Doug is a Lifeguard flight paramedic with University Hospital and has a 1961 Loadside. It was previously converted to automatic and Doug is about to convert it back to a four-speed, as well as install a 110-HP engine. A big CNM welcome to Kathy and Doug! ===== NOVEMBER MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees President Hurley Wilvert called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM. All officers were present except for Vice-President Bob Gold. New member Alicia Romero and her mother Monica were present. Doug Gadomski was introduced as a possible new member. Doug is a Lifeguard paramedic and has a 1961 Loadside. Previously he had a 1963 Greenbrier which had 400,000 miles on it when he sold it. Doug showed us a drive train cradle he had just welded up. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. There was no CORSA report since Mark Domzalski was at the "Fan Belt Toss" along with several other CNM members. Treasurer Wendell Walker reported that CNM has $198.92 in the checking account and $5,915.36 in the Money Market account for a total of $6,114.28. CAR COUNCIL REPORT: Bill Reider reported that the Car Council made over $2,600.00 at the swap meet. They will send half of that amount to the clubs that participated. The members of CNM who helped were Wendell Walker, David Huntoon, Dennis Pleau and Bill Reider. Paul McLaughlin will receive 25% of the $1,300.00 since he did most of the work in putting the swap meet together. The balance will then be split among the people who helped. It was decided that since some of the clubs only have one person to help, it would be more equitable if they gave it to the people who did help, and they could do whatever they wanted with it. The Super Internationals (Muscle & Rod Group) will have a show on February 4th through the 6th. The Car Council will have a table and will be looking for some help. CNM should get some membership information together so that we might attract some new members. There will be space for us on the table if we have the material. The MVD got a new computer, and when they went to enter the Horseless Carriage plate information, it disappeared into cyberspace. They seem to not know how to transfer information from one computer to another. If you have a Horseless Carriage plate, you will have to keep track of your renewal date yourself and send in your renewal at the end of your five years. Mike Gonzales will be running the Museum Car Show next spring. The Car Council is going to pay him to do it, since nobody else wanted to do it. Bill talked to him about having three classes for the Corvairs, and that should not be a problem. The only thing we have to do is give him one of our T-shirts and a dash plaque. Bill said that we would probably have about forty cars at the show, and Mike was thrilled. Mike asked what kind of display we would have, and if it would be as good as the Packard club had? OLD BUSINESS The November 13th Wheels Museum diner dance was discussed. There will be an 18-piece orchestra and costumes. CNM has two tables reserved. The railroad has struck again, and the person who was supposed to make the decision as to who gets the property, seems to be ducking calls. The word is that the Dallas bidder on the property is a friend of his? (By the time you read this it will be partially obsolete, CV). The committee for the Wheels Museum says that there will be a museum even if the railroad does not sell us the property. The Tri-State in conjunction with the Museum show is coming along. Debbie Pleau has arranged the hotel and the dinner, which will be catered by The Cooperage at the hotel. The rally is being planned, as much as can be done before spring. The logo is still not ready, although there were more promises. NEW BUSINESS There were six Corvairs at the K-9 Country Club show on the Saturday before the November meeting. There were contests for dress alike, bark alike as well as many other contests which I did not get in my minutes. I have been told that the whole thing was a howling success. Hurley Wilvert was in Phoenix recently and spent some time with the president of the Cactus Corvair Club. He wants to try and come to the Tri-State/Albuquerque Museum show. The Cactus Corvair Club is also sponsoring "Corvairs Across Arizona" on the weekend of May 5th and 6th, 2000. This will run from Douglas, Arizona to Laughlin, Nevada. There was information passed around at the meeting, and it sounds very interesting. Maybe we could discuss it further and put together a group to go. A vote of thanks was given to Dennis Pleau for his work with Virtual Vairs. Jim Pittman suggested that members could write biographies similar to the one Hurley wrote for the newsletter. (I really didn't know much about Hurley until I read his biography. I found it very interesting. CV). The next board meeting will be on November 17th at House of Covers. Note that all members are welcome at the board meetings. The meeting was adjourned at 8:08 PM. ===== NOVEMBER BOARD MEETING ? ===== SEVEN YEARS AGO IN C.N.M. December 1992 Volume 18 Number 12 The cover was Christmas trees. President Del ran the meeting. We had $1086 in the bank. Walter and Dave Huntune from Chicago were guests. Is it possible we mis-spelled their names? Paul Coffman was a