Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) code 3.0

Background

Derived from the MISC, the MITI is a one-pass behavioral coding system designed to measure treatment fidelity for motivational interviewing.  It can be used for clinician training or as a quality check in clinical trials.  The MITI is substantially shorter than the MISC and uses only one pass for a 20-minute segment of a therapy session.  The brevity of this system necessarily excludes measurement of important process variables, such as client change talk, captured in the MISC and the SCOPE.  The MITI 3.0 coding manual can be downloaded here.  The MITI 2.0 is available in French, Dutch, and Swedish versions.

Training materials

Two sessions from the Motivational Interviewing Professional Training Videotape Series (1998) have been coded using the MITI 3.0.  Video ordering information and download links for the coded and uncoded transcripts are given below.

Because examples of low-quality MI are not widely available, we have created sessions using role-plays with simulated patients for training purposes.  Download links for the audio files and MITI-coded and uncoded transcripts are given below. To download the audio files, right-click with your mouse and select "Save target as" or "Save link as".
