2004.12.02 Protest Voting Irregularities Friday Dec 3rd

I got a notice of a demonstration this Friday.  The rest of the information is as follows:

Join Friday Protest in ABQ on Voting Irregularities From the message boards on the Friends of MoveOn in NM blog:

This Friday, December 3rd, there will be a demonstration by an ad hoc group of concerned citizens who would like to call attention to the voting irregularities coming to light from various states across the nation.

The media is NOT reporting any of this, even though Jesse Jackson has had daily press conferences and the GAO has issued a full investigation of alleged suppression of voting within many counties in Ohio and Florida.

Please come with signs. Press releases and kits are going out Wednesday.

December 3rd from 4 PM to 6 PM in front of the Federal Court House at Lomas and 3rd.
**************
I got an email from a local Daily Kos member that explains the group that started this is comprised primarily of MoveOn and Verified Voting in NM folks. They're trying to get participation from the rest of the Albuquerque progressive community.

They believe the timing is right for this because the Green and Libertarian Party candidates just filed for a NM recount, as reported in a Washington Post article today.

2004.11.30 Giving Tree & Opportunities

Hey All!

It's time to get into the spirit....
The SUB and ASUNM Community Experience are teaming up again this year for our holiday giving tree!!!  On your own or with your student group, you can help foster children from all over New Mexico.  All you need to do is pick up an ornament off the tree in the SUB or at the SRC desk and it will give you information about presents you can get for a less fortunate child from New Mexico.  After
you have purchased the presents you can drop them off (unwrapped please) at the ASUNM  office or the SRC Desk. If you live in other parts of New Mexico and are going home for the holidays call Community Experience at 505-277-0106 or e-mail us at tce@unm.edu to see how you can help us distribute the gifts! Thank you for helping us bless kids throughout New Mexico during this holiday
season.

On another note, two great opportunities have opened up on the community experience committee for Projects Chairperson and Events Chairperson. The positions have opened up for the Spring semester, when we will be organizing for the Spring Storm - a one day community service event where hundreds of UNM students, staff and faculty volunteer for organizations all over the city.
Being on the committee is fun, rewarding, and is great experience. If you are interested in applying for a position, applications are in the ASUNM office (SUB plaza level, room 1016). For more information about the positions, email us! tce@unm.edu , or call 277-0106.

2004.11.25 Message from CodePink

Yesterday (2004.11.22) we put out an urgent call for aid to refugees from Fallujah, with an initial goal of raising $20,000. The response was amazing. From a $10 donation from a high school student to a $1,000 gift from a medical doctor, the compassion of the American people began to shine through the fog of war. In less than 24 hours, we surpassed our goal—and that’s just the online donations!

In addition, a humanitarian aid group donated 300 pounds of priority medical supplies, Cliff Bar is donating high-protein bars for the children, an Iraqi-American returning home offered to be our on-the-ground liaison and people are pledging to do holiday house parties to raise more funds.

When we contacted journalist Dahr Jamail to tell him to good news, he was elated. “Holy cow, $20,000 already? I'm catching my breath. This is so beautiful.” Dahr had just returned from a visit to the Red Crescent, who said they could only care for—at most—60,000 refugees. “This leaves at least 140,000 refugees, mostly women and children, with no support,”  said Dahr. “These supplies will be their lifeline.”

Also elated was Fernando Suarez del Solar, whose son Jesus was a Marine killed in Iraq. Fernando is joining us—along with other parents who lost children in Iraq and on 9/11—on a humanitarian aid delegation to the Iraqi/Jordanian border on December 27.

“I am so happy,”said a tearful Fernando. “Now we can finally help the Iraqi children! Let’s get bolder. Let’s raise $100,000 by the time our delegation leaves on December 27.”

So we now have a new challenge. $100,000 for the children of Fallujah. Let’s make it our collective holiday resolution.

If you haven’t already donated (or can donate more), please do so now. Donate securely online and challenge your friends, family and co-workers to meet or beat your donation. Visit: http://codepink.kintera.org/helpiraqis. Send checks made out to Help Iraqis/Global Exchange to 2017 Mission St. #303 San Francisco, CA 94110.