new member; he lived in Ohio. We were preparing for our Christmas dinner and talked about getting Club T-shirts and jackets. Michael Pleau attended, but he may not remember. Del mentioned he was working on getting a Greenbrier back on the road. A blurb from the Sierra Club listed hidden costs to owning an automobile. Mark Martinek reported on the tour to Truth or Consequences: three Corvairs and an RV. LeRoy had tire and brake problems and they never did get to see the car museum. Otherwise it was a fun weekend. Tech tips included an article on silicon brake fluid and a good way to remove the rain gutter trim without damaging it: would you believe you can use an old bottle opener! The index to Volume 18 rounded out this short newsletter. FOURTEEN YEARS AGO The December 1985 cover showed Santa with a clutter of just about every Corvair model made. President Clayborne ran the meeting; we had no guests. We had a new member, though: Larry Blair who had a '63 Monza coupe and a '64 Spyder convertible. Our Christmas party was to be at Kirtland AFB Officers' Club. We planned a foray to the Flea Market to raise money and get rid of junk, err, treasures. We wanted to have a meeting in Santa Fe. We wanted a photo session; maybe part of an Aspencade. Tri-State planning continued. Clayborne's "Blower Breeze" said they just don't make cars like they used to. LeRoy said we'd have visitors at the next meeting from the New Mexico MVD. They would address how to get title to a titleless vehicle and how new seat belt laws apply to the various Corvairs, some of which came with seat belts and some not. Bill Reider's column discussed cleaning your oil cooler: they are out of sight and tend to collect leaves and dust. You also need to check your air filter, PVC valve and parking brake and clutch cables. How many of us have a Corvair with factory lube in the rear wheel bearings, steering box and clutch cross shaft? A tech tip from Chevrolet told how to adjust your accelerator linkage and how to install a harmonic balancer. We had a year-end financial statement and the index to volume 11 of the Newsletter. TWENTY-ONE YEARS AGO The December 1978 cover showed a Monza GT and an early convertible. Sylvan ran the meeting; Les Campbell took notes and reported $350 in the bank. We changed the constitution to have separate offices for secretary and treasurer and we would have an appointed membership chairperson. Sylvan proposed we have a name for the Newsletter other than "Corvairs of New Mexico" and suggestions were solicited. We planned a dinner at Bella Vista in December. We printed a newspaper article on Alvin Grille of New Orleans who owned 175 Corvairs. Tech tips came from our German member, Markus Rothmeyer, on adjusting thermostats, from Francis Boydston on timing your engine without a timing light, from Joel Nash on NGK and Bosch spark plugs for Corvairs, and Norm Brand on where to get spark plugs. This issue concluded with the first CNM Newsletter index which covered every issue published to date. Your editor provided a history of the Newsletter (Mark Morgan produced the first issue, dated January 1975) and its somewhat irregular numbering scheme. Looking through this index today I see quite a few classic articles that are still well worth reading twenty-something years later. Your editor asked for information on the history of the Club and called for a detailed article for our March 1978 anniversary issue. ============================================================================ C O R V A I R S o f N E W M E X I C O C O M I N G E V E N T S ============================================================================ | | | | | D e c e m b e r | J a n u a r y | F e b r u a r y | | | | | | : : : 1 2 3 4 | : : : : : : 1 | : : 1 2 3 4 5 | | 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 | 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 | 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 | | 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 | 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 | 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 | | 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 | 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 | 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 | | 26 27 28 29 30 31 : | 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 | 27 28 29 : : : : | | : : : : : : : | 30 31 : : : : : | : : : : : : : | | : : : : 1 9 9 9 | : : : : 2 0 0 0 | : : : : : : : | ============================================================================ Wed 1st Dec 7:30 PM Regular Meeting - CASA CHEVROLET 7201 Lomas NE Sun 5th Dec 11:00 AM Christmas Party, KAFB Officers' Club - Rita Gongora Wed 15th Dec 5:00 PM Board Meeting - House of Covers Fri 24th Dec 9:00 PM Newsletter Deadline - Jim Pittman Fri 31st December 1999 Purportedly the last day of the Twentieth Century Sat 1st January 2000 Supposedly the first day of the Twenty-first Century Wed 5th Jan 7:30 PM Regular Meeting - CASA CHEVROLET 7201 Lomas NE Wed 19th Jan 5:00 PM Board Meeting - House of Covers Wed 2nd Feb 7:30 PM Regular Meeting - CASA CHEVROLET 7201 Lomas NE Wed 16th Feb 5:00 PM Board Meeting - House of Covers =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=++=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= ===== FROM