All officers were present. Guests present were Larry Pleau, Dennis's father, and Sally Jacobs and Arnold Gallagher who are looking for a Corvair convertible and are interested in becoming members. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. Mark Domzalski announced that he and the CORSA board appreciated the Secretary's comments on the Board in the last Newsletter. Treasurer Wendell Walker reported that as of the 4th CNM had $477.23 in cash and checking accounts, $363.41 in the savings account and $6,166.74 in the investment account for a total worth of $7,007.38. He also noted that the investment account was up slightly since the last report. There was no membership report, since Sylvan Zuercher was packing for Palm Springs. Mark reported that Bob Slusher had resigned as a Western regional director. The board appointed Kent Sullivan to fill the remainder of Bob's term until May. Virtual Vairs had problems with their mail server and ended up off line for a time. Virtual Vairs was very difficult to police as a chapter but is a great recruiting tool for CORSA. It was decided to turn Virtual Vairs into a committee of CORSA with Kent Sullivan, past President of V.V. as the chairman. Dennis Pleau will be the upcoming Chairman. Allen Eggleston volunteered to be the new Membership Chair for CORSA and after talking with the board, he was appointed. The board still does not have a concours chair, but have sent out a Concours Committee job description to several possible prospects and are waiting for a reply. CAR COUNCIL Bill Reider reported on the last Car Council meeting. The New Mexico "Z" club is folding. They just sponsored a National Convention here in Albuquerque and had a lot of problems. Also the Foresmans are moving to Washington State, and they were pretty much the driving forces in the "Z" club. As mentioned last month, on Saturday November 21st there will be a Festival of the Cranes Tour sponsored by the Old Car Club of Albuquerque. All are welcome. Meet at the Pit parking lot to leave at 10:00 AM. Lunch is planned for the Owl Cafe in San Antonio. A new Buick club will be starting up shortly in Albuquerque. If you know anyone who might be interested, contact Bill. On November 22nd, the Maloof garages on Edith will be open for a tour. He has three or four large buildings filled with mostly Cadillacs. The garages are north on Edith from Osuna about 3/4ths of a mile and on the west side of the road. OLD BUSINESS A sign-up sheet was sent around for the next "Route 66" cleanup. It will be on November 14th. Meet at 9:00 AM at the usual place on old highway 66. NEW BUSINESS: Paul Campbell has two tech talks lined up for the new year. Bill Nelson will give a presentation on the latest in oils and lubrication in January, and in February we will have a presentation on painting. Ilva Walker sent her thanks to Jim Pittman for the layout of her article in the last newsletter on the fall tour. Jon Anderson also gave an oral report on the tour to Embudo Station. The weather was great and all who were able to go had a good time. Paul Campbell had some work done at Alignment Pro's by Dave. He was satisfied with their work and Dave gives a 10% discount on Corvairs. Steve Gongora got a call from a Jeff Page who lives near Moriarty and has two Corvairs for sale. Jeff's phone is 384-5320. The next board meeting will be Wednesday November 18th. The meeting was adjourned, and was followed by a presentation on rebuilding Corvair flywheels by Bill Reider. ===== FOR SALE, TRADE OR WANTED FOR SALE: Ammco Brake Lathe with attachment to cut truck drums and rotors as well as motorcycle drums and rotors and a flywheel resurfacer.Grinder to smooth hot spots. December 1991 Volume 17 Number 12 Our cover featured a multitude of Christmas trees and at least one toy Corvair gift. Two new members this month were Kevin Olley and Bob Beasley. Our Christmas dinner plans were discussed and we reviewed plans for our Tri-State Meet next May. Milton Sanchez announced that Ken Johns had taken over Ed Black's and renamed it Casa Chevrolet. Ken Johns was willing to continue to sponsor Corvairs of New Mexico and has expressed interest in continuing the "All Chevy Show." We discussed the need to raise our dues to cover expenses and voted to raise dues to $15.00 a year effective 1/1/92. President Steve Gongora praised Ed Black for sponsoring our Club for so many years. We had a comprehensive financial report from treasurer Wendell Walker. Tech tips told us how to get into a locked trunk without damage, how to change those thermostats and how to keep your rear end (i.e., transmission and differential housings) clean and new-looking. And finally we had a comjprehensive 1991 Index. FOURTEEN YEARS AGO The 1984 cover was a do-it-yourself puzzle, somewhat like a stained-glass window. President Boydston ran our meeting and we had a tentative list of activities for the coming year. Jerry Goffe showed slides from his recent trip to the U.K. LeRoy Rogers reported on our flea market activity which raised some $75 for the Club. LeRoy also told us that our next meeting would include a video, "The Methodical Man," about a person deciding to buy a new Corvair. Jim Pittman provided an article purporting to tell exactly how to write an article for