During her transition, she was surrounded by the love of immediate family that joined her in life and the love that will precede her. Ilva has requested that her physical remains be donated to Medical Science. The University of New Mexico School of Medicine has accepted this offer. There will be no funeral. There will be a gathering of friends and fava. We will announce details and dates shortly. Attached is a recent picture of Ilva... [See photo gallery... I still feel that she is still here and will be with me for some time, until we are joined together again in the UNM "Rose Garden" (her and my ashes will be placed there). I still have an assortment of plates and things that held food. If you left any of your items here, please call me and I will deliver them to their owners. With much love for our many friends of the Corvair Club, Wendy Walker ===== "People whom fortune has surprised with a reward for which there is no natural reason flowing out of their actions are easily tempted to lose sight of the necessary relationship between cause and effect. All officers except the Vice-President were present. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. Treasurer Wendell Walker reported that CNM has $218.44 in the checking account and $5,481.69 in the money market account for a total worth of $5,700.13. Sylvan Zuercher reported that there were no guests present, but that a possible new member, the person who bought Ruth Boydston's truck, plans to attend the next meeting. Mark Martinek reported on the Car Council meeting. The gist will be elsewhere in the newsletter. Important things for your calendar are the Museum Car Show on May 20th for those not going to the Tri-State and the All Clubs Picnic on August the 6th. (CNM turnout for this has been very poor the last two years.) Mark Domzalski asked all the members to bring the ballot from their CORSA Communique to the May meeting so they can all be sent in together. At the last election 13% of the membership voted which is as good as or better than ever before. Let's make it better this year! The Funkahna scheduled for April has been replaced with the Progressive Dinner on Saturday April 28th. It will start at the Goffe's at 16:30, then on to the Golds' and then to Ruth Boydston's. The new name badges are now available and are quite attractive and are only $5.00. A sheet was circulated for those who want a new badge to sign. The first drive over the high flyover bridge of the Big-I project took place with eight Corvairs in the group of cars that went over. That is the bridge that CNM members and our guests were able to tour and walk on a few weeks earlier. Larry Blair suggested that those going to Manitou Springs might like to convoy up. They would leave at 07:00 from the Bernalillo exit on I-25. I don't know how many are planning to convoy, but it would probably be best to contact Larry. Jim Pittman asked how many had seen the color pictures of the Big-I tour on the web page. I did not get a count of the hands raised. The meeting was adjourned at 20:06 and was followed by a presentation from Clark's Corvair Parts. ===== BOARD MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees The April board meeting was called to order at 17:20 at House of Covers. Present were Hurley Wilvert, Robert Gold, Sylvan Zuercher, Jim Pittman, Steve Gongora and Chuck Vertrees. The minutes of the last board meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. There was no treasurer's report. The progressive dinner was mentioned. It will start at 16:30 on Saturday the 28th at Sylvia and Jerry Goffe's house. Robert Gold told us that Hurley will give the presentation at the May meeting. It will be on how to replace windshields. If there is enough interest, Hurley will sponsor a hands on tech session at his house. He has an early model that the windshield can be removed and replaced in. Sylvan tried to get a bid on patches, but the place he has used in the past has closed and moved. He has not been able to find out where they have moved. Steve is going to get a quote from Wearguard who did our shirts. He will get a bid on 50 patches. Jim reported that he has obtained the "St. Francis of Corvair" plaques for the Tri-State presentation. The price was $49.35 and it was approved that the treasurer will reimburse him for this amount. Jim also reported that the committee to address the Boydston/Meissner awards had not had a formal meeting so far. The committee needs to report to the Board well before this year's Christmas party. There is no information on the Tri-State attendance plaque. As you may recall, last year the plaque was stolen at the Tri-State event in Albuquerque, and it was stated