THE DRIVER'S SEAT Hurley Wilvert I hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving and didn't eat too much dessert. I know I probably did. Last month Joel Craig asked us to bring some cars to show to a pet adoption promotion that was held at the Canine Country Club in Paradise Hills on October 30th. We had six cars to display for the folks that came by to look at the pets that needed a home. Mark Domzalski, Joel Craig, Jerry Goffe, Steve Gongora, Wendell Walker and I brought our cars. We got to witness a contest for the most look alike owner and pet. Very interesting! It was a very nice day and quite a few people were interested in our cars. Thank you all for helping Joel. The 6th of November was our regular Highway 66 litter cleanup. The amount of trash that is thrown on the side of the road is incredible. We found a bench car seat and full sheets of 4 ft. x 8 ft. plywood among the usual bottles, cans, cups, plastic bags and bits of aluminum foil. My son and I filled up three trash bags, but David and Del Patten filled eight! Ollie Scheflow runs this program that does a good job keeping an historic part of Albuquerque from becoming an eyesore. Thanks Ollie and everyone who participates in this worthy task! Next month is our Christmas Party which is being held again at Kirtland Officer's Club. This was a great party last year and promises to be again. Thanks to Hector Gongora for getting us in the Officer's Club and to Rita Gongora for making the arrangements. If you can make it, you should not miss this party. The food is great and so is the company. I have been traveling a lot with my job lately. I've been going to Phoenix quite a bit and I decided on one of my trips to visit with the president of the Cactus Corvair Club, Dave Nissen. Dave invited me to his house and we had a great time talking about Corvairs and both our clubs. Dave would be interested in having joint participation in events between the Phoenix and the New Mexico clubs. He said he would like to come to our Tri-State meet in May and I told him he would be more than welcome. The Cactus Corvairs are planning a rally across Arizona on May 5th and 6th. This is a timed rally that starts at Douglas, Arizona, and ends in Laughlin, Nevada. This is great event for those of you who like casino gambling. Dave invited CNM members to participate. The entry fee of $75 includes six meals, a rally shirt and a dash plaque. If you are interested, get in touch with me, I have entry forms. I finally got the windshield replaced in my 61 Monza Coupe, just in time to see a news program about junk cars on the roads of New Mexico. Junk cars being ones that have among other things, a broken or cracked windshield. According to the news program and the police officers that appeared on the program, a cracked or broken windshield is an equipment violation. This is one they sure don't enforce. It seems as though 1/4 to 1/3rd of the cars in the East Mountain area where I live have a cracked windshield! I-40 through the canyon will do that to you. Every car I have owned in the 8 years I have lived in the East Mountains has had a cracked windshield at one time or another. One of the prices you pay for living in Paradise, I guess. See you at the December meeting. This will be the last meeting of the century. Hope you all make it. - Hurley ===== CLUB HOLDS LAST HIGHWAY CLEAN-UP OF MILLENNIUM Ollie Scheflow We had a perfect Fall day for our final 1999 clean-up of CNM's mile on old Route 66. The sun was bright, the sky blue, the weather warm, there was no wind, and we had brilliant Fall foliage to look at. Participating were: Debbie Deck, Del and Dave Patten, Jim Pittman, Ollie Scheflow, Julie and Chuck Vertrees, and Hurley Wilvert and son. Twenty-two bags of trash plus an old door and other trash too large or too heavy to bag was collected. Dave Patten started to pick up a piece of trash, but when it moved he discovered a small rattlesnake. Needless to say, he decided not to bag it! The wildlife Debbie found was somewhat less dangerous: a thoroughly dead bobcat. We guessed he made a late-night attempt to cross the freeway several months ago, misjudged the traffic, and was turned into instant coyote snack. During 1999, seventeen individuals participated in the Route 66 clean-ups and collected sixty-three bags of trash. Sometime early next year, CNM members will be back out there to get a start on gathering up trash from the twenty-first century. ===== STILL FULLA GAS Del Patten (Del.Patten plk.af.mil) Since I didn't remember to give Jim the article I was volunteered for regarding the anniversary lunch we had last month and since he filled the newsletter with photos of all the happy people dining at the Route 66 Diner, you will have to suffer with the written word this month! I won't waste many words on the day in question since a picture is worth a thousand words but we sure ate good! Kim and I putted up Central in the Greenbrier which other than being extraordinarily ugly, isn't particularly noticeable as a Corvair to the common man admiring the traffic and the beautiful day! I always like the wait to leave on these jaunts since you actually have time then to admire each other's car and generally catch up on the latest doings of people we don't