Honors Curriculum
Rather than merely duplicate other courses offered by other UNM departments, UHP seminars are interdisciplinary. Here, students will find a rare environment where they can study anything from nanotechnology to Harry Potter! Lectures take a backseat in the Honors Program, which means that every course requires extensive student participation and preparation.
The Honors Program serves as a focused enrichment to the major course of study students pursue while attending UNM. Students graduate with a degree from one of UNM's degree-granting colleges or schools, but rather than major or minor in University Honors, students who complete the Program receive a prestigious designation (summa, magna or cum laude) from University Honors on their diploma and official transcripts.
UHP students must take a minimum of 24 credit hours in Honors seminars to complete the Program. All UHP students must participate in a cross-cultural or multicultural experience in order to be considered for graduation with a University Honors Program designation. These courses or experiences need not be taken in Honors, but must be clearly specified and described in the Senior Exit Packet prior to graduation. Students may fulfill this requirement by majoring or minoring in a foreign language, participating in Conexiones or other foreign exchange study programs, or completing a course that explores other world views and traditions, such as the Far or Middle East, Africa, Latin America, etc.
UHP seminars may be used to fulfill group requirements, electives, or graduation requirements in the various colleges. The College of Arts and Sciences will accept Honors seminars in fulfillment of the 96-credit graduation requirements and as group requirement credits. Some colleges require that a student file a petition for permission to count seminars toward credits for graduation. Petition forms, available in the UHP office, are taken to the academic advisors of the various colleges for approval and filing. Students are advised to keep a photocopy of each petition.