that CNM would replace it. However, it was also stated that it would be replaced by the Rocky Mountain club. We don't know the latest on this. Debbie and Dennis Pleau told Jim that they were going to check with Laura Wilshire of Rocky Mountain, but we have not yet heard anything back from them. Steve said that a David Alderette (either 730-2003 or 730-2803) has a black and purple 1966 4-door that he would like to sell. The meeting was adjourned at 17:45. ===== FROM THE DRIVER'S SEAT Hurley Wilvert This month I would like to thank those in our club who really put in the effort to keep things going. Last month, Ruth Boydston, Jerry and Sylvia Goffe, Anne Mae Gold and Rita Gongora quickly pitched in to organize the Progressive Dinner for April after we were unable to schedule another event. By the time you read this, the dinner will be history and I'm sure that all those that enjoy good food will have already stuffed themselves. I resemble that remark. Every month, Jim Pittman spends a considerable amount of time putting together this newsletter, which I feel is the best there is. He has to try to get articles for it from the rest of the members and is always soliciting input. He also has to remind me every month to submit this piece. I am glad we have Jim, so that we can enjoy this fine publication every month. On an ongoing basis, Sylvan Zuercher is helping Corvair owners from everywhere keep their cars running. Despite not being able to run a 4-minute mile, Sylvan is always willing to look at someone's car or listen to the symptoms to try to help fix the problem. Steve Gongora is always there to do legwork to get things done. He makes phone calls, visits vendors, and relays information that helps keep things rolling. Robert Gold has come up with some really interesting talks and presentations for our meetings. Next month he has enlisted me to talk about windshield removal and installation! Chuck Vertrees is always there to take the minutes of the meetings and Wendell Walker manages our money month in and month out. There are many others behind the scenes, some that I may not even know about. I thank you all for making this a great club! Hurley Wilvert - President ===== Tri-state 2001 - Manitou Springs Debbie Pleau I'm not sure what information you've received so far regarding the Tri-State but the March, 2001 Drip Line (Pikes Peak Corvair Club) had the following: Corvair Tri-State May 18 - 19, 2001 Enjoy the splendor of springtime in the Rocky Mountains and attend the annual TRI-STATE CORVAIR MEET in historic Manitou Springs, Colorado. The area offers such sites as Pikes Peak, the Air Force Academy and the Garden of the Gods, just to name a few, plus many more beautiful places close to this area. Plan to stay longer and see them all. Plan to attend the Friday night "Pizza in the Park" on May 18th for $5.00 per person. The Show & Shine will be Saturday morning, May 19th, at the Garden of the Gods Visitors Center. Tour the area in the afternoon and end up with a wonderful banquet for $18.00 per person and $10.00 for children under 12 years of age. Please make your reservations now as we need a head count. Call John or Dee Glusick at (719) 372-3766 or write P.O. Box 126, Penrose, CO 81240-0126. You can also e-mail: glusick@prodigy.net Rooms will be available at Castaways - (877) 586-3300 starting at $69.00 until April 17th or the Alpine Motel - (800) 289-5455 starting at $49.00. Hope to see you there. *********************** It was wonderful to see those of you that we got to see at the "Celebration of Ilva's Life" at the Walkers' on Sunday April 8th. We look forward to seeing many of you again in May at this year's Tri-State being hosted by the Pikes Peak Corvair Club in Manitou Springs. The first thing I want to mention is that it is not an eight-hour drive from Albuquerque to Manitou Springs, unless of course you stop and picnic along the way. When we headed home from the Walkers', we hit I-25 at the 243 exit at 2:57 PM. With a quick stop in Romeroville for coffee and potty, going through the drive-thru in Raton for dinner and then gas and potty in Pueblo, we reached the exit for Manitou Springs at 8:10 PM. It was about a 5 hour and 15 minute drive. We drove anywhere from the speed limit to about 3-5 miles over. Once you reach the Manitou Springs exit, it's only about 10 minutes away. For those of you who will be coming up on Thursday, the Pleaus would like to invite you all over for a barbecue that evening. We had planned for this to be on Friday but the Pikes Peak club is hosting "Pizza in the Park." For those of you who don't want to pay for an extra night's lodging, we have some extra beds and plenty of floor space. If