The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in French.

Our undergraduate program emphasizes the development of students' language proficiency within a cultural and communicative context. The major and minor promote the understanding of the intellectual, literary and cultural heritages of the French speaking world through a broad range of courses in French and Francophone literature, culture and cinema. Drawing on critical and analytical tools from a variety of intellectual domains, and using an interdisciplinary and cultural studies approach, our upper division courses provide a comprehensive training in French and Francophone studies to prepare students for a variety of careers, including international jobs and graduate school.

Our program has much to offer students whose scholarly interests encompass European history and philosophy, cinema, international studies, and gender and postcolonial studies. Jointly led by students and faculty, organizations and events such as the French Club, French Conversation Hour, summer trips to France, film screenings, lectureships and field trips, as well as opportunities for study abroad, all enhance students' awareness of French and Francophone cultures. Undergraduates can also obtain a minor in French.
