English 221: Intro to Creative Writing
Agenda: March 25, 2008
- In-class Writing: Choose one of the following prompts:
- Describe a person you love/admire/respect who is no longer in your life. Describe them physically. Describe their personality. What happened? (did they die? did they move away? was there some rift in the relationship?) When do you think of them? How does their loss affect your daily life? How does their influence affect your daily life?
- Write about a place you love as much as Galvin loves the meadow. Describe it in depth. Why does this place mean so much to you?
- What does solitude mean for you? How is solitude different, for you, from loneliness? Be specific (somehow).
- Swap Reading Responses. Read. Talk about your responses. Be prepared to share at least one insight into The Meadow from you partner that you gained from their response. As a pair, come up with a question to ask the class about craft or about any of the choices that Galvin made in writing this book. Speculate on the possible answers to your question.
For Next Time: 3/27
- RE-READ the poem "Often I am Permitted to Return to a Meadow"
- Come to class prepared to talk about what in the (*&^%(_?!!! this poem might mean and why it is at the front of this book
