How to Apply to FLL Graduate Programs

  1. Complete the online application at the Office of Admissions web site.

  2. Send the following directly to the Department of FLL:
    • letter of intent
      (reason for interest in field of study, background in field of study, research interests and goals)
    • Please visit the following link for tips on how to write a letter of intent.
    • writing sample
      (for example: a chapter of an Honors thesis or paper from a senior seminar between 8-15 pages. Applicants to French and German graduate programs please submit a writing sample in the target language; applicants for the French Ph.D submit a sample between 18-25 pages)
    • three letters of recommendation
      (from professors, instructors or academic advisers. At least two letters must be from people qualified to speak to academic aptitude, such as current or former professors. Please use the UNM recommendation form available on the OGS Website. Recommenders may write a longer narrative on separate letterhead. Emailed letters are not accepted.
    • copy of school transcripts

    • completed information sheet

Applications are reviewed by the Graduate Committee twice a year. For best consideration for assistantships and other department-awarded funding, applications should be submitted by February 1 for Fall admission, and October 1 for Spring admission.

Application received after these dates may be considered for assistantships and other department-awarded funding based on need and availability. The deadline for applications that do not request financial support is March 15 for Fall admission and October 15 for Spring admission.

Please note that all students are required to complete application procedures for both the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and UNM Admissions at one and the same time. The Department will only consider applications that have also been submitted to OGS/UNM Admissions as complete and bona fide. This includes payment of the required application fee.

Applications that remain incomplete by April 15 and November 15 will be disqualified from consideration for the Fall and Spring semesters respectively.
