FLC-624 Explorations in Education

Fall 2013

CRNs: 25985 & 22073

(Freshmen register for their FLC classes at their Lobo Orientation or CEP Orientation session. You must register for all the classes in an FLC combination. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. FAC classes do not permit "wait lists" or "yellow cards" for enrollment in FAC classes that are filled to capacity.)

The two classes in this FLC are very highly coordinated.

All societies educate their young but they vary in how this is done. For most of us, this has meant going to school. But What did you learn as a result of going to school and what difference will it make to have a degree from UNM? What makes education worthwhile?

Is learning real or meaningful for you? If not, why not?  What makes for a great course?  Is it the teacher or the student? This Seminar introduces you to a study of teaching and learning through three questions: 1) What conditions best support learning? 2) What qualities define good teaching? And 3) How can we use what we know about teaching and learning to improve your educational experiences at UNM? Assignments are used to raise questions and imagine possibilities. Only by appreciating the complexity of teaching and learning can we become better students and potentially, better teachers. Your writing for ENGL 101 will center on topics related to education, teaching, and learning.
