Music scholarships are based upon talent and need within the Department. Students wishing to be considered for scholarships must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and have made application to the university prior to audition. Scholarships are awarded for performance in the orchestra, band, and choirs and to talented pianists and guitarists. While first priority is given to students intending to major in music, talented non-majors are encouraged to audition.
For information on auditions contact the Department of Music Office, sbrake@unm.edu (505)277-8998, for information on woodwinds, brass and percussion or dcates@unm.edu (505)277-2126, for information about strings, voice, piano, guitar and harp auditions.
The Orchestra Awards are presented to outstanding performers who play violin, viola, violoncello, or contrabass. These awards are renewable for four years if the student continues to perform with the university orchestra. The awards are based on performing ability alone. Membership in the orchestra, and qualification for the awards, is by audition. For information contact the UNM Orchestra Director, Department of Music, Albuquerque, NM 87131-1411.
The University of New Mexico Bands offer awards in varying amounts to students for participating in the various bands. All students, regardless of academic major, are eligible for these awards. Membership in the bands and qualification for all the awards are by audition.
Band Grant Awards range in size from $400 to full in-state tuition and are renewable for four years. Students who receive the Band Grant Award must continue to play in the Spirit Marching Band during the fall semester and in one of the concert bands during the spring semester. The student is required to carry at least twelve credit hours and make satisfactory progress toward a degree.
Students who participate in the marching band also qualify to audition for the basketball pep band, "Soundpack." All members receive $150-$200 to play for the basketball home games. The actual amount of the award is based on the number of games for which the student performs.
(Administered by the Department of Music)
There are a few work positions available in the band, orchestra, and choral offices. The salaries vary according to experience and the job requirements. Most of these jobs require a music background as they involve music library, equipment and some secretarial responsibilities. The jobs provide excellent training for music and music education majors. Assignments are made by the directors of the ensemble involved.
These jobs are administered by the Student Financial Aid Office, Student Services Center, UNM, Albuquerque, NM 87131. Students are required to demonstrate financial eligibility and need. These jobs can be arranged to fit the students' class schedules and often gain career experience. Students may qualify to work from six to twenty hours per week. Salaries normally begin at $5.25 per hour and increase with experience. There are a limited number of jobs available in the Department of Music.
UNM offers a wide variety of scholarships designed to assist deserving students. Some scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need; others are intended to reward academic excellence; still others are to encourage members of educationally disadvantaged groups.
Obtain the financial aid application forms from your high school counselor. If unavailable, you may request these forms from the UNM Student Financial Aid Office. The applications are processed by College Scholarship Services and not UNM; you should, therefore, plan to mail the application no later than February 1. After these deadlines, you may still apply, but funds may be limited.