On Thanksgiving Day, while you are enjoying the warmth of your loved ones, make a joint family pledge. One family told us they are donating $365, one dollar for every day of 2005.

Pass this to your friends, relatives and coworkers.

Much love,
Andrea, Claire, Dana, Gael, Jodie, Medea, Tiffany

2004.11.23 Score one for the good guys: A Majoy Victory on Nuclear Weapons

Last week, Congress eliminated funding for two of the most provocative nuclear weapons programs and cut funding for two other nuclear-related initiatives. This is a major victory countering the Bush administration's dangerous nuclear weapons agenda and one for which we all can give thanks. And don't forget, you played a central role in our success.

In July, we asked you to tell your senators to eliminate funds for these programs, and thousands of you sent emails and faxes. Your actions mattered.

All funding was eliminated for both the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator, a dangerous--and scientifically questionable--program to design a new nuclear "bunker buster," and for research into other new types of nuclear weapons. In addition, funding was sharply cut for a new factory to make plutonium "pits," the core of nuclear weapons, and efforts to shorten the time required to prepare for a full-scale nuclear weapons test were pushed back.

These programs all threatened to undermine the United States' leadership role in nuclear nonproliferation. We cannot credibly ask other countries to restrain their nuclear weapons programs while we aggressively advance work on new weapons.

This campaign would not have succeeded without leadership from Representative David Hobson (R-OH), whose early cuts in the House set the tone for the eventual elimination of funding.

Thank you again for your support in helping us achieve this victory. We have sent a clear message to Congress and the administration that developing new nuclear weapons is not acceptable, and that the United States must lead by example to achieve true security.

Visit our website to find out more about the Union of Concerned Scientists' work on nuclear weapons.

2004.11.22 Protest the War in Iraq Every Friday with stopthewarmachine.org

We have established a permanent anti-war vigil at the UNM Bookstore Plaza. We plan to meet there on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. from now on to promote a permanent anti-war vigil presence in Albuquerque. We have also been retiring to the Winnings Cafe afterwards for a late breakfast/lunch....and to talk...  You are all invited to participate and it is ongoing. I have also been doing this on a daily basis for the past 60 days...I'm usually there between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and/or 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.....There have been complaints from several resident merchants because of the often continuous honking ( HONK FOR PEACE ). I've had many conciliatory chats with them and we intend to work things out with them concerning timing, hours and duration. If you'd like to rendezvous with me there on a particular day or hour, feel free to call or email me....SEE YOU ON THE STREET........Many thanks!.....Jess...332-0295....or.....ju

SOA Watch Update from the Gates of Fort Benning, Georgia! November 20, 2004, 3 pm

Dear Friends,

We write you from the SOA Watch Media Office overlooking the main gates of Fort Benning, Georgia where crowds of more than 10,000 people have gathered to CLOSE THE SOA once and for all! Fort Benning Road is packed with community activists, women religious, children, union organizers and people from across the Americas who have come to take a stand for justice.

We just heard moving speeches from Susan Sarandon and Sr. Helen Prejean, who called for the closure of the SOA/ WHINSEC. A statement recorded this year by US political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal was played as a colorful Puppetista pageant --featuring the 20-foot-tall World's Largest Puppet Head -- paraded the length of Fort Benning Road towards the main gate of the military base, home of the notorious School of Assassins.

This morning hundreds of SOA Watchers attended a Morning Plenary to discuss the upcoming events of the weekend and the spirit in which all of us are working together to close the SOA. This evening's events include workshops, film screenings, caucuses, and group discussions, all preparing
us for the procession this Sunday.

Spirits are high today as we ready ourselves for our gathering tomorrow. We have moved to inspirational music, listened to moving speeches, and reveled in the joyful spirit infusing the gathering. One person has been arrested for climbing over the barricades that have been erected to
prevent protesters from entering the area except for two entrances, which are being monitored by police.

