John has purchased a 1966 yellow Monza cpe and is in the process of renovating it for participation in various CNM activities. John states the reason for the purchase of a Corvair is that Anne decided that he needed a Toy. A warm and hearty CNM WELCOME to John and Anne. - Sylvan ===== DECEMBER MEETING MINUTES by Jim Pittman The December 6th meeting was called to order by President Hurley Wilvert at 7:33 at our temporary meeting place, JB's Restaurant. Secretary Chuck Vertrees was not present so your editor typed up these notes. Sylvan Zuercher introduced a new member, John Wiker, who bought Steve Lesher's Corvair. John was warmly welcomed to CNM and to CORSA. Hurley asked if the December meeting minutes should be accepted as published and there was a unanimous vote for acceptance. Mark Domzalski immediately called for a recount of the votes. Pressing on, Treasurer Wendell said we had $329.57 in the checking account and $5,380.16 in the Money Market account for a total of $5,709.75. There was no mention of how much money we spent on the election campaign or on post-election legal maneuvers. Joe Trujillo at our Christmas party said that our room at Galles would be ready next month; he apologized for the inconvenience and said he appreciated our tolerance of the delay, but said the room would be much improved. CAR COUNCIL - Mark Martinek was pleased to report that the next meeting would be held AFTER January's CNM meeting, so there was no report at this time. CORSA NEWS: Mark Domzalski said he had appointed a new merchandising chair: Debbie Pleau; also he had appointed a five-member committee to assist CPF with the Corvair Museum; unfortunately I did not get all the names. The committee's charter is to ask tough questions including criteria for how to select a site for the museum. There was discussion of the remoteness of former museum sites. Wendell said that the Wheels Museum has purchased the old railroad shops and someone suggested that maybe we can get room there for the Corvair Museum? OLD BUSINESS: Our new license plates are here. They are $5.00 each or two for $12.00 and Mark Martinek wanted to know if he'd get a dollar discount for turning in his old plate. This issue was not resolved. So bring your $5.00 to the next meeting and pick up your new and GREAT LOOKING plate. Also, Steve reported that our new CNM business cards were ready; he passed them around. Steve did an excellent job on these cards. Hurley mentioned the Christmas party on Sunday; all who attended had a good time; the food was great and the atmosphere at the KAFB officers club was really nice. Dennis Pleau presented this year's Ike Meissner Award to Rita Gongora who was completely surprised; she recovered and made a good acceptance speech. Rita certainly deserved the award as she has done a lot of work for the club. The CNM web page is up and running, thanks to Steve Gongora. There are several good pictures; all members who can should log on and take a look at it. Hurley said we still needed someone to take over as Property Manager, to handle Club items like the license plates. Ruth promptly volunteered to do that. NEW BUSINESS: Hurley ran across two Corvair for sale. One is a 1969 500 with an early engine. Condition is ratty. They wanted $3500 but have come down to $2000. You can contact Jean at 3201 Candelaria NE but the car is in El Paso at present. The other Corvair is owned by Tom McClure; it is a 1963 Monza 2-door automatic and he wants to GIVE it away. It has not run in years but has a good body. Call Tom at 266-1215 (work) or 839-4468 (home). We need to plan events for the coming year. Some obvious suggestions are: A garage tour; the Museum Show; the Tri State event in Colorado; the State Fair car show; the Fall Swap Meet. What other activities might we do? If anyone wants the club to do something, suggest it to one of the officers, or volunteer to organize something. To get things rolling, Hurley volunteered to have members come to his house to work on his car, and someone suggested going to Del's to work on his van. Del suggested we should put on another funkhana. Robert suggested another trip to the VLA Radio Telescope. Maybe we could have lunch at the old hotel in Socorro: the Valverde? Mark Domzalski suggested a mystery tour. Steve said that last year's progressive dinner was popular. Robert Gold said that next month at our Galles meeting the Route 66 folks will be back to talk to us on the history of the highway. (Note that the 75th anniversary event is in July and it will be a big event in Albuquerque.) We ran out of new business to discuss and the meeting was adjourned at 8:12 PM and then we had a short but interesting talk by Steve Gongora on purchasing and installing convertible tops. ===== DECEMBER BOARD NOTES Chuck Vertrees The meeting was called to order at House of Covers on December 20th. Present were Hurley Wilvert, Robert Gold, Sylvan Zuercher, Jim Pittman, Wendell Walker, Steve Gongora and Chuck Vertrees. The minutes of the last board meeting were approved. Treasurer Wendell Walker reported that as of 12/20, CNM had $364.57 in the checking account and $5,407.50 in the Money Market account for a