you plan on coming to our barbecue, please either EMAIL us at dpleau@efortress.com or call us at 719-494-1380 so that we can get a head count. Directions to our place are as follows: I-25 to exit 153 (Interquest Pkwy); Follow this through two stop lights past the New Life Church and Pikes Peak Community College (at the first stop light it becomes Hwy 83); After a little over 7 miles, you'll come up and out of the trees and at the start a slight decline you'll see a + which is indicating Hodgen; Turn right on Hodgen; Drive on Hodgen for almost 9 miles, going through two intersections with flashing yellow lights; the second of these is Meridian; Take the first left after Meridian which is Great Smoky Avenue; Great Smoky ends at Forest Green; Turn left; Take the first right which is Green Meadow Drive. We are the second house on the right (12850 Green Meadow Drive); you can't miss all the Corvairs. We truly look forward to seeing all of you who can make it up this way for this year's Tri-State. The President of the Club that is. Hurley Wilvert will impart his extensive knowledge concerning Corvair windshield removal and installation in a tech talk at the conclusion of the meeting. This will be a chance for those of you who have been suffering with pitted, cracked, or otherwise defective windshields to finally find relief. Even better, Hurley is looking for someone who has a Corvair in need of a new windshield to serve in a demonstration of removal/installation techniques. This onsite demonstration will take place at a later time as a followup to Hurley's talk. The replacement windshield will need to be supplied by the participant. I'm sure we'll find Hurley's talk enlightening and that the result will be perfectly clear for all those attending. -- Robert L. Gold ===== May meeting for CNM Ladies - Anne Mae Gold We had a wonderful gathering up in Santa Fe at the Sutt home. Thanks to Kay's loan of a hat, I will only have a few more wrikles from the sun damage I was working on! The Pleaus stopped in and we had a real party going on. We discussed the fact that May is the Tri-State and that most of us would be out of town, so there will be no May gathering of the CNM Ladies. June's update will be in the next letter, but as of now it will be hosted by Brenda Stickler up in her cabin in the Jemez. Stay tuned for further news. Happy hoppy! May 1994 Volume 20 Number 5 The cover showed a Rampside FC. President Del ran the meeting and Treasurer Will reported $1075 after BMW expenses were taken care of. Details of our participation in the Museum Car Show were ironed out. Other upcoming events, trips and tech sessions were discussed. Debbie Pleau kept us up-to-date on plans for the 1996 convention. We had our famous photo rally and according to reporter Jim we all had lots of fun along with our frustration at counting those "HILL BLOCKS VIEW - 35 MPH" signs. Del Patton contributed a tech tip on replacing shroud seals and said it was easy if you make your own new staples out of wire. Another tech tip said we could get a 68-cent space-age gasket for drain plugs: GM number 24571185. Finally, a blurb from the North American MGA Register claimed that oil leaks on British sports cars were actually a feature, not a bug. Read this if you have a poorly-maintained Corvair and need to tell your friends with Hondas or Fords why your car is followed around by a mist of petroleum droplets. Fourteen Years Ago The May 1987 cover was a secret spy photo of the 1988 Corvair; well, so Bill Reider told us. Actually it was a drawing produced by a new program he had just installed on his Apple III computer. V-P Tarmo ran our meeting and Treasurer LeRoy reported $690 in the bank. Our auction made $75. Steve was working on seats for the Club's library van. Jerry told us how to keep oil out of the engine area when doing your annual change. President Clayborne encouraged us to clean off those nasty oil deposits before showing our cars at the Tri-State in Ouray. A tip called "The Dime Test" revealed the secret to tigntening valve covers "just enough" to seal and not leak. A news item said Don Yenko had died in a plane crash. Bill Reider previewed our Museum car show; we treated it as a major concours event following CORSA's rules. Twenty-one Years Ago The May 1980 issue was our first without some kind of "picture" on the cover; instead it had a tech tip by Sylvan about proper positioning of spark plug leads from the distributor. We had 31 members and guests at the April meeting. Mary Twilley donated a handmade billfold with a Corvair design to be raffled. Bill Reider gave a talk on carburetor balancing. Tech tips told how to remove door trim, how to build and use