Martin Sheen will be with us tomorrow and will walk with us in the solemn funeral procession that is the culmination of our gathering. Many in the gathering will negotiate a barbed-wire fence and enter the military base in an act of nonviolent civil disobedience, risking arrest and imprisonment. Since protests began over a decade ago, over 170 people have served sentences of up to 2 years in prison.

For up-to-date news on the gathering, please visit our homepage at www.soaw.org, or visit the Atlanta Independent Media Center at atlanta.indymedia.org.

Together we can CLOSE THE SOA!

2004.11.19 Protect American Workers AND Foreign Countries

Note: In addition to the points below--The hiring of increased numbers of high-tech and professional workers from foreign countries contributes to the brain drain from those countries, creating a disproportionate number of uneducated populace. Historically, resistance to foreign and corporate domination begins with the educated; subtracting these people decreases this potential. With less high tech workers, the economy of those countries becomes increasingly based on less income generating industries such as agriculture, mining, factories. The reduced numbers of available teachers reduces the educational level and therefore economic potential of the entire country.

Guest workers are not allowed to vote in the United States of America and their compliance to increasingly repressive legislation is higher than a typical citizen since their entire existence in this country is based on their compliance. These people also tend to avoid political action, since such action can result in their being deported. The importation of these workers reduces the non-militaristic/non-weapons development positions available to citizens.

Dear Working Families e-Activist,

Right now, Congress is giving last-minute consideration to legislation that would increase the number of high-tech and professional foreign guest workers who can work in the United States even though U.S. workers in the occupations most affected already suffer high unemployment rates. The proposal would be included in the Omnibus Spending bill for FY05.

The legislation is part of an agenda by the Bush administration and congressional allies to enable businesses to hire foreign workers they can pay less than U.S. workers under the H-1b visa program. Please click this link to take urgent action now:
http://www.unionvoice.org/ct/n1zA1w91ZuSv/protectjobs

The proposal Congress is debating now would allow foreign graduates with advanced degrees from American colleges or universities--more access to professional and technical jobs here. While giving companies a supply of lower wage workers, the
measure also would worsen today's job crisis for professional and technical workers whose unemployment rates are already at record levels. Please act now:
http://www.unionvoice.org/ct/n1zA1w91ZuSv/protectjobs

The legislation also would accelerate job exports by giving H-1b visa holders the training and skills they need to take their jobs overseas.

America needs economic strategies to create jobs--not proposals that allow employers to exploit H-1b visa holders and pay them less than their U.S. counterparts. Please click the following link to urge your members of Congress to oppose any legislative effort to increase the number of H-1b visas.

2004.11.18 Date Change for Hanging with the Greens

Due to venue's being booked, we have changed the Hanging with the Greens event from Dec 3 to Dec 10. The Calendar page and the homepage reflect this change.

2004.11.17 Common Cause

Dear UNM,

I'm writing to inform you that we are working with Members of Congress and other organizations to put together a special report to the nation on December 7, 2004.  We want to make sure the public has as much information as possible about the problems that occurred on Election Day, as witnessed first hand by groups with on-the-ground field operations.

By now, some of you may know that there has been a request for a recount of all votes cast in the presidential race in Ohio.  Common Cause and several other organizations are supporting that request.  It is not our expectation that a recount will change the outcome of the election, nor is that outcome the intent of this effort.  However, we believe that it is imperative in a democracy that every citizen's vote is counted.

While we are pushing to make sure that all votes are counted in Ohio we need you to help us out in a number of ways:

First, we need to make sure that any recount process in Ohio is totally free of the taint of partisanship.  Partisan supervision of elections has undermined voter confidence in our electoral process.  Therefore we are calling on Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell, who led President Bush's re-election efforts in Ohio, and whose partisanship in this election drew comparisons to Katherine Harris in Florida, to remove himself from the recount process.  We are asking you to join us in signing our nationwide petition requesting that Secretary of State Blackwell remove himself from any and all recount-related procedures.  We must ensure any recount is pure and not left open to accusations of partisanship, which tainted the process in Florida in 2000:

www.commoncause.org/DemandPureOhioRecount

So please sign our petition and forward it to everyone you know so that we can help erase any doubt about the integrity of the vote recount process in Ohio.