total worth of $5,772.07. The main topic was to start to schedule next year's events. LeRoy Rogers has a garage tour planned for February. It was also suggested that we have another VLA tour, including the facility in Socorro. We will need to contact Jerry Goffe on this since he is the one with the contact at the VLA. Del Patten suggested to Hurley that we have another Fun-Kana. The problem with that is that we no longer have access to the parking lots that were previously used. The board decided to have Del see if he can find a location. Mark (and I didn't find out which Mark) suggested another mystery tour. Sylvan Zuercher still has all the information from the tour that we took to Grants on old Route 66 some years ago. Hurley will check with the SCCA about joining them on one of their Autocross events. Then a discussion took place about the possibility of taking a trip on one of the three trains available. The proposed schedule for 2001 events is as follows: JANUARY: __Open__ FEBRUARY: Garage Tour MARCH: Progressive Dinner APRIL: __Open__ MAY: Tri-state, Museum show JUNE: __Open__ JULY: Santa Fe Car Show JULY: Route 66 celebration AUGUST: Camping Trip SEPTEMBER: State Fair Show OCTOBER: Aspencade NOVEMBER: Potluck/Auction DECEMBER: Christmas Dinner This is not carved in stone and it has three open dates that we can put in other proposed functions. The success of the proposed calendar will depend on the members of CNM helping in the planing and preparation of these events. Some can be put together very easily while others take many hours of preparation. Please help where you can. Walt Davison has requested copies of "Care and Feeding" to help run the tech sessions at the Chicago CORSA convention. Ruth Boydston has volunteered to be the CNM properties manager. She will have available License Plates, patches, etc. It was decided that new members will be given on joining a "Care & Feeding" book, a License Plate and a name badge as part of their joining. Sylvan reported that we only have about three blank name badges left. He was authorized to get a price on new badges and it was decided that the logo would be changed to the one that we are using now -- i.e., from CORSA to CNM. A new silk screen will have to be made. The last time we got 50 blanks and they lasted a long time. He will also find out about jacket patch prices since we are very low on them. Sylvan also showed the board a "Spark Plug" award that he had received many years ago. It was suggested that a similar award could be created and given out two or three times a year to someone who had done something special for CNM. We will check with the members and see if there is someone who could make the base. Sylvan has possibly also found a new printer. There is a possibility that he can supply a greater service for very little more money. The board will follow up on this. The meeting was adjourned at 18:10. ===== FROM THE DRIVER'S SEAT Hurley Wilvert I want to wish everyone in CNM a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. I also want to thank all the people who have worked all year to make our club the best car club in New Mexico. You've helped put on great events and do all the behind the scenes work that just keeps things going. You folks are the backbone of our club and we deeply appreciate your efforts to help us all enjoy participation in CNM. The annual Christmas party at the Kirtland Officer's Club was another great success. The company and the food was terrific. The Ike Meissner Award this year went to Rita Gongora who richly deserved it for all her work for the club, including organizing the Christmas Party. By the look on her face, she had no idea that she was being considered. Thanks for the Christmas Party also go to Hector Gongora who makes it possible for us to use the Officer's Club. Next year we have the most popular events returning and we are considering some new ones. We want to have events that all members can enjoy, we just need to know what you would enjoy. We will discuss those at the January meeting, so come on down and give us your two cents worth. One of the first events of the year will be one of Leroy's interesting and informative garage tours. So far, the destination is a secret. Remember our web page is now up to date thanks to Steve Gongora and Chuck Vertrees. Those of you with Internet access can check out the up to date schedule of events and see the latest in photos from recent events. January's meeting will be back at Galles Chevrolet in our regular meeting room. We look forward to seeing you all there. The year 2001 marks the 75th anniversary of the historic road. In honor of that anniversary a number of events are being planned. To get us in the mood, Corvairs of New Mexico will be hosting on January 3 a talk by Rich Williams, President of the New Mexico Route 66 Association. Rich will give us a historical perspective on the venerable highway. Let's have a good turn out for this interesting presentation. ---Robert ===== LADIES' CNM MEETING Anne Mae Gold I hope all of the Corvair families have a wonderful Christmas and a 2001 full of car problem free motoring days! Just a quick reminder that