Ignorance of the law is no excuse. And there is no reason to wait to find out how our legal society operates. These FLCs are great, not only for students interested in the practice of law, but for students who want to further understand the American legal system.

This FLC introduces students to the rich and vibrant experiences that have shaped the development of diverse Chicana and Chicano communities in the United States. The course illustrates how Mexican descent people and the communities they inhabit have experienced political intrusions and, at the same time, maintained rich and vibrant cultures in the U.S borderlands region and in U.S. society in general. Students, in the company of their FLC instructors, will visit cultural and historical sites of significance in the New Mexico region and understand how issues of race, class, gender and sexuality continue to influence dynamic Mexican American communities and cultures.

“WHEN in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People…” “We the People…” -- the ethos of our rule of law. We will examine aspects of our American legal system to gain understanding of its functions and methods -- that of lawyers, justices and judges, and the critical roles WE serve. We will study our nation’s charters through selected controversies in context – and work with developing knowledge on current dilemmas. How is our U.S. Constitution to be interpreted? How do We and lawyers employ the law to resolve private or public controversies? How does the law evolve and sustain American society?
In the seminar, we’ll employ readings, writings, argument and analysis, observation of court, presentations, discussion, and deliberation, woven together with skills and knowledge developing in English 102, toward an informed appreciation of our law and citizenship.