Second, if you live in Ohio and if you have not done so already, please be sure to fill out our voter experience form .  Help us collect information on whether you faced problems while voting - such as long lines or trouble with provisional or absentee ballots - or if you had difficulties with your registration process or using voting equipment, such as optical scanners or punch cards.  Please also use this form to let us know if you witnessed or experienced problems with challengers at polling stations or any other voter suppression efforts in Ohio.

We are pleased to inform you that Common Cause Ohio  already organized two public hearings in Columbus on Saturday, November 13, and on Monday, November 15.   Citizens testified under oath about their personal voting experiences.  Many of those who testified spoke of standing in long lines, receiving misinformation, or using faulty voting machines.  The hearings also revealed problems we've heard less about, such as cars being towed while the owners were voting.

Even if you do not live in Ohio, you can help our efforts by submitting your own voting experience story, and more importantly, forwarding this e-mail to anyone you know in Ohio.  Ask them to fill it out and tell us about their voting experience.

Voters throughout the country need to know that we have made every effort to count all their votes, and it all starts in Ohio.  A purely non-partisan Ohio recount of all votes cast, and an examination of all voting procedures used there will allow the nation to produce a full and detailed accounting of the election in that state, and will lead the way for much needed reform.  That is why we want you to join us in demanding a non-partisan recount free of all partisan shenanigans, and also help us gather information on voting experiences from voters in Ohio.  We need to take these steps to restore people's trust in our democratic process.

Lastly, in addition to your activism, we would appreciate your support and contributions for our work to protect the integrity of our elections.  We are doing everything we can to remove doubts about the integrity of our electoral process, and we need you to stay with us now.

Thank you again for all you do for Common Cause.

Sincerely,

Chellie Pingree
President & CEO, Common Cause

2004.11.16 Petition

Please forward this to contacts far and wide...and as fast as possible! A true show of will by the people is needed. Please help promote this effort. We got thousands to sign the recount petition in Ohio, this petition is just as important.

Please help us petition the nomination of Alberto Gonzales for U.S. Attorney General.
He will most likely be confirmed, but let's give him a harder time than our "representatives" will!

2004.11.16 Green Blitz

Here's what we're asking you to do:

Between Wednesday and Friday, write a letter to the editor, a guest op-ed column, an article, or an essay about the Ohio recount.  Send it to your local daily newspaper, weekly community periodical, or monthly magazine.  See below for suggested 'talking points' about the Ohio recount, a sample letter, and advice about writing.

Post your letter, column, etc. on e-mail discussion lists for other Greens to read.
Notify the Media Committee mclarty@greens.org if your submission gets published, so we can circulate and archive it.

Please join the Green Blitz, and help the Green Party, either through your creativity or your

Valle Vidal

The Valle Vidal "New Mexico's Yellowstone" is slated for Destruction. The White House Task Force on Energy Project Streamlining, at the request of Texas energy giant El Paso Corporation1 is aggressively pressuring the U.S. Forest Service to allow coalbed methane drilling in the Valle Vidal for only eleven hours of natural gas.2

And if that's not bad enough, they expect us to sacrifice the wildlands of the Valle Vidal, most likely to El Paso Corporation. This same company is responsible for operation of the gas pipeline in Carlsbad that exploded in 2000, killing twelve people. This is the same company implicated in California's 2001 energy crisis for overcharging its citizens $1.5 BILLION.3 The bottom line: El Paso needs the gas in the Valle Vidal to bail itself out of the corporate debt.

New Mexico can't afford to lose the Valle Vidal's natural wonders-once drilled, its lands are lost to us forever. New Mexicans can't afford to pay for El Paso Corporation's debts to California. The federal government has already handed the oil and gas industry millions and millions of acres of public land in New Mexico for oil and gas drilling. We cannot and will not destroy one of New Mexico's natural wonders for 11 hours of gas.