the Corvair Ladies will meet the second Saturday of January (January 13) at the Gold residence. We live at 1301 Valencia Dr NE. We are just north of Lomas, between San Pedro and San Mateo, south of Constitution. Valencia goes through to Constitution, but not to Lomas. To pin it down a bit more... we are between Marble and Mountain. I'll have snacks and warm beverages (cold ones too!) so please join us for fun conversation and handicrafts. I hope to see many of you there! Happy, happy, happy! -- Anne Mae ===== Subject: THANK YOU From: Dennis & Debbie Pleau (dpleau@efortress.com) Jim, Can you please include our thanks in the next newsletter... My heartfelt thanks to the Stitch-n-Bitch group for the absolutely awesome wallhanging that you presented me at the Christmas Brunch. It is beautiful and will always have a special place in my heart and in my home. I wish that this group had started ten years ago when we first moved to Albuquerque based on the wonderful fellowship that I've experienced this past year but am thankful that I got to enjoy its first year of existence. I also want to thank the entire Corvairs of New Mexico Club. Thank you! These two words just don't seem to be enough to express what this club has meant to me and my family these past ten years. We have some wonderful memories that we'll be taking with us to Colorado. Thank you all for your friendship to us and we look forward to seeing all who come to the Tri-State in May. -- Debbie, Dennis, Michael and Steven Pleau PS - We sold the house!!! ===== SEVEN YEARS AGO IN C.N.M. January 1994 Volume 20 Number 1 The cover listed the Ten Commandments for the Car Collector. President Del ran the meeting. New members were Mark Domzalski and Greg Corazzi. Treasurer Will reported that we had $1175 in the bank; we spent $3647 during our 1993 fiscal year. LeRoy turned over a $50 check from the Car Council for our work at the swap meet. We discussed a trip to the Bosque del Apache bird refuge and planned other events for the year, including a garage tour and the Tri-State in Pagosa Springs. A talk by Stanley Degree about the Pikes Peak race history and the Unsers rounded out our meeting. The report on our Christmas party declared it excellent. Steve Gongora won the Ike Meissner Award for 1993. We were entertained by a well-known and much-appreciated quartet. Debbie Pleau reported on committee activities for the 1996 CORSA Convention; we were really getting into serious planning for the event. This issue's tech tips included how to paint a carburetor (talcum powder?) and how to install top shroud and carbs not once but twice twice (forgotten fan belt?) and how to nearly cut your finger off when rotating tires (Honda disc brake caliper?) in case anyone was interested. A list of members wrapped up the issue. FOURTEEN YEARS AGO: The January 1987 cover was another "Corvairs will take over the World" with global map. We had almost $921 in the bank. Clayborne described our Christmas dinner as a quiet success. Remember how Jim Arnholz was to speak to us but chair backs got in the way? LeRoy was gearing up for a March auction (why don't we have these anymore?) and we had sixty-two names on our member list, only two of them out-of-state. Jim complained about vibrations in his 1966 Corsa clutch. A newspaper article noted that the book UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED was 20 years old and said that Ralph was just as critical of the automobile industry as he was when his book targeted the 1960-1964 Corvair. "Our society knows a good deal more about building safer machines than it does about getting people to behave safely in an almost infinite variety of driving situations," Nader wrote. "And whether motorists are momentarily careless or intoxicated or are driving normally when they are struck by another vehicle is entirely irrelevant to the responsibility of the automobile makers to build safer cars." TWENTY-ONE YEARS AGO: A Corvair 95 van was our January 1980 cover car. We had a slide show featuring several CNM events and the CORSA national convention. Our December dinner at Bella Vista was a great success. An article by Ike Meissner claimed "highest mileage" for his one-owner 1961 Greenbrier. Ike said he had done some 260,000 in this vehicle; the engine was upgraded at 110,000 miles and rebuilt at 190,000 miles due to a broken crankshaft. He told how he managed to rack up so many miles in only nineteen years: he used to think nothing of driving 80 miles to a movie or restaurant, and he drove 102 miles each way to work for a year. Overall gas mileage for this Greenbrier was 18.55 MPG and on a trip it would get 22. Ike said he planned to completely restore it one of these days. Unfortunately, by the time the article was published Ike had been in an automobile accident and we had lost a unique CNM member, Corvair mechanic and friend. Tech tips included how to keep those pesky squirrels out of your engine compartment (thanks, Francis) and a list of many Corvair parts and where to get them (thanks, George Morin). ===== CORVAIR PRICE GUIDE reported by Bill Reider Here are the December 2000 prices of Corvairs from Old Cars Price Guide.
