    Department Description
Dept 1815-1 comprises the operations team of The Ceramic Materials Department (1815). 1815 develops new ceramic materials, characterizes and improves the processing methods for fabricating ceramics, and evaluates the physical, optical, and electronic properties and reliability of ceramic and glass materials and components.  The main technology thrusts are powder processing methods, electronic and optical materials development and integration, failure analysis and testing, rapid component prototyping, reactive composite processing, ceramic joining, glass technology support, and ceramic packaging. A new focus is development of bio-nanocomposite materials for applications in biosensors, cancer research and drug delivery.

An underlying theme of our work is the quest for understanding the physical phenomena responsible for an observed effect.  We pursue partnerships with other Sandia organizations, universities, and industry to leverage our research investments, establish collaborations with other experts in these fields and serve as Sandia's "gateway" for these technologies.  Our work supports DOE Defense Programs, other DOE offices, other federal agencies, and industry.
    Job Description
Dept 1815/1815-1 has an opening for a postdoctoral fellow to conduct fundamental research and development of large area of optical coatings and characterizations.  Specifically, research areas include optical modeling and design for optimized optical performance (e.g., antireflection); fabrication of nanomaterial coatings guided by modeling and design; optical characterizations including anti-reflectivity, non-linear optical properties, and light harvesting; electrical characterizations on charge transport behavior; and collective properties within nanomaterials coatings. The successful candidate must have the ability to apply fundamental research results to ongoing optical and electrical applications of the nanomaterial coatings under development.
    Required / Desired Criteria
    * Recent PhD in Chemical Engineering or Electrical Engineering with directly related experience in materials science.
* Ability to work in a team environment and a strong desire to ensure success of the team.
* Strong publication record demonstrated by papers in prestigious peer-reviewed journals
* Creativity demonstrated by inventor/co-inventor status on patents or patent applications
* Experience and capability in T&F Cal and related software, Z-scan optical characterizations, I/V measurements, surface plasmon polariton excitation, and solar cells.
* Experience with CMOS fabrication for charge storage and transport studies.
* General training in areas including clean room operations, patterning, and semiconductor processing of advanced materials
* Excellent communication skills - both oral and written