The Valle Vidal. It's New Mexico's Natural Wonder.not Texas Corporate Welfare!

Don't stand by while big corporations destroy New Mexico's natural wonders.

Write and call your representative TODAY and let them know that the Valle Vidal matters to you!

2004.11.14 Urgent action. Sign the petition

Please join UFW Co-founder Dolores Huerta; tell Sorrento Lactalis--maker of Precious and Sorrento brand cheese--to take a stand against sexual discrimination.

Dolores has spent her life fighting for farm worker and women's rights. She is asking that we take a stand to help the dairy workers at Threemile Canyon Farms. These workers have been struggling to get a contract for the last 20 months.

Sorrento Lactalis, maker of Precious and Sorrento brand cheeses, currently receives milk produced by Threemile Canyon Farmsand refuses to use it's influence to help resolve this dispute despite requests from Threemile Canyon Farms customers such as
Safeway.

Please make a difference for these workers. Sign the on-line petition calling on Sorrento to use its influence to resolve this situation. Go to:

2004.11.11 Heritage Forests Campaign

Hello!

My name is Erika Hartwig and I am working with Heritage Forests Campaign in an outreach effort to college campuses nationwide to get the word out about the Roadless Area Conservation Rule and the Bush administration’s plans to repeal it, putting millions of acres of pristine national forests at risk to development.

Here are 3 quick facts about the Roadless Rule:

1.      It was enacted by Clinton in 2001 to protect almost 60 million acres of wilderness from road building, logging, mining, and other development.

2.      Despite outcry from literally millions of citizens, the Bush administration repealed the Roadless Rule as a federal law.

3.      The comment period - a designated allotment of time in which citizens can submit official comments to the Forest Service about the Roadless Rule – ends November 15, 2004, making these last few days crucial to saving our forests.

We are sending a letter (see below) to Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth to express our opposition to the decision to repeal the Roadless Rule.  Before we send the letter, we are asking student groups like yours to sign on to give the student population a voice on this important issue.  If you would like your group to sign on, please reply to me ASAP with your name, the full name of your organization, and your school.  Your group will then be added to the growing list of student orgs that have already signed on.  Please feel free to forward this email to anyone you know in a student organization, on your campus or elsewhere – and it doesn’t have to be an environmental organization! Also, if you want more information on the Roadless Rule, visit www.ourforests.org.

Thanks very much for your time.  The more we speak out on behalf of our nation’s wilderness, the better chance it has for the future!

Sincerely,

Erika Hartwig

 Dear Chief Bosworth:

Please accept this letter as an official public comment for the roadless area management state petition proposal [Docket Number: 04-16191].

We, the undersigned student groups from college campuses across the country, strongly oppose the Forest Service’s proposal to repeal the Roadless Area Conservation Rule as issued on January 12, 2001.

The Roadless Rule is a balanced policy that was enacted to protect 58.5 million acres of our national forests from most logging and road-building.   The rule was crafted following years of scientific study, 600 public hearings and a record number of public comments.  Prior to the current comment period, the Forest Service received more than 2.5 million comments on the Roadless Rule—95% of which call for the strongest protection possible for roadless areas.

As students, we are concerned about the protection of our national forests.   Our national forests must be protected now and in the future because of the important role they play in providing fish and wildlife habitat, clean drinking water for millions of Americans and endless recreational opportunities.  Our national forests also serve as an essential educational resource to teach students about biodiversity conservation and sustainable public lands management.

The Roadless Rule is a vital tool for protecting our national forests from harmful and costly road-building and commercial logging.  Please protect our last wild forests by upholding the Roadless Area Conservation Rule as originally issued.  We have a responsibility to protect these special places as an enduring legacy for our generation and future generations to come.

