What is a Freshman Interest Group?


25 Freshmen enroll in a weekly one-credit semimar organized around a theme. They also enroll in one or two additional classes together;they may or mey not be the only students in these classes.

Why should I join a Freshman Interest Group?

Join an FIG if:

  • You find a FIG theme that interests you or goes along with your possible major.
  • You want to make friends, build community, and be more engaged in your learning.
  • You want to learn more of the college success skills and attitudes that make effective students

How do I join a Freshman Interest Group?

Preview the themes and identify those you like. Your Academic Advisor will assist you in registering for a FIG during Orientation.

Will I get academic credit for the Freshman Interest Group?

Yes! All courses earn credit toward University Core Curriculum or Arts & Sciences Group requirement, or may serve as free electives. (Consult your Academic Advisor at Orientation for more details!)

Am I required to be in an FIG?

No. There are many academic choices for freshmen listed here. You should choose at least one of them.

How many courses will I take in the FIG?

You will take two courses in the FIG with a group of 25 freshmen. FIG classes are offered only in your first semester.
