Frequently Asked Questions


Q: Do I have to be admitted to UNM to participate in the Freshmen Summer Bridge Program?
A: Yes, you must be admitted for the subsequent fall semester.

Q: Who is eligible for the FSBP program?
A: Current funding provides for underrepresented ethnic minority students as defined by the National Science Foundation (Hispanic, African American, Native American/Native Alaskan, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders), will be given preference, however all applicants will be equally considered.

Q: Can I bring and keep a motorized vehicle (car, motorcycle, etc.) on campus?
A: No, however a bicycle or skateboard is permissible.

Q: Can I be checked-out on weekends or other times?
A: Check out is highly discouraged unless it is absolutely necessary, such as for family emergencies, medical appointments and the like. FSBP is a residential program.

Q: Do I have to participate in group activities on weekends?
A: Yes.

Q: If I miss a class, will I be able to make up missed work?
A: You will be enrolled in UNM classes during the program. These are college courses taught by college instructors, whose course syllabi are contracts between you and each instructor. Lateness, absences, homework and other course policies are in their professional judgment.

Q: Will I be required to attend all classes and afternoon sessions?
A: Yes.

Q: Will I need to register for LOBO orientation?
A: LOBO orientation is required by UNM of all incoming freshmen. You must submit your application for one of the orientation sessions. We will work with the Dean of Students office to get you moved into session #2 which FSBP is scheduled for.

Q: Will I be given a chance to register for the fall semester classes?
A: As a part of LOBO orientation you will meet with an academic advisor to design your program of studies and register for fall semester classes.

Q: Should I register for the College Enrichment Program (CEP)?
A: If you are required to do so by UNM, yes. However, we will collaborate with CEP to have your participation in FSBP fulfill their requirements.

Q: Should I bring my own sheets, pillowcase, blanket, etc.?
A: Yes
Q: If absolutely necessary, who can check me out?
A: Your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) in other words those that you will list on the "Permission to Check-Out" sheet.

Q: Will I be able to attend church services on Sundays?
A: Yes, there are churches on campus and within one block of the UNM campus.

Q: Will I be able to leave campus during my "free" time?
A: During your "free" time you are welcome to browse the campus. However, if you do go off campus you must remain within one block of the UNM main campus and be in the company of at least one other FSBP student or dormitory RA. You will also be required to check out and in of the dormitory.

Q: What kinds of scholarships would be available to me?
A: This depends on funding. For more information log on to http://soemep.unm.edu.

Q: Will I be able to do some shopping for essentials such as bath soap, shampoo, etc.?
A: You should bring a sufficient supply of these items with you. On campus there are convenience stores in the Student Union Building and Student Residence Center Commons. A Walgreen's store is located within a block of campus.

Q: Can I bring a small TV or refrigerator?
A: Small appliances (TV, refrigerator) and a computer may be kept in your dormitory room. It is important to remember that you will be sharing a room with another FSBP participant, and that the rooms are small. Wireless internet service is available throughout the campus including the dormitories.

Q: Will relatives and friends be able to visit me in the dormitory?
A: Parents or legal guardians are welcome to visit on occasion. Visits by other relatives are discouraged unless absolutely necessary. Personal and family friends will not be allowed.

Q: Who can attend the opening and closing banquets?
A: Each participating student is entitled to bring two guests which should be parents or legal guardians.

Q: Can I be dismissed from the program at any time?
A: As a student of the University of New Mexico you will be bound by the policies found in the Pathfinder (the UNM student handbook), and policies of the Engineering Student Services. Q: Will I earn college credit for the courses I will be enrolled in during the program?
A: Yes, and the grades you earn will affect your UNM grade point average.

Q: If I am dismissed from the FSBP for disciplinary reasons, how will this effect my status at UNM?
A: Your status for the subsequent fall semester will remain unchanged; however, you will be dropped from the summer courses you are enrolled in and a passing or failing grade will be assigned. You will also lose all benefits FSBP provides including but not limited to scholarships, LoboCash, etc.
