News from the past:

  • IAIE will be sponsoring a free one-day Tribal Language Program Planning workshop for Native Language Teachers, Tribal Language Program Directors and members of Tribal Language Communities on Saturday, March 01, 2008. The workshop will be held from 9 AM – 3 PM on the UNM Main Campus’ Student Union Building, Second Floor Acoma B room. For more information, download the flyer here.
  • IAIE will be hosting another FREE Teacher Test Taking Workshop for New Mexico Native American teachers on March 01, 2008 to prepare for the New Mexico Teacher Assessment. The workshop will take place from 9 AM to 4 PM on the 2nd floor of the SUB in Acoma A on the UNM main campus. For more information call 505-277-7781 or email ptate@unm.edu.   • One of our IAIE scholars, Michael Ann Carroll-Brown will be one of the notable speakers during Commencement and the COE Convocation on December 14 and 15, 2007. She was recommended by both the Elementary Education Department faculty and Bilingual/TESOL faculty and then was selected by the UNM president and the Dean of the College of Education to speak. Michael Carroll-Brown will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and an emphasis in Teaching English to Second Language Learners. She earned university honors Cum Laude and national honors Pi Lambda Theta.
  • IAIE will once again provide a FREE workshop opportunity to prepare for the New Mexico Teacher Assessments (NMTA) on January 12, 2008 from 9 AM to 4 PM on the UNM (Main) Campus Student Union Building (SUB) 2nd Floor in the Isleta Room.   • The IAIE/Kiva Club Silent Art Auction for teaching scholarships is Thursday and Friday December 6th and 7th. A radio PSA is attached. Please send it to your community media and post it on websites. If you are interested in donating to this event, please stop by the IAIE offices in Hokona Hall in Rooms 250 or 281. Summer Opportunity for High School Students:

  • For anyone working with high school students, the Native American Journalism Association is looking for Native youth writers and photographers. The application is available at www.naja.com. It is due May 1, 2007.  This summer institute is an intensive weeklong journalism camp to introduce journalism to high school students. Selected students will learn basic journalism skills and work with media professionals in producing a newspaper called, Rising Voices.  For more information call 605-677-5282.

  • The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (IPCC) will be opening their “Native Words, Native Warriors” exhibit today, March 01, 2007. The opening ceremony with a reception will begin at 5:30 PM at the IPCC. This exhibit was made possible through the Smithsonian National Museum of American Indian (NMAI) and the Smithsonian institute. The exhibit will travel to other museums throughout the country. The exhibit will be on display through May 11, 2007. Click on “What’s New?” on the top of this webpage http://indianpueblo.org after it completes its introduction page.

·       Course Description:  This course will examine the characteristics and stages of development associated with American Indian language learners and the implications for teaching tribal heritage languages. The course will explore current issues in language instruction at the elementary and secondary level including, but not limited to:  teaching strategies and approaches for developing communicative competence: language lesson planning and curriculum development; language assessment issues; and other language related matters pertaining to language instruction and Native language programs. This course is designed for Native speakers of American Indian languages, with special emphasis on New Mexico tribal languages.   Students will be working in their native languages and will be expected to complete a number of language related projects that address language instruction in their respective communities and schools.  The course will meet in full day sessions over the course of several Saturdays during the semester.  Visits with “veteran” Native language immersion teachers and programs will be arranged during the course and will be a requirement of all students.  The objectives of this course are to:

·       Understand the instructional needs of language learners and the implications for developing appropriate strategies that will meet their language development needs.

·       Utilize information about best practices in language instruction and informed knowledge about language learning processes for planning appropriate programs of language instruction.

·       Understand the relationship between native language teaching practices and tribal goals for maintaining tribal languages.

·       NOTE:  For Non-degree students (students without a previously earned baccalaureate degree) who wish to take this course should first apply and complete a non-degree admission application before registering for this class.  You may obtain further information about this and obtain an application from the UNM Admissions Office by calling 277-2447 or toll free at 1-800-225-5866.   Applications may also be downloaded from the UNM website at:  http://apply.unm.edu

·       This course will provide a broad overview of issues in education and language for Native American tribes of the southwest and will explore the relationship between language, culture, and education in the life of these communities. Some of the key areas this course will examine include: 1) the implications of language shift and language loss, an increasingly common phenomenon occurring in many Native language communities; 2) contemporary issues and tribal community perspectives regarding the maintenance and revitalization of Native tribal languages; and 3) the impact of contemporary educational policies and teacher certification issues upon Native language initiatives in schools.