a special oil pressure tool, how to restore rubber moulding, how to properly connect the condenser on the generator housing, how to use a 3/4" 12-point socket to remove a 5/8" square plug and how to use an 11/16" 12-point socket to remove a transmission filler plug; and finally, a product called "Rain-X" was praised for keeping the windshield clear during our pesky New Mexico spring downpours: you know, the kind where we get a third of our annual rainfall allocation in twenty minutes. * * * * * * * * * * FOR SALE, TRADE OR WANTED * * * * * * * * * * * * * FOR SALE: 1968 Corvair Monza 2-dr 42-K miles. Vic, It sounds like the turn signal switch is still bad. If the turn signal on the right rear works and the left rear brake light works, the switch is the only common point. Fast version about the turn signal switch connections: a. Black wire: Horn: always 12 volts except when it gets grounded by the horn button. b. Purple wire: Flasher: always 12 volts when no turn is selected; flashes when a turn is selected. c. Black/white wire: from stop light switch to the turn signal switch. Works with the action of the stop light switch. d. Dark green wire: from turn signal switch to stop/turn filament of right rear lamp. 12 volts should come and go with the action of the stop light switch with no turn selected. Should flash with a right turn selected. e. Black wire with a yellow stripe: from turn signal switch to stop/turn filament of left rear lamp. 12 volts should come and go with the action of the stop light switch with no turn selected. Should flash with a left turn selected. f. Dark blue wire: to front right turn filament and right turn indicator on the instrument cluster. Should flash with a right turn selected. g. Black wire with a light blue stripe: to front left turn filament and left turn indicator on the instrument cluster. Should flash with a left turn selected. Now a Really long version 1. When the turn signal switch is in the middle position (no turn position) and the brake pedal IS NOT depressed, there should be voltage on two terminals of the steering column connector. a. Black wire: the 12 volts that gets grounded by the horn button. This is a skinny (20 gauge) black wire that is on one end of the smaller group/arc of terminals. This 12 volts should disappear whenever the horn is sounded. b. Purple wire: the 12 volts that comes from the turn signal flasher. This is a little heavier, purple, wire (18 gauge). It should be on the end of the larger group/arc of terminals. With no turn indicated, this should be a steady voltage. Vic's car will probably have these voltages. 2. When the turn signal switch is in the middle position (no turn position) and the brake pedal IS depressed, there should be voltage on five terminals of the steering column connector: a. Black wire: the previously mentioned 12 volts that gets grounded by the horn button. b. Purple wire: the previously mentioned 12 volts that comes from the turn signal flasher. A steady voltage. c. Black/white wire: a 20 gauge black wire with a white stripe that is second from the end of the larger group/arc of terminals. This is the voltage coming from the stop light switch feeding into the turn signal switch. This 12 volts should come and go with the action of the stop light switch. d. Dark green wire: 20 gauge wire at the other end of the smaller group/arc of terminals that goes from the turn signal switch to the stop/turn filament of the right rear lamp. This 12 volts should come and go with the action of the stop light switch. e. Black wire with a yellow stripe: 20 gauge, the middle of the larger group/arc of terminals that goes from the turn signal switch to the stop/turn filament of the left rear lamp. This 12 volts should come and go with the action of the stop light switch. I'll bet Vic's car is missing voltage "d" (dark green), the feed to the right rear signal lamp. This would prove the turn signal switch is bad. 3. When the turn signal switch is in the right turn position, and with the brake pedal NOT depressed, there should be voltage on four terminals of the steering column connector. When the brake pedal is depressed, a fifth terminal should get voltage. a. Black wire: the 12 volts that gets grounded by the horn button. b. Purple wire: the 12 volts that comes from the turn signal flasher. With either a left or right indicated, this should be flashing at the turn signal rate. d. Dark green wire: from the turn signal switch to the stop/turn filament of the right rear lamp. Should be flashing. f. Dark blue 20 gauge wire, second from the end on the smaller group/arc of terminals. Goes to the front right turn filament and to the right turn indicator on the instrument cluster. This should be flashing at the turn signal rate. e. Black wire with a yellow stripe: turn signal switch to the stop/turn filament of the left rear lamp. Should get voltage when the stop light switch is on. Vic's car probably has these voltages. 