What are Engineering Freshman Courses?

These courses are designed to give incoming freshman students an overview of the Engineering and Computer Science degrees offered at UNM. Students will learn individual and team study skills required for success in an engineering or computer science degree.

Why should I register for an Engineering Freshman Course?

  • To get connected to other new freshman students planning to major in engineering or computer science.
  • To meet staff, faculty, and upper-class students in the School of Engineering
  • To gain a better understanding of the university learning environment
  • To obtain an overview of the engineering and computer science degrees offered at UNM.

Will I get academic credit for an Engineering Freshman Course?

Yes. Depending on the course you chose to enroll in, you will earn one or two academic credits.


How do I register for an Engineering Freshman Course?

During your summer orientation session, your engineering academic advisor will assist you in registering for these courses.

Who is required to enroll in an Engineering Freshman Course?

All students who gain direct admission into the School of Engineering Pre-Major status are required to enroll in one of the Engr-F 116 courses. Students are eligible to gain direct admission into the School of Engineering Pre-Major status if they meet the following criteria:

  • Math/Quantitative: ACT 25 or above, or SAT 580 or above
  • English/Verbal: ACT 19 or above, or SAT 470 or above
  • Reading: ACT 18 or above (SAT not applicable)
  • Science Reasoning: ACT 19 or above (SAT not applicable)

Can I enroll in an Engineering Freshman Course if I am not eligible to gain direct admission into the School of Engineering in Pre-Major status?

Yes! Any student interested in majoring in engineering or computer science may enroll
