Sir John Plumb recently died at the age of ninety. "Like Voltaire, Plumb held
up a historical mirror that had become quite dark with old age. He was not
sanguine about our chances of survival, and he likened modern America to the
late Roman Empire, circa 300: impossibly overextended, beleaguered by
barbarians, aware that all its glories of law and engineering might yet be
demolished by incomparably less sophisticated peoples for whom destruction is a
vocation and life is expendable." -- Simon Schama, THE NEW YORKER,

NOVEMBER MEETING
Chuck Vertrees
The meeting was called to order on 11/7/01 at 19:35 at Galles Chevrolet. All
the new officers were present. Sylvan Zuercher announced that here were no
guests or new members to introduce. The minutes of the last meeting were
approved as published in the newsletter.
Treasurer Wendell Walker reported that CNM had $244.32 in the checking account
and $5,096.16 in the money market account for a total net worth of $5,340.48.
Wendell also has a copy of the audit for the last year for those interested. He
is also concerned that we are spending more lately each month than we are
taking in, and suggested that we need to consider some form of money raising
scheme. It was brought up that some of this expending was to restock our supply
of CNM license plates and patches, some of which will be slowly returned to the
treasury as these items are sold. It was suggested that we consider a raffle at
each meeting.
Mark Martinek gave the Car Council report. An extract will be on the web page
and elsewhere in the newsletter. He said there will be no Car Council meetings
in November, December and January. The Museum car show will be May 5th and they
are looking for someone to run it.
Jerry Goffe announced that he is now an official docent and guide at Bosque del
Apache. He will be glad to lead a tour to see the cranes if any are interested.
The best time would be from mid-November through February. He could take a tour
any Saturday or Sunday. The board will take this up at the next meeting.
The CNM ladies have a meeting scheduled for the 2nd Saturday in January. All
CNM wives, girl friends, etc. are welcome. See the newsletter for time and
location.
President Robert Gold said that Wendell had ruined his life. It seems that
Wendell adjusted the throttle linkage on his Corvair-V8 and now it scares him.
He really had never known what a large block GM engine would do in the back of
a Corvair. It scares him now and he will have to learn how to drive in it all
over.
John Mattern reminded us of the band concert at Eisenhower School on Friday
evening, December 7th. Steve Gongora knows of a 1965 500 for sale, and Hurley
Wilvert has information on an all black 1966 110 with Powerglide.
OLD BUSINESS:
The Christmas dinner is all set for Sunday December 2nd at the officers club at
Kirtland AFB. Because of security procedures at the base we must all go in
together. We will meet NO LATER than 10:45 AM at the parking lot at the Wyoming
gate and be escorted in. If you are late, too bad. It was rumored that photo
IDs, car registration and proof of car insurance would also be necessary. Steve
will furnish a CNM member roster for entry if needed.
It was announced that the CNM Ladies will meet at the Gold's next Saturday from
1 to 4 PM. Snacks will be provided by the hosts (hostesses?). Bring your Arts,
Crafts, and gossip.
The potluck will be Saturday November 17th as per the information in the
November newsletter. Bring your white elephants for the auction. The proceeds
will go to the club.
Robert Gold said he was sorry that he could not make the Route 66 cleanup. It
seems that a part load of cement blocks had fallen on the shoulder that had to
be picked up. We only do this cleanup three times a year, and we should have
good turnout from CNM. There was discussion about a letter to the Albuquerque
Journal concerning the sad state of trash on Route 66.
NEW BUSINESS:
We need to give a lot of thanks to Tarmo and Steve for setting up the Shidoni
tour. The artist was better that a professional tour guide. The only problem,
according to our President, was that there was too much food at Gabriels.
Really, the service and food were excellent according to everyone who was
there.
Larry Blair has been getting quite cheap insurance on his cars. See him for
details.
The meeting was adjourned at 20:30.

NOVEMBER BOARD MEETING
Chuck Vertrees
Due to the Thanksgiving holidays, there was no November board meeting.

