What is a Living Learning Community?

An LLC is a community of 18 freshmen who share common academic interests, share a residence hall, participate in a weekly seminar, and also enroll in additional classes together.

What academic areas can I choose from?

In Fall 2006, University College is offering LLCs in conjunction with the College of Fine Arts, the School of Engineering, the School of Architecture & Planning, the Anderson Schools of Management, the Department of American Studies, the School of Medicine, the Colleges of Nursing and Pharmacy, and Department of Biology

Why should I join an LLC?

Join an LLC if:

  • You want to explore majors and minors in Fines Arts, Engineering, Architecture & Planning, Management, Language & Culture, Health Sciences Professions, International Studies, and Biology.
  • You plan to live on campus
  • You want to make friends who share your interests.
  • You want to learn more of the college success skills and attitudes that make successful students

Will I get academic credit for the LLC?

Yes! All courses either earn credit towards University Core Curriculum or Arts & Sciences Group requirements, or may serve as a free electives. (Consult your Academic Advisor at Orientation for more details!)

Who can join an LLC?

Any incoming freshman who has an interest in an LLC and is eligible for the courses that accompany the LLC.

The LLC dormitories fully accessible rooms.

Am I required to be in an LLC?

No. There are many academic choices for freshmen listed here. You should choose at least one of them.

How do I join an LLC?

  • Preview the eight LLC choices and identify the one you like.
  • Because we must coordinate your on-campus housing so you can live with your LLC group, you should apply for UNM Housing NOW at http://www.unm.edu/~reshalls/pr_application.shtml
  • IMPORTANT: you must be cleared with the LLC Director before you are officially admitted to an LLC, even though you should submit your housing application ASAP.
  • We can send you a request for information card, and later, the LLC program application

Where will LLC students live?

All LLC students will live in the Student Residence Center buildings 88A, 88B, 88C, except Biology and International Studies LLC; they will live in RVA. Each LLC apartment has six suites; RVA has four; two baths, a kitchen, and a common area. In the past residency in these halls has been limited to upperclassmen.

Are there any additional expenses to be in an LLC?

No. LLC students pay the same SRC and RVA and meal rates as other students in the SRC and RVA. There are no additional costs.

How many courses will I take in the LLC?

Each LLC is unique and required courses vary from 3-9 credit hours. All LLC students must enroll in their LLC seminar and blocked classes. All LLC freshmen must be enrolled as full-time students.