the Newsletter. Bill Reider's column was about ignition systems, how they work and how to keep them in tip-top shape. Finally, the issue wrapped up with our 1984 newsletter index. TWENTY-ONE YEARS AGO: In December 1977 we had no newsletter. ============================================================================ C O R V A I R S o f N E W M E X I C O C O M I N G E V E N T S ============================================================================ | | | | | D e c e m b e r | J a n u a r y | F e b r u a r y | | | | | | : : 1 2 3 4 5 | : : : : : 1 2 | : 1 2 3 4 5 6 | | 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 | 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 | 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 | | 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 | 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 | 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 | | 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 | 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 | 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 | | 27 28 29 30 31 : : | 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 | 28 : : : : : : | | : : : : : 1998 | 31 : : : : 1999 | : : : : : : : | ============================================================================ Wed 2nd Dec 7:30 PM Regular Meeting - CASA CHEVROLET 7201 Lomas NE Sun 6th Dec 12:00 Noon Christmas Dinner - Kirtland AFB Wed 16th Dec 5:00 PM Board of Directors Meeting - House of Covers Fri 18th Dec 9:00 PM Newsletter Deadline - Jim Pittman - EARLY! Its almost time for the annual CNM Christmas dinner, um I mean brunch. Come and see what Rita has planned for us this year, I'm sure it'll be great. See the details in other parts of the news letter. The Pleau family along with the Pattens, Dave, Kim and Dell, Sylvan, Mark Domzalski, Steve Gongora, Tarmo Sutt, Belinda (the Swedish exchange student staying with the Sutts), Jerry Goffe, and Clayborne Souza all made it to the Great Western Fan Belt Toss and Swap Meet in Palm Springs, California. It was great to see Clayborne again. All seems to be well with him. Karen and the kids are moving out to California to be with him in December. As usual the swap meet was great. Almost any Corvair part you could imagine was for sale. Larry's Corvair Parts and Wall's Corvair Underground had large quantities of new parts, and Southwest Corvair Salvage and a whole bunch of other people had vast quantities of used parts. If you couldn't find what you were looking for, you weren't looking hard enough. I met Richard Finch of the "How To Keep Your Corvair Alive" book fame who was there in his Ultravan and camped on the field. He asked about Jim Pittman and mentioned the Jim Pittman Corvair engine story is still in the latest edition of his book. Again we were unprepared for the snow in Flagstaff on the way home after leaving the warmth of the Southern California desert. I haven't done any Corvair work this month. I did buy some parts so the Greenbrier is a little closer to running than it was a month ago. I would like to publicly thank Mark for appointing me to the post of chairman of the Virtual Vair committee of CORSA. The VV's are still having a few problems with the switch of our mail hosting sites but we are slowly working through them. Keep driving those Vairs, - Dennis ===== MAKING PROGRESS ON GETTING TURBO TO IDLE (VV) Larry Forman (vairlovr @ unlimited.net) To: virtualvairs @ corvair.hostway.com BUT, I want to add a tip that I had heard about and it worked really well -- I was having some trouble making SURE that I was at #1 compression TDC. The suggestion I heard about was to use a balloon connected into the #1 spark plug hole and wait for it to pump up at the compression stroke. I used the hose from my compression gauge and just let all the air out of the balloon. The baloon was attached to the now open end with rubber bands. Made finding the compression stroke simple! Try it if you are not sure which stroke you are on. Let the air out of the balloon and moved it to #2 while rotating the engine CCW and sure enough, worked like a champ again. I'll add this to my tech tip page soon. Larry Forman-- '65 Turbo Corsa Vert. INTRODUCTION & MORE Brossard, James J (73613.2466 @ CompuServe.COM) To: Corvair Net (corvair @ shadow.mitre.org) Hi Corvair Fans, I'm new to the Corvair e-mail network. My name is Jim Brossard and have been a CORSA member from day one. I am also a founding member of CORSA Northwest and belong to Rocky Mountain CORSA and Central Valley Corvairs. I consider myself an active club member and strong supporter of CORSA. I have been to all but four national conventions and attend many mini conventions across the country. What kind of Corvairs do I have? I have three: a '61 Monza coupe which I got new and now has just under 300,000 miles, a '64 Monza coupe with about 17,000 miles and is just like new, and a '68 Monza coupe with about 20,000 miles and is very, very nice. The last two spend most of their time under cover in the garage. They do come out for mall shows and Corvair mini and national conventions if the streets have been washed and swept. The '61 has a special place in my heart as it was my "go to work car" for 31 years (I retired in '92 after 37 years