see often like Bill McClellan and his wife! But the short trip was nice and the food was pretty good with Larry Blair eventually losing face to a huge bowl of cobbler and ice cream... I think he still got the best deal though! Afterwards while Jim was trying to catch us all in the frame of Wendell's digital camera at the same time, we gathered to admire Steve's latest addition to his coupe... lovely leather Recaro's and whiz bang door panels modified with some BMW parts... pretty slick! Guess I'll have to settle for a bottle of that leather smelling stuff from AutoZone! As for Larry being granted membership in the exalted (and sometimes beleaguered!) Dummy of the Month Club, I must protest. As the sole member and de factor president of that organization, I have clearly set the standard for membership qualifications, one of them being not just doing something dumb but doing it twice... sorry Larry, but doing two different things on the same car does not count for initial membership. You must do the same thing twice on the same car, preferably in the same 24 hour period. Perhaps the board (me!) will consider your application as an auxiliary member but full membership is denied! I can be bribed of course, but there doesn't seem to be a long line of candidates willing to admit their folly so I suppose I'll never be able to buy that house next door to the Clinton's in New York! Ah well, life is often a bowl of oreos and no milk! But all potential candidates are welcomed to contact me directly for membership requirements rather than getting their hopes up by consulting with Sylvan... go right to the top... or bottom? -- Del ===== Subject: RON PELES ON TIRES (VV) To: virtualvairs skiblack.com From: "Ronald Peles" (rpeles ptdprolog.net) Gentlemen, yesterday at the AACA Fall National Meet at Hershey, PA, I spoke to the folks at Coker Tire regarding the possiblility of reproducing 7.00 x 13 tires for our Corvairs. They informed me that if the Coker family can make money reproducing the tires and offering them for sale, they would probably do so. You may say, hey, in CORSA, we like our radials. But many of us are also in AACA and in order to score well in AACA judged shows, any car older than 1967 must have bias-ply tires in the original size. No bias-ply tire in the correct 7.00 x 13 size is available for Corvair wagons or for 1966 Corvairs presently. Also, I am sure those with 1967 - 69 Corvairs would like to have an authentic tire available. Mr. Coker would like to hear from us. Please e-mail him at: CorkyC @ Coker.com Please forward this message around to other Corvairs folks. Thanks. Ron Peles Robert W. Attending were: Steve and Bernadette Gongora; Sylvan Zurcher; Tarmo and Kay Sutt and their exchange student, Judita Bacinskaite; Mark and Elizabeth Domzalski; Debbie, Dennis, Michael and Steven Pleau; and a special appearance by Bill, Betty, Eileen & Matthew Lawless. Bernadette, Michael, Steven and Matthew participated in the valve cover race sponsored by the Cactus Corvair club with Bernadette taking second and Michael taking third in the Junior division. Debbie, Bernadette, Matthew, Michael and Steven all participated in the creeper races with Bernadette placing second in Juniors. Debbie was also second in the ladies division although only one other lady raced (I have it on tape). The Lawlesses entered their red 1964 convertible (ex Sutt) and Mark entered his Rampside in the show-and-shine, although neither vehicle placed. Sylvan moved a pile of parts. Mark sold a few and he also sold Ruth's wheels and tires. The Gongoras, Sutts and Pleaus were buyers with Steve getting one of the bests deals at the swap meet, a new never- installed, Lakewood windshield. As usual the weather was great. We camped in our Pop-up trailer on the field and the kids had a blast. We had a large open area in front of the trailer where they kicked their soccers balls, ran and got plenty of exercise. The were so tired at the end of both days they fell asleep within minutes of going to bed. Ralph and Shirley McDonald from Colorado had the camping space next to us and Debbie promptly told them we would not put up with any partying and they obeyed. Ralph had a lot of shiny chrome parts and I think he sold some. For any CNM members who have never been, the fan belt toss makes a good fall vacation. It is the first weekend of November that does not conflict with Halloween. It is usually the second largest Corvair event each year after the National Convention. While it revolves around swapping parts it is also a huge social event. The setting is the former California Angels spring training practice field which is just a huge grass field. There are no moving events (rally, auto cross, econo run) or concours. The only events are the show and shine and a few gimmick events like the fan belt toss, valve cover racing and creeper racing. It is known for its raffle. They raffle hundreds of prizes, Corvair or otherwise. The event runs from Friday noon to Sunday noon with all the unclaimed raffle prizes raffled again around noon on Sunday. We hope to see you all there next year, Dennis ===== ENCHANTED CORVAIRS NEWSLETTER - INDEX FOR 1999 EVERY MONTH OR AS AVAILABLE Meeting Minutes ....... the Secretary Treasury Report ...... the Treasurer Dues Due ...........
