away in private capsules. We build one world within another: landscape within architecture, the urban within the rural, the virtual within the actual, and vice versa. Our projects install scaffolding that supports another site, either around or within the old one: a future city, a city in the air, a city of air, precisely because it wasn’t there all the time. The old site is left to fend for itself, while a new one is attached as a (literal) para-site. In the back of our minds is the dream of escaping from the site: the dream of the house that you can carry with you, like a turtle: the dream of the city you carry inside you, in your mind and through your bones." --Vito Acconci. Special fee $118.

ART STUDIO 389.020 TOPICS/ART AND SOCIAL ACTIVISM
Instructor: B. Irland F 9:00-12:50 + HRS ARR CA 1018

TW U HON 301.020. Throughout history artists have responded to the world around them with acts of conscience. Social injustice, human rights violations, environmental degradation and political power have inspired artists around the world to take action. They have used their camera lenses, paint brushes, welding torches, wood chisels and printing presses as extensions of a caring heart and concerned mind to explore the aesthetics of interconnectedness and social responsibility. In the spirit of Joseph Beuys’ concept of Social Sculpture, this class will investigate art and its relationship to the real world through sculpture, painting, performance, music, photography, printmaking. How can one person make a difference? How can we re-integrate art into the larger cultural dialogue and reach out from behind the isolation of the museum and gallery world? Join us as we create our own works and explore the history of art and social activism. Special fee $18.

ART STUDIO 389.036 TOPICS/THEORY AND PRACTICE
Instructor: M. McConnell MW 12:00-1:50 + HRS ARRANGED CA 1020

This course is designed to challenge each student to reflect on why he or she is studying art instead of something else; and an opportunity to fully articulate that reason without chaffing under the critique of academic authority or the accusation of nurturing implausible dreams. This will be done in a general climate of impassioned scrutiny that seeks to cast in high relief the intrinsic worth of even the most outrageous hope. As each aspiration draws near lucidity through concerted effort, the class will set about to plan strategies to fulfill every possibility, to profit from every talent and to achieve each and every goal.

There will be assigned readings to stimulate unguarded thinking and vigorous discussions. Without claim to unwarranted clairvoyance, certain tasks like portfolio presentation, graduate school application and K-12 teacher licensure are anticipated and no eventuality excluded. Guest lecturers and individual student appointments will be employed to their maximum to fully realize both the theory and practice of art. Special Fee $18.

ART STUDIO 429.047 TOPICS/INTERDISCIPLINARY (Montage, College, Assemblage)
Instructor: J. Neimanas MW 9:00-11:50 OFF CAMPUS

By using different materials, the 2-dimensional can become a 3-dimensional object or vise versa. Materials themselves can challenge and form new media. Bubble gum can be a drawing tool and hairs can make sculpture. Challenge materials and they will move with your imagination. “Originality! That’s what shocks. We are all more or less, without knowing it, creatures of habit who obstinately follow the same beaten path to which we are accustomed. Every new path alarms us, we shy at unknown precipices and refuse to go forward. We always want the same horizon before us; we laugh at, or are irritated by the things we don’t understand. That is why we are quite happy to accept originality when it is watered down but reject violently anything that upsets our preconceived ideas. As soon as someone with individuality appears on the scene, we become defiant and scared; we are like suspicious horses that rear at a fallen tree across the road because they can’t comprehend either the nature or the cause of this obstacle and don’t seek any further to explain it to themselves.” Emile Zola, 1867. Instructor: M. Tsiongas TR 12:30-3:15 ART 348

We’ll look at where it all started, Fluxus, the Situationists, Houdini, dada, and how performance art has changed as access to technology has changed. Some performance artists have gotten arrested, endured great suffering, created beautiful moments, challenged the notion of decency, manifested unforgettable images, and even changed the course of art funding history! Students will be encouraged to use a variety of high and low-tech media, analog and digital, video and sound, and the Internet to make work.
