English 221: Intro to Creative Writing
Agenda: February 12

• Sentence Workshop -- Third Example:  Small Group revision
• Read through the three new freewrites from Chapter Three.  Underline the phrase or sentence or image that is most compelling to you.  Freewrite for five minutes about why. 
• Group Discussion:  How is the freewriting going?
• Group Work:  (1) Identify as many of the methods of characterization below to the poem, "One Flesh" (2) Come up with a close reading question, for another group, about characterization.

  Direct Character Presentation

  • Image (or appearance)
  • Voice (or speech)
  • Action
  • Thought

  Indirect Character Presentation:

  • Telling (the interpretation of the author)

  Character Desire:  (what the character wants / the character's motivation / the character's yearning/ need / longing / hope )

  Character Contradiction:  Conflicting Desires:  long-term desires / short term desires.  Round characters are consistently inconsistent

  The Significant Decision:  Choices lead to Change

WRITE: A Reading Response, focusing on Character, on any of the following readings from Chapter 3.  The Inheritance of Tools; Interpreter of Maladies; I Knew a Woman; Stonecarver; To Aunt Rose; Life Cycle of a Common Man.  2-3 pages.  In your response, employ the critical vocabulary from the Chapter listed above.
