Welcome!

Thank you for your interest in the UNM Educational Diagnostician Preparation (EDP) prorgram. We provide advanced training in educational assessment and diagnosis for those who are interesting in pursuing licensure as an Educational Diagnostician. Courses and activities in our program are designed to prepare students for careers as Educational Diagnosticians who will work primarily in educational settings, and our program is designed to focus on the role of educational assessment in the identification, classification, and supports of students with exceptionalities from preschool through high school. This program emphasizes cultural and linguistic diversity, instruction in using a variety of assessment methods, and the conection between assessment and instructional programming.

This program is open to students who wish to pursue  licensure as an Educational Diagnostician in conjunction with other graduate work they are completing at UNM. This coursework meets the New Mexico Public Education Department's (NM PED) coursework requirements for licensure in the state of New Mexico as an Educational Diagnostician. The complete licensure requirements can be found on the NM PED website or by clicking
here.

This program is open to students from across New Mexico. Expansion of this program is made possible, in part, by support from the Dr. Jane Blumenfeld Endowment for Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in Special Education Assessment and Diagnosis.

Vision Statement

The vision of the UNM EDP program is adopted from the vision statement published by the New Mexico Technical Evaluation and Assessment Manual (2007, pg. 2):

Educational assessment is a process designed to fairly and systematically explore, document, and communicate the unique learning and functionoing of a student. In New Mexico, cultural and linguistic diversity are foundational considerations and must be considered in planning and implementing all other aspects of educational assessment. The functions of assessment are diagnosis (determining eligibility), classification (grouping by selected characteristics), and planning supports (assuring services and monitoring response to instruction and intervention). Educational assessment is integrally related to student learning and teaching, and is a necessary component of the continuous feedback loop necessary to assure that students with disabilities have access to the general curriculum, appropriate supports for educational success, and maximum participation in school life.
