About Us

About Us:

Goals

  • Engage faculty, students, researchers, teachers, and administrators in discourse and development of professional knowledge in the field of Indian education through round table discussions, special forums, and invited speaker presentations.
  • Provide symposia that targets Native language speakers and teachers of Indian languages and address specialized areas of preparation such as: language teaching, curriculum development, language planning and development of tribal certification processes for language instructors.
  • Provide a series of summer programs that bring together tribal members who serve as professional leaders, and educational administrators for culturally focused leadership development.
  • Design and develop special field research projects and collaborating initiatives that enhance and improve local educational programs, schools, and agencies serving Indian students.
  • Provide opportunities for graduate level COE students in research, while also engaging college faculty more fully in discourse and collaboration with field practitioners, researchers and Native faculty.
  • Establish outreach work with local Indian tribes, state and other agencies to determine critical needs in research and training not currently addressed through existing education programs, curricula or pedagogical practices in schools.
  • The Institute for American Indian Education was created in response to New Mexico’s overwhelming need to improve American Indian student retention and achievement in schools.