4. When the turn signal switch is in the left turn position, and with the brake pedal NOT depressed, there should be voltage on four terminals of the steering column connector. When the brake pedal is depressed, a fifth terminal should get voltage. a. Black wire: the 12 volts that gets grounded by the horn button. b. Purple wire: the 12 volts that comes from the turn signal flasher. With either a left or right indicated, this should be flashing at the turn signal rate. e. Black wire with a yellow stripe: goes from the turn signal switch to the stop/turn filament of the left rear lamp. g. Black wire with a light blue stripe 20 gauge wire, second from the end on the larger group/arc of terminals. Goes to the front left turn filament and to the left turn indicator on the instrument cluster. This should be flashing at the turn signal rate. d. Dark green wire: from the turn signal switch to the stop/turn filament of the right rear lamp. Should get voltage when the stop light switch is on. Vic's car will probably be missing "d" (green) again. I wanted to drive the Green Weenie ('64 convertible - 140 HP), but Kathy and reason suggested that a fresh engine, long distance and uncertain weather dictated a different vehicle. So, we loaded up the Big Red One (my Ford F-250 pickup) and got all eight cylinders (displacement about one quart each) headed toward the evening sun. Spent the night in Flagstaff and scoped out the town Thursday evening. Drove by the motel we all stayed at a few years ago - it looked the same - and provoked some good memories. Seemed to us there are a lot more lodging and eating places in Flagstaff, so accommodating the Convention there shouldn't be a problem. Snow still remained in the shade, but the night was crisp and clear. On Friday we headed north through beautiful wide open spaces of the upper Grand Canyon Valley (watch out for cops!) and stopped to tour Glen Canyon Dam and the beautiful bridge. We went all the way to the bottom of the dam and saw its huge generators - running at full tilt to provide power to California. Then, on to St. George via the east entrance to Zion National Park. Traversing a twisty road and two tunnels, we got a preview of spectacular scenery. My neck is still sore from twisting my head, and my right arm is bruised from Kathy's gentle reminders to keep my eyes on the road. Arriving in St George, we were welcomed, to a degree, by members of the Bonneville Club. Perhaps a Ford pickup didn't elicit warmth, but then, neither did my Corvair cap. We did learn that the Martineks and Rogers had arrived, so we left to stay with Kathy's sister and husband in nearby Hurricane. Next morning, Saturday, we attended the Show & Shine at J.C. Snow Park, and were pleased to see Mark and Mary Lou present with their '63 ragtop, which showed very well against the other thirty or so other cars. Winners were a beautifully restored '62 sedan, a late coupe, a very nice Rampside, and Best of Show was a '64 coupe with an unbelievable irridescent paint job. A racing Loadside drew much interest, with a big V8, nitrous oxide, and two radiators; as did a sand rail and a Devon Corvair-powered roadster. All in all, many very nice Corvairs. After the show we had a box lunch and a prize drawing was held. We were given a warm welcome by president Bruce Gwyther and had a very nice chat with Randy Kelly. Also present was Lon Wall, who provided some great door prizes. Following lunch, the Corvair convoy headed into Zion National Park, with my F-250 as the trail vehicle (fortunately, as I was able to jump start one of the 'Vairs whose battery expired). Quite simply put, Zion is so spectacular it gives one a sense of visual overload. It is almost too much beauty to comprehend. Following the tour and some hiking, the Corvair enthusiasts attended an IMAX showing of the park, an equally stunning adventure. On Sunday morning we left early, driving across the Navajo and Hopi reservations on very good roads, with very little traffic. Averaging 70 mph and 18 mpg, even with a stop at the historic Hubbell Trading post, we made it home to Albuquerque by late afternoon. All in all it was an excellent trip. The Bonneville club is large and active, and will likely be a strong presence at Flagstaff. We would do well to cultivate more contact with them. -- Larry Blair ===== QUIZ ON THE BIG-I TOUR Larry Blair RULES: You may refer to Jim Pittman's article in the last newsletter.