with Boeing). During the last ten years or so, there weren't many Corvairs entering the Boeing Space Center and I'm sure the guards waved me in without seeing may Boeing badge. They just knew my car. I've kept the car looking stock but mechanically I've updated and improved it in many areas. Too many to totally list here but a couple of the major ones I'll mention. The engine is a '65 with a modified turbo and extensively modified turbo heads; ie, the combustion chambers now have a "quench" chamber and the spark plugs have been changed to the smaller 10mm size and relocated so they are over the exhaust valves. These modifications seem to work as it has a low end punch it never had before. I've also added a camber compensater. Over the years, it has been repainted several times because it has had to spend all of its time in the "great outdoors". Recently I installed a complete "Clark's" interior - everything from the headliner to the floor mats. I like cars, especially Corvairs!! I suspect, from reading through the Corvair e-mail in my in basket this week, that most of the members of this network are a lot younger than I am since most of the questions being asked are the same as were asked 20 years or so ago. I'm very glad to see young people getting interested in the Corvair. I've been concerned for some time about the lack of young people coming into our Corvair clubs. If any of you don't belong to CORSA as well as a local club, you're missing out in a lot of fun and a great source of Corvair parts and repair help. Know for my "two bits" worth regarding queries on the Corvair net. To: Bob Crumpley TOWING YOUR CORVAIR I'd suggest you "flat tow" it. To do this, you'll have to have two "mirror image" brackets and an A-frame hitch fabricated by a welding shop. This will probably cost less than renting a tow dolly or trailer. Some clubs even have these for their members use. The two brackets fit between the bumper and the body or in place of the bumper if you don't want to make them a permanent installation. I have several friends who tow their Corvairs behind their motorhomes this way. One in particular has towed his '66 4-speed Corsa convertible 10s of 1000s of miles behind his motorhome this way without ANY problems. To: Mike ALUMINUM OIL PANS I agree with Kent Sullivan's comments. An aluminum pan will not SIGNIFICANTLY lower oil temperature and, if it's the kind that increases oil volume, it'll hit every speed bump you encounter. I had one like that - no more! If you're running hot, the first thing I'd do is check the oil cooler to see that it isn't blocked by any debris (its cover is right under the alternator). Next, especially if you don't know the car's history, I'd remove the top shroud and is see that it doesn't have any cooling passages blocked by debris. You'd be surprised how fast that fan can make a shop rag disappear if you aren't careful. I am assuming that your engine is in GOOD tune and are using plugs with the correct reach. If any threads are exposed, either plug or head, you have the perfect "glow plug". Also, if any of the plug threads are exposed, they will collect carbon and probably destroy the threads in the head after several removals. Most Corvair vendors can supply you with correct plugs for your Vair. Also, if you have access to an exhaust gas analyzer, use it to ensure your engine isn't running too lean. Next, I'd remove the lower shrouds if you live where it really gets hot. If you overhaul your carbs, I'd install #53 jets. My '68 140 has '66 carbs with #53 jets and a '66 distributor and no smog pump and passes our smog tests with lots of margin. ALLISON ELECTRONIC IGNITION I agree with Eleen Kamas' comments. I don't have one on any of my Corvairs but have, over the years, run across many who have and swear by them. As for conversions using Chrysler inners, I've heard about them but don't have any first hand knowledge. If anyone knows specifics about these conversions, it would be David Langsather of Dale Manufacturing. The address is on the back of the CORSA Communique every other month. OIL FILTERS I haven't had any problems getting Fram PH4s for my Corvairs at my local auto parts store; however, for my "every day" '61, I use Fram PH8s with a modified 90 degree adaptor because they are always on sale around here for under $2. ADJUSTING VALVES I've always adjusted valves hot and running. I have "1/3" valve covers and they sure beat getting yourself and the floor covered with hot oil. Don't forget to let the lifters fully expand when you're adjusting valves. Back off the rocker nut until the valve clatters and then wait a minute or two. If the valve stops clattering, back off the nut some more. After it keeps clattering, tighten the nut until the clattering just stops. Do this to all six valves. Then tighten them all SLOWLY an additional 1/4 turn. Yes, only a 1/4 turn. Do this a side at a time. It minimizes the amount of oil you have to clean up. VAPOR-INJECTORS I don't know any one who currently has one of these on their car. They use to be all the rage 15-20 years ago but have disappeared from the scene. I think they helped a little but not enough to warrant the bother. I believe it's the water exploding into steam that cleans up the combustion chamber. I suggest you get rid of the carbon by taking a little trip in your Corvair after you get it back on the road. To: Matt Mashyna TIRE SIZES In general, I agree with Don Bowen's comments; however, I'm quite sure that originally 60-66 cars came with 6.50x13 tires, and 66-69 cars with 7.00x13 tires. The nearest available equivalent tires are 175/80-13 and 185/80-13, respectively. However, if you're not concoursing your car in a stock class, I'd suggest you put on at least 185/70-13s. Better yet, would be 195/70-13s and they won't give you any interference problems. 