Honors program FAQ
What
is the University Honors Program?
- An opportunity
for highly motivated students to study in a small, liberal arts environment
within the large research university. Honors seminars emphasize intensive
reading, accurate writing and attentive listening skills along with
spirited discussion in very small seminar classes.

Why
should I participate?
- Honors
students benefit from interaction with students and faculty from all
UNM colleges and schools.
- Honors
seminars will meet UNM general graduation requirements, elective credit
requirements and sometimes count towards major and minor requirements.
- An Honors
education acquaints students with opportunities in field courses,
study abroad programs, and information about major national and international
scholarships. Honors students are regularly accepted to prestigious
graduate and professional schools.
- Honors
seminars are limited to 15 - 18 students; they have a special grading
system, special library privileges, and no traditional examinations.
Do I
have to apply?
- Yes,
you need to complete the Honors Program application in addition to
the UNM application. This application is available on line at http://www.unm.edu/~honors.
Or you may phone the Honors Program Office at 505-277-4211. During
your LOBOrientation or CEP orientation session, you may sign up for
a freshman Honors class prior to submitting your application.
What
are the entrance requirements?
For
first semester freshmen, entrance requirements are:
- ACT
English score of 29 or higher; OR
- SAT
composite of 1250 or higher; OR
- High
school g.p.a. of 3.5 or higher; OR
- You
have completed English 101- Freshman English (for example, through
AP credit, CLEP credit, concurrent enrollment credit.)
For
transfer students, entrance requirements are:
- A college
g.p.a. of 3.2 or higher AND have completed English 101 or its equivalent.
Do I
have to start Honors in my first semester?
- No,
but we encourage you to do so anyway. Students who begin their Honors
course work in their first semester at UNM have proven to be more
successful and satisfied with their college education.
How
many classes will I take in Honors?
- Each
semester, you will probably take only one Honors class, for 3 credit
hours. The entire program requires a minimum of 21 credit hours for
graduation with Honors.
