With a focus on campus sources and activities (both UNM and CNM), cover the events, personalities, groups, trends and issues related to electoral campaigns—fundraising, speeches, debates, advertising, registration, etc. -- the elections in November and its aftermath, and the process and meaning of democratic participation. 

 

2) MULTICULTURAL AFFAIRS

WOMEN and MINORITY AFFAIRS -- Women's Center, women studies, NOW chapter, UMAS, MEChA, Affirmative Action Office as it relates to women, life of women students, employment trends, salaries, promotions, Chicano Center, Black Student Union, Native American Center, etc., with their various programs, controversies, projects, events, recruiting, budget problems, Affirmative Action Office, employment trends, salaries, promotions.

 

3) EDUCATION

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION and CONTINUING EDUCATION -- Administrative affairs, deans' offices, department heads in the College of Education, student affairs, programs, employment potential, trends, changing requirements, graduate programs, enrollment trends, graduate recruitment and job placement.  Cover issues related to K-12 programs and public education in general.

 

4) INTERNATIONAL

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS and the LATIN AMERICAN & IBERIAN INSTITUTE --  International student organizations and  their activities and projects; campus trends and comparisons in regard to international student recruitment; the Latin American and Iberian Institute has researchers and programs in several countries and an active agenda of speakers on campus.

 

5) CRIME AND SAFETY ON CAMPUS

CRIME AND POLICE -- How does the crime rate on the UNM campus compare to the crime rate on other campuses in this region? Are the types of crimes similar or different?  What concerns, initiatives and trends are observed in campus safety for students, staff and faculty?  This reporter must check the campus police blotter regularly to produce briefs, news, and features on relevant topics.

 

6) HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE and STUDENT HEALTH CENTER -- University of New Mexico Hospital, Board of Trustees, Cancer Research Center, subsidiary programs, dean's office, student affairs, programs, medical research, medical costs, budget, and Student Health Center. The student health center is a gold mine of stories; work it well and you will be rewarded.

 

SCHOOL OF NURSING, COLLEGE OF PHARMACY, MALSA -- Offices of the deans, projects, programs, student activities, new faculty, enrollment trends, budget problems.

 

7) UNM GOVERNMENT

CENTRAL ADMINISTRATION -- President's office, university secretary, regents, comptroller and university's financial operations. (Regents meet the first Tuesday of each month.) The reporter must make it a practice to become familiar with and to the denizens of Scholes Hall.

LIVE-IN STUDENT BODY and GREEKS --  Cover life in the dorms, Greek‑letter organizations, student-family housing, chartered student organizations, New Mexico Union, New Mexico Union board meetings. This is a feature-oriented beat with lots of story possibilities such as a restaurant review on the dining hall, crime in the dorms, lifestyle features.

 

YOUTH CULTURE – Cover events, issues, personalities and trends of interest to young people—including politics, entertainment and social issues.

 

9) ENVIRONMENT

Cover UNM programs and departments, experts on this issue, student organizations and any campus initiative or event involving environmental concerns.

 

10) WORKPLACE AND LABOR RELATIONS

This beat covers campus operations but also planning for the future at UNM: parking, planning, maintenance, workplace safety, UNM architect's office, physical plant offices, etc.   Also covers relations between university administration and staff, faculty, and student employees; employee programs, problems and opportunities; staff labor unions; state and federal labor law; human resources issues; hiring, firings, and promotions at UNM, etc.