205/60-13s are too wide for Corvair rims. Best, would be to search the wrecking yards for early '70s GM Rally Wheels (these have the correct bolt pattern and offset) and use 195/70-14s. My son has these on his '66 Corsa convert. They look great without the "beauty rings" when nicely two-toned and pin stripped. It's interesting to note that his speedo is "right on" with this wheel/tire combination and my '68's speedo with 185/70-13s is "fast." My guess is the "designers" planed for this combination but the "bean counters" must have prevailed with the cheaper 13 inchers. BRAKES It's real frustrating if your Corvair doesn't GO, but it is right down disastrous if your Vair doesn't STOP! If there is any question about your car's brakes, get them overhauled! It has been my experience that it is cost and time effective to do the job right the first time. For 30 year old brake systems, that means rebuilding/replacing wheel and master cylinders plus new hoses. Also, thoroughly inspect the steel lines, especially, if your car has been in the "salt belt". After doing all this, it would be good to switch to silicone brake fluid. Enough! Happy Corvairing! I recently went out to New York state for my Spring Break. Well, since I'm from Iowa and don't get out that way much(ever) and the map only made it look like it was an hour away, I drug my fiance to Shelbourne Falls, MA to see Clark's Corvair Parts. Well, turns out it was about 2-1/2 hours THROUGH the mountains. Okay maybe they weren't really MOUNTAINS to some of you but I'm from Central Iowa where a large dirt clod looks like a mountain. Here's what we got for our 5 hour trip: We got to see the offices, where they have a lot of the used parts they recently acquired from California, where they print everything, where they make their upholstery and where they have more used parts and cars and the Corsa they use to test turbos and carbs they rebuild. Unfortunately, they did not let us see the shop where they do all the work. That really disappointed me, but I think he might have shown me if I would have pushed. It kind of fried him when I said we were from Iowa. It's a long ways from there, you know. Anyway the moral of this story is don't drive a long way to go on the tour, but if you live real close, it is kind of neat. One thing I have to say on their behalf is that they did not seem too upset that we were over an hour late, but our map did not indicate the mountain range we had to go through. Well, I've had my Spyder in storage all winter and I can't wait until this lousy Iowa (but better than the Northeast) weather gets nice for more than two days at a stretch. Isn't it great to be a part of Corvairs of New Mexico? Isn't it great to be part of a team of both local and out of state people who work together, play together and enjoy such neat little cars? I just love it when we are driving around and someone does a double take, makes the pointing gesture and displays the questioning look. You all know what I mean. I think it's terrific! I especially enjoy seeing and reading the end result of our Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter each month. I know first hand how much time, energy and dedication it takes to make it the best newsletter! (Oops, is my partiality showing?) There are so many of you who contribute on a regular basis; I won't attempt to name everyone. But just as an example, there are people like Ilva Walker. Jim asked her at the last minute to write an article and she instantly responded, "Sure, I can do that! How long do you want it and when do you need it?" Oh, that her enthusiasm and willingness were contagious! I know what many of you are thinking about now... "But I'm not a writer! I don't want to make a fool of myself and maybe construct something awkward, or worse, incorrect! Golly, what I have to say won't interest anyone so why bother?" We've all said that, right? It is true that all of us are not writers, including me. But, just remember that's where our editor comes in. He has been in this business for a long time and he is able and willing to help you edit anything you will give him. Just give it a try, folks. People like Mark Morgan (whom I've never met) also amaze me. He keeps our editor supplied with those clever Billiken cartoons. He doesn't even live locally, but still supports the Club. It takes all of us. We are all part of a team, working, playing and enjoying the luxury (?) of owning, restoring and driving our Corvairs. We are all a part of the Newsletter team as well. Each time you contribute something you show your support. Thanks to all of you who help make it THE BEST. Feliz Navidad y Prospero Ano Nuevo 1999! (one more time!)! -- Heula Pittman ==end==
