Intimate Encounters with the Past

Intimate Encounters with the Past - FLC 611

This Community is Full

In this FLC, we study native civilizations and their colonization by Iberians. We write and perform scripts based on historical Spanish documents to understand how Europeans, Indigenous peoples, Africans, and their descendants experienced colonization. Assignments include reading and writing about primary and secondary sources in English and Spanish. We work in small groups to professionalize Spanish and develop key college skills: reading strategies, note-taking, writing, library research, and time-management. We explore careers in which Spanish and a knowledge of Latin America are an advantage. HIST 181 fulfills requirements in the Humanities core and History major. SPAN 301 fulfills requirements in Spanish, Latin American Studies, and Foreign Languages, and Literatures majors.

This course is recommended for Spanish majors.

Explorations in Education - FLC 624

Is learning real or meaningful for you? If not, why not? What makes for a great course? Is it the teacher or the student? This Seminar introduces you to a study of teaching and learning through three questions: 1) What conditions best support learning? 2) What qualities define good teaching? And 3) How can we use what we know about teaching and learning to improve your educational experiences at UNM? Assignments are used to raise questions and imagine possibilities. Only by appreciating the complexity of teaching and learning can we become better students and potentially, better teachers. Your writing for ENGL 101 will center on topics related to education, teaching, and learning.

Ceramic Seduction

Ceramic Seduction - FLC 633

“Introduction to Ceramics” is a “hands on” art studio experience that introduces you to the terms, concepts, historical and technical information that support creative development. You will discover the techniques of hand building and throwing basic clay bodies. Glaze, oxidation, reduction and atmospheric firing are taught. Readings and lectures are included and guest artists will speak. We will view images from UNM’s clay collections and from ArtStor. This studio experience is a creative incubator and a learning laboratory. It will promote a life-long enjoyment of ceramics and all its diverse reflections of human development and the aesthetic qualities clay possesses. Your own clay creations will reflect your first studio experience in the UNM College of Fine Arts.

NOTE: This FLC is restricted to Pre-Majors in the College of Fine Arts. Contact a Fine Arts advisor for permission to register.