 Sincerely,

Erika Hartwig

2004.11.10 FDA Appointments

President Bush has announced his intention to appoint Dr. W. David

Hager to head up the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee. This committee has not met for more than two years, during which time its charter lapsed. As a result, the Bush Administration is tasked with filling all eleven positions with new members. This position does not require congressional approval. The FDA's Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee makes crucial decisions on matters relating to drugs used in the practice of obstetrics, gynecology and related specialties, including hormone therapy, contraception, treatment for infertility, and medical alternatives to surgical procedures for sterilization and pregnancy termination.

Dr. Hager is the author of "As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women Then and Now." The book blends biblical accounts of Christ healing women with case studies from Hager's practice. His views of health care are far outside the mainstream for reproductive technology and modern gynecological practice. Dr. Hager is a practicing OB/GYN who describes himself as "pro-life" and refuses to prescribe contraceptives to unmarried women.

In the book Dr. Hager wrote with his wife, entitled "Stress and the Woman's Body," he suggests that women who suffer from
premenstrual syndrome should seek help from reading the bible and praying. As an editor and contributing author of "The Reproduction Revolution: A Christian Appraisal of Sexuality Reproductive Technologies and the Family," Dr. Hager appears to have endorsed the medically inaccurate assertion that the common birth control pill is an abortifacient (causes abortion). We are concerned that Dr.Hager's strong religious beliefs may color his assessment of technologies that are necessary to protect women's lives or to preserve and promote women's health. Dr. Hager's track record of using religious beliefs to guide his medical decision-making makes him a dangerous and inappropriate  candidate to serve as chair of this committee. Critical drug public policy and research must not be held hostage by anti-abortion politics.

Members of this important panel should be appointed on the basis of science and medicine, rather than politics and religion.
American women deserve no less. There is something you can do. Below is a letter to be sent to the White House, opposing the placement of Hager. Please copy all the text of this message and paste it into a fresh email; then sign your name below

Send a signed copy of the e-mail below to president@whitehouse.gov

Dear President Bush:

I oppose the appointment of Dr. W. David Hager to the FDA Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee. Mixing religion and medicine is unacceptable in a policy-making position. Using the FDA to promote a political agenda is inappropriate and seriously threatens women's health.  Members of this important panel should be appointed on the basis of science and medicine, rather than politics and religion. American women deserve no less.

2004.11.09 from Justica-listserv

At a meeting tonight mon. 11/8/04 in Albuquerque a number of suggestions were made on how to deal with the situation of an apparent second straight stolen election. Among the many suggestions, one very easy and non time consuming action that people can take is to demand a formal investigation of how the election was conducted in New Mexico. This pressure can be brought to bear by getting many, many people to write a simple, short letter to the Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil Giron asking for this investigation. Please take the time to write this letter and/or to forward on to as many people as you can in your e-mail address book. The e-mail address for the Secretary of State is secstate@state.nm.us
I have written my letter below not as an attempt to get John Kerry elected but with the intention to insist that the principles of democracy and the will of the voter be respected.

----------
Subject: Request for formal investigation of 2004 New Mexico election

Dear Ms. Vigil-Giron:

As a resident of New Mexico and a registered voter who voted in this
election, I respectfully request that the Office of the Secretary of State
initiate a thorough investigation of voting irregularities that have
occurred during this election in New Mexico. Without this investigation, we,
the people of this state, will be left with a situation in which a lack of
confidence in a legitimate outcome will linger for many years.

Sincerely,

[Your Name/Address Here]

2004.11.08 Reform

From Trey:
So I think it is pretty obvious we need electoral reform in this country. Starting at the top, nation-wide, won't work. We need to work locally.

Since amendment three passed, it's time to start meeting with our city councilors. We now have the possibility of making Instant Runoff Voting a possibility in Albuquerque.

I believe this issue is important enough to have its own nonpartisan group form around it.  But before additional groups are started and we spread our resources too thin, I think it would be good to see what Common Cause is working on and see how we can supplement their efforts.

Let me know if you have any ideas. What you think we should be working on. If you know anyone else who would be interested in these issues.

We can't lose our energy. From the anti-war movement to the anti-Bush
movement to what? Contact: trey3@unm.edu
