Senior Disciplinary Honors Thesis

Many departments require that seniors complete a thesis, but some departments may offer other options, such as an extensive design project. Seniors who have been admitted to a departmental honors program, usually beginning their junior year, may use six credit hours of this thesis/project to fulfill the Senior Option required to graduate from the UHP. The form and length of individual papers or projects will vary depending on the requirements of the department. Psychology theses, for example, consist of 40-60 pages.

Making It Count

In order for a disciplinary (departmental) thesis to be considered for UHP credit, the student must turn in the following items:

  • a Disciplinary Thesis/Project Form (also in pdf)
    • This must be signed by the Thesis Advisor and Dr. Otero, the Honors Director
  • an Abstract or Thesis Proposal or Prospectus describing the research project

Both items are due by the first day of class in the semester they begin their research; although students are encouraged to turn them in earlier. Students who miss this deadline will have to select a different senior option in order to complete the Honors Program.

Presenting Research

As with the Interdisciplinary Honors Program Thesis, departmental thesis candidates are required to present their research in a public forum, either at a conference, the Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium, a departmental research presentation day, or at the UHP Senior Thesis Presentation Day.  Save the handbill or flyer from the presentation event as it must accompany the final draft of the thesis when submitted to the Honors Director.

What to Turn In

When the thesis is completed students submit a bound copy of the thesis/project two weeks before graduation to the Honors Director for permanent inclusion in the Honors Library.

The final manuscript must include all appropriate signatures from the department which indicate its approval by the department. Additionally, a finalized Thesis Abstract, and a copy of the Disciplinary Thesis/Project Form, along with the handbill from the public presentation must be bound in the final manuscript or product.

For examples of past theses accepted for Honors credit, please see the Thesis section of the Honors Library (in Room 25, also known as the computer pod).
