1-3 Credit UNIV 101 Introduction to UNM and Higher Education Seminars
UNIV 101 CSS College Success Seminars introduce freshmen to UNM and Higher Education in an effort to accelerate successful transition into university life. Students work with a team of faculty mentors to explore a common topic/theme while refining discipline specific intellectual and practical competencies. UNIV 101 seminars aim to inspire freshmen to engage in high quality intellectual experiences, while exploring discipline specific opportunities and experience the excitement that comes from working to answer important real world questions.
Each UNIV 101 seminar has a topic/theme designed to bring together students with similar interests so that “like minded” groups of students can discover UNM as part of a collaborative learning community. The team includes: A scholar, an expert in the first year experience, and an undergraduate student/peer mentor-role model with computer, math and writing expertise. Teaching teams work closely with UNM academic departments and student services: Advising, Student Health, Tutoring.
UNIV 101 students are graded on the extent that they engage in guided learning activities. Assignments relate to the freshman experience in a research university, faculty research and scholarship at UNM. Students formulate personal learning questions, practice critical thinking and inquiry techniques, and then create a summary document: analyzing, synthesizing and applying their findings in a guided mini research project.
