Department of Music

BACHELOR OF MUSIC EDUCATION
INSTRUMENTAL TRACK 2003-2005

Adobe Acrobat
(in printable .pdf format)

Level 1 Licensure in Music, K-12, in New Mexico allows one to teach any music class at any level of instruction. Where two or more music educators are employed by a single school district, however, a division of responsibilities between instrumental music and vocal/general music commonly exists. The Department of Music, therefore, offers two planned programs in music education, an Instrumental Track and a Vocal Track.

The Bachelor of Music Education degree comprises either 135 or 136 hours depending on the concentration. All students must complete at least 40 semester hours of credit in courses numbered 300 or above.

You should apply for transfer to the College of Fine Arts when you have completed 26 credit hours in University College, with a 2.5 grade point average, including English 101 with a grade of C or better and 12 hours in Music including Applied Music 120.

Requirements for graduation are those stated in the UNM Catalog in effect when you transfer into the College of Fine Arts. You are responsible for your program of studies as stated in the Catalog, the Department Handbook, and the plan outlined in this document.

You must seek advisement from your Music Education advisor in the preparation of your program of studies. Approval of your program by your advisor is required each semester.

You are encouraged to enroll in Group Piano in order to develop those skills required to pass the piano proficiency examination. Credits obtained in Group Piano may be counted as electives.

  1. General Education Courses - 57 hours
  2. Music Courses - 40 hours
  3. Music Education Courses - 36/39 hours
  4. Concert Music - four semesters of Music 101 with grades of CR and Instrumental Lab - two semesters of Mus Ed 215 with grades of CR 0 hrs.
  5. Electives (for string concentrates only; may not include university skills courses and no more than 4 hours of nonprofessional physical education courses may be counted toward the degree.), 2 hrs.

TOTAL 135/136 hrs.

SENIOR RECITAL - The student must perform a joint or full senior recital in public. The recital must be previewed and approved by a faculty committee. The student must successfully complete at least one semester at level Ap Mus 319 in the major instrument.

PREPARATION FOR STUDENT TEACHING

Before music education majors student teach, they must apply for admission to a Teacher Education Program in the College of Education. (Please note that you are not applying for admission in the College of Education; you remain as a music education major in the College of Fine Arts.) The first step in this process is to take and pass the New Mexico Assessment of Teacher Basic Skills. This test is part of the Professional Skills Assessment and is required by the New Mexico Department of Education. Contact the College of Education Advisement Center in room 134 of Hokona-Zuni Hall (277-3190) for information (scheduling, test registration and fees, the location of the testing site, etc.) about the New Mexico Teacher Assessment Tests. We suggest that you initiate this process at least one year before the beginning of the semester that you plan to student teach. A delay in taking this test may delay your student teaching experience. Once you have passed this test, contact the College of Education Advisement Center. You will receive a packet of materials that explains how to initiate the screening process. When your College of Education packet is complete, (that includes a personal autobiography), you will be invited to appear for an interview with the Music Education Committee. Only after you have passed the screening interview can an official student teaching assignment be made. In addition, you must have completed all of the pre-requisite courses that are required before you student teach. This includes successful completion of the piano proficiency exam.

STUDENT TEACHING - Students must fulfill the following requirements and take the following courses before student teaching. Any exceptions must be approved by the Music Education Committee.

- Admittance to the College of Fine Arts
- A GPA in music courses of 2.50 and an overall GPA of 2.00.
- Pass the piano proficiency.
- Passing score on the New Mexico Assessment of Teacher Basic Skills and College of Education screening.
- Completion of the following courses: C&J 130 or 220, Psych 220, Music 150-150L, 152-152L, 250-250L, 252-252L, 453, 361, 362, 363, all Mus Ed 155 courses, Mus Ed 194, 315, 317 (if required), 346, 415, 441 (if required), 446, and 451.

After you have met all of the requirements described above, the Music Education faculty will give you a student teaching assignment. Before you student teach you must provide the College of Education Advisement Center with evidence of liability insurance. Insurance may be provided through membership in the National Education Association (NEA), American Federation of Teachers (AFT), or through a private insurance company. Information is available at the College of Education Advisement Center. You must also provide the College of Education Advisement Center with evidence of a completed and passed tuberculosis skin test or chest X-ray. Official results of the examination and its findings, completed within three months of the date of application to student teaching, must be filed with the College of Education Advisement Center.

LICENSURE

Once you have completed your student teaching and other degree requirements, contact the College of Education Advisement Center regarding your application for a teaching licensure for the state of New Mexico. As part of the licensure process, you must pass the New Mexico Assessment of Teacher Competency. See the College of Education Advisement Center regarding information about this exam.
