ASSIGNMENT 3

A) Here is the Robinson projection of the world is shown. The parameters are as follow:

World_Robinson

Projection: Robinson

False_Easting: 0.000000

False_Northing: 0.000000

Central_Meridian: 0.000000

GCS_WGS_1984

This projection is classified as a pseudo-cylindrical projection by reason of its straight parallels, along each of which the meridians are spaced evenly. The central meridian is also a straight line; other meridians are curved. The meridians curve gently, avoiding extremes, but thereby stretch the poles into long lines instead of leaving them as points. Hence distortion close to the poles is severe but quickly declines to moderate levels moving away from them. The straight parallels imply severe angular distortion at the high latitudes toward the outer edges of the map, a fault inherent in any pseudocylindrical projection.

B) Here are the approximate latitude and longitude of three cities.

Santa Fe, NM = -105.924112; 35.719158

Phoenix, AZ = -111.970366; 33.72307

Austin, TX = -97.882007; 30.318620

The distance between Augusta and Olympia if the view is not projected is 2531.54 Miles = 4073.25 Km.

The distance between Augusta and Olympia if the view is projected into Albers Equal Area is 2548.54 Miles = 4100.6 Km.

According to the 1990 census, Phoenix (AZ) is the most populous capital with a population of 983403 people.

According to the same census, Montpelier (Vermont) is the least populated capital with a population of 8247 people.

Santa Fe (NM) is the highest capital with an elevation of 6989 feet (2231 meters).

C) Map of New Mexico with the Albers with a -106 central meridian.
