What is a Freshman Interest Group (FIG)?

A Freshman Interest Group is a theme-based pair of classes designed to accelerate successful transition to university life. FIG students co-enroll in a "large" required - degree specific course and a "small"  (UNIV 101 Introduction to UNM and Higher Education) seminar. The larger (250 to 850 student) blocked course may be composed of both experienced upperclassmen and inexperienced freshmen. The block of courses is known as the Freshman Interest Group.

FIGS are restricted to freshmen.   The Freshman Interest Group theme brings together students of similar interests to engage in lively multidisciplinary discussions related to topics in the freshman interest group (FIG) theme.

Why should I enroll in a Freshman Interest Group?

Students work with a team of faculty mentors to explore a common topic/theme while refining discipline specific intellectual and practical skills.  The goal is to create a small learning community for freshmen enrolled in large required courses.  Students engage in use of cutting edge research technologies, UNM scholarship, discipline specific opportunities and the sense of excitement that comes from working to answer important real world questions.    UNIV 101 helps freshmen find their place for personal and professional excellence in the research university.

UNIV 101 Seminar teaching teams include: A scholar, an expert in the first year experience, and an undergraduate student/peer mentor-role model with computer, math and writing expertise.  Supplement instruction in the large blocked course is provided by the team. Teaching teams work closely with UNM academic departments and student services: Advising, Student Health, Tutoring.

What will I do in the FIG seminar?
