GREEN MINUTES: February 16, 2004

Last week the Greens were mentioned three times in the Daily Lobo, woo hoo!

  • Abe Goodman, a Green who is running for Congress came to the meeting. He
is mainly trying to gain Green recognition in debates and free media
attention.  If you have any questions/concerns you would like Abe to address
    his phone number is: 286-5676.
  • Pre-Primary Convention for the Bernaillio County Green Party was yesterday
at the UNM School of Law.  Claire and Trey gave a presentation about our
group and all the great stuff we are doing around campus.
  • The rally for the removal of weapons research on campus will be Tuesday
April 13th, which is perfect because it aligns with the UNM Regents Meeting
in the SUB at 1pm. This is going to be a huge event and is going to take a
lot of organization and planning for it to be effective.  Tim Reynolds will
be asked to perform, and speakers are being contacted.  We need your help in
getting petitions signed (which Trey is in the process of making) these will
be given to the Board of Regents the day of the rally.  Petitions will be
    available soon.
  • For this month's outreach, homelessness/ hunger we will be volunteering
at Project Share (Yale Blvd.) Saturday, February 28th from 4-8pm.  So far we
have a group of 10, if you can come please make the effort  they are in need
    of our help!
  • We will be going on a hike this Sunday, we will meet in the office at 9am.
    Everyone is invited.
  • Edward would like to have one of us pose a question at a debate about the
War on Drugs in Lobo Room A at 7pm, March 4th.  If anyone is interested in
    doing this contact Edward: emikebll@aol.com
  • The three committees: Project Green Bus, Lobbying/Electoral, and Weapons
Research met to discuss their plans of action.
    • The Green Bus is focusing on getting the green so we can buy the diesel bus.
They are looking into businesses who would be willing  to sponsor a 5% day
      for the project.
    • The Electoral group is working on getting Instant Run-on Voting in New
Mexico. They will be researching other states where this state has been
past, and drafting up a proposal for the bill.
    • The Weapons Research group is going to sift thru the material that Trey and
Bob have gathered about weapons research on campus, and condense it into a
digestable booklet or flyer. They are also working on the petition.

GREEN HAPPENINGS:
What a productive week for the College Greens!

  • Trey and Jo attended the Regents meeting last week.  The Regents were very
receptive to their concerns about weapon research on campus, also the energy
audit. A veteran who spent time in the Middle East expressed his negative
feelings about weapon research on campus.
  • Trey and Jo also went to La Cueva High School on Thursday, Oct. 30th to
talk to Government classes about the Green Party.
  • This past week the Greens were metioned four times in The Daily Lobo, and
once in the Albuquerque Journal. Whoo hooo!!

    MINUTES:
  • The revised College Green Constitution will be posted online shortly.
Please take note of the Membership section.  The College Greens value active
membership, and would like all of the members to be involved to fullest of
    their ability.
  • Recruitment was also discussed at the past meeting.  We are looking for
new and innovative ideas for recruiting valued members.  Ideas included more
group activities (The Green Party, Party), hiking, more baking in the solar
oven etc.  If you have any ideas please e-mail Trey, or mention them at our
    next meeting.
  • The idea was brought up of eventually forming groups  to focus on more
specific projects within The Greens. This will be discussed further, when
the group size increases or need be.
  • Colin will propose a, "Plan of Action" for the UNM energy audit next week.
  • A account will be set up this week by Jo and Trey for the, "Clean Green
Machine." Our fundraising goal for this project is $2,000 by the end of this
semester.  This means that we need to start thinking of innovative
    fundraising ideas now!
  • Buy Nothing Day is the November 28th. Let Kyrsten or Jo know if you have
any suggestions and can help out with the project.
  • Bob said he would help us out in making bumper stickers that were specific
    to UNM College Greens.
  • The College Greens would like to be volunteering more for the community.
For each month we will narrow down our focuse to a specific cause.  For the
month of November it will be food, since this is a time that not a lot of
people volunteer in this area. Specific volunteering plans will be announced
next Sunday at our regular meeting.
  • Jason is currently in charge of looking into making The Greens T-shirt
    and/or Polo.
  • Ben and Trey are working together in the production of a Short Film to be
shown at the Southwest Film Center.  If you would like to join them, or have
any creative ideas let them know.
  • BRAINSTORMING will be the key to following through with our visions!!
