The UHP warmly welcomes Dr. Charles Price as the Distinguished Garrey Carruthers Chair for the 2011-2012 school year. Dr. Charles Price, professor emeritus at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, received his B.A. with honors, M.A., and Ph.D. from Stanford University. He was awarded three National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships and a French Government Fellowship in musicology. His publications include topics in Baroque music (Handel, Corelli) and rock music (The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix). His articles have appeared in American Music, Early Music, Journal of American Culture, as well as book essay collections. He has presented papers at national meetings of the American Musicological Society, the American Handel Society, the American Culture Association, and the Society for Eighteenth- Century Music, and at international conferences in the United Kingdom, Finland, Germany, Ireland, and Canada.
Garrey Carruthers Chair in Honors
The University Honors Program received a $1 million gift from the Burlington Resources Foundation. The purpose of the gift was to establish a Garrey Carruthers Chair in Honors. Over the years, the UHP has attracted many distinguished scholars who have resided in the Honors Program either for one semester or for an academic year. The intent of the Chair was to bring outstanding scholars to the University of New Mexico to benefit the Honors Program, as well as the entire campus.
The Honors Program has made a conscientious effort to bring to campus persons from various disciplines. We look for scholars who have "proven" themselves through activities and accomplishments in their respective fields; bring some degree of honor and visibility to UNM and the UHP; and who can serve as liaisons between the Honors Program and other departments and colleges on campus. These scholars are expected to teach in Honors but may also teach a course in a department that fits with their field. They are also expected to give a public lecture and be generally available to students and faculty. We see these scholars as a means of bringing new, different, innovative, and exciting ideas to campus.
