Studio  Problem # 1    Lie of the Land

If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.  If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat.  If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.                           Sun Zi, On War

This course involves the analysis of contemporary insurgency movements with a focus on inter-state cooperation to combat threats from non-state actors including political extremism, violence and terrorism.  In order to develop insight into insurgency movements and counterinsurgency operations, this class studio disaggregates the problem into specific issues.  These include: Drug trafficking; Weapons trafficking; Weapons of Mass Destruction; Strategies of Insurgency; Strategies of Counterinsurgency; International Security Organizations; and Ideology.

In order to familiarize ourselves with the political terrain, we consider a number of countries in detail.  Studio participants should consider the attached list of countries.  Participants should be prepared by the next in class session (February 15) to identify the capitals of each of these countries.