FROM THE DRIVERS SEAT
Robert Gold
It's been an active month in CNM land. Those of you who receive the club's
newsletter got a chance last month to see the nice pictures taken at the dinner
for the Pleaus held at Sadie's restaurant. If you looked real hard you'd see
that the Gold clan was not there. I need to take the blame for that. My wife
and two kids were all dressed up and ready to go and alas I was still on the
road back from a business trip to Ruidoso when the dinner began. I regret
missing the company of the club members and also all that good green chili!
I did get a chance to attend the Shidoni Foundry trip that was put together by
Rita and Steve Gongora and Kay and Tarmo Sutt. The day was beautiful, the
lunch was filling, and the tour of the foundry was something I will never
forget. I had to drag my kids away from the sculpture garden. The large
armadillo was their favorite.
The only negative was that I realized during the drive that the carbs on my
seldom driven 64 convertible were totally plugged up. We made it back all
right, but as soon as I got back to town the car went into the shop. So many
cars, so little time to drive them all!
A special mention needs to be made of the Route 66 cleanup in October. As most
of you know Ollie Scheflow has borne the burden of organizing this activity for
the club over many years. I count the time I have spent picking up trash along
the roadway as one thing I have done to make Albuquerque a better place.
However, in the best Murphy's Law fashion, this last time the turnout was not
so great and the result was there was some real nasty stuff to pick up. The
word I got was there were a number concrete blocks strewn about, making this
particular cleanup quite a challenge.
This just points out the need for the club to continue to support Ollie's
efforts and make it a big turnout to every cleanup. I admit I was one of those
who didn't make it, but I'm going to resolve to be there next time. The more
who show up the easier and quicker the work is. Thanks again Ollie for your
good efforts.
As I write this column Ruth Boydston is in the hospital recovering from
surgery. We all hope for her rapid recovery and look forward to seeing her
again at the CNM meetings. Personally I'll have a harder time conducting the
meetings without her guidance.
Those of you who attended November's meeting are aware that there are still
some problems with our access to the Galles' grounds. The good news was that
Joe Trujillo attended the meeting to make sure that the members made it in ok.
The not so good news was that the Galles security folks still haven't quite
gotten the idea. Most of our members made it in ok, but the back gate was
closed a tad early and some of the membership were on the outside and had to
walk a distance to attend the meeting.
I'll be working with Joe to make sure those access problems don't recur in
December. We need for a good number of you to show up to the meetings to make
this an active club!
Concerning upcoming events, by the time you read this we'll have had our
potluck dinner and raffle at the House of Covers. Many thanks to the Gongoras
for hosting this fun event. I attend raffles with much trepidation since I
wind up with all sorts of great stuff and I'm having trouble finding places to
put it. Maybe I should get rid of a car or two? -- no way.
I want to remind everyone of the Christmas Dinner to be held on Sunday,
December 2 at the Officers Club on Kirtland Air Force Base. Due to increased
security we all need to meet by 10:30 am at the Wyoming Gate so we can go in
together. Bring two forms of ID and proof of auto insurance and registration.
I realize this is some burden on the members, but remember the food is great
and we get a chance to hear "Mr. Star Trek" perform.
Lastly, Larry Blair has volunteered to talk at December's meeting about the
security arrangements to protect the various public works systems in
Albuquerque from attack. I know I'm interested in hearing about how they plan
to protect things such as our water system and roads. Larry's current position
as head of public works gives him a unique knowledge of those plans. Thanks
Larry for sharing that information with us.
Well, I guess that's all for know. Just one last thing -- I drove my V8 Corvair
again the other day and it was just too much fun now that Wendell Walker sorted
out its linkage problems. The experience can best be summed up by the saying
-- "It was so much fun it must be either immoral, illegal, or fattening." I
vote for number 2.
-- Robert Gold

Hello, Jim!
The exact date is: 7 December 2001. The 60th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. The
performance will be in the school gymnasium at 7:30 PM. Eisenhower is approx
one mile north of the Juan Tabo/Montgomery intersection. Turn right on Camero
at the swimming pool. We do start on time at 7:30.
This will be a very patriotic evening of WWII pieces, marches of Sousa, Bagley,
Alford, Meacheam and other fine arrangements of special music.
Hope to see you all there!

Seven Years Ago in C.N.M.
December 1994
Volume 20 Number 12
The cover was festive with toys, singing bears and a couple of small Corvairs.
There was little or no business at the meeting. Steve and Rita reported on the
auction and pot-luck. The food was delicious and fifty items were auctioned in
sixty minutes, bringing in $270. President Larry told us why he missed the
meeting: he couldn't pass up a hunting trip. The deer eluded him. Larry also
mentioned a high-speed climb up Sedillo Hill during which his Spyder's
temperature gauge soared off the scale, due to a separated harmonic balancer.
Sylvan told about his adventures at the Palm Springs Great Fanbelt Toss and
Swap Meet, an event every Corvair fan should attend at least once. He sold most
of what he took, bought a few things, and made enough to cover expenses. Your
internet monitor (not Dennis) reprinted some political humor to answer the
question, What if politicians campaigned via e-mail? A large notice advised us
to go to the Sirloin Stockade on December 10th for our Christmas Party.
Technical material included the derivation of the word "pitman" as in "pitman
arm" and a wandering FC which it turned out had a major crack in its unit body,
letting the support for the steering gear box literally float! Also, Otto
Mechanic refuted the theory that filling your tires with helium would reduce
weight and thus produce better fuel mileage.
As it was the December issue, an index of the 1994 newsletters was included.
Fourteen Years Ago
Volume 13 Number 12
The December 1987 cover looked like a cut-it-out-yourself jigsaw puzzle. In
case we needed to buy anything, we had $451 to use. The speaker at our
Christmas party was to be the Journal's Jim Arnholtz (now known as Jim
Belshaw). President Reider gave us an overview of tentative activities for
1995. Jerry showed a series of Corvair-related films. Jim reported on the very
interesting Architecture Tour put on by Sylvan. Steve provided answers to the
Football Quiz. Our annual index showed what articles and tech tips were
published during 1987.
Twenty-one Years Ago
Volume 6 Number 12
The December 1980 cover was a photo of our new officers: Sylvan Zuercher, Bill
Reider, Mary Twilley and Robin DeVore. We had $282 in the bank. We planned a
"Ladies' Day" technical session to typical common car problems and what to do
about them. We planned to help out with the national CORSA convention in Denver
in 1981. A tech tip said to use a magnetic drain plug in the oil pan to catch
stray metal particles. An article by the editor argued that low-riders were
superior to hot-rodders. An index for the 1980 newsletter rounded out the
issue.

Hi -- I received this fax from Jeff Kough. He writes:

Dear Mr. Kough:
Your recent letter regarding the cylinder head temperature gauge for the 1966
Corvair Corsa 164 CID 140 hp engine has been directed to us for reply.
The normal engine operating temperature, in 70 degrees F to 80 degrees F
ambient, is around 400 degrees F. The engine temperature warning light is
calibrated to light up at 460 degrees F plus/minus 10 degrees. A periodic check
of this indicator as explained in the Owner's Manual is important. Note that
the temperature indicator also serves as the oil pressure indicator therefore,
the light can come on for four reasons: oil pressure problem, temperature
problem, combination pressure/temperature problem, or an indicator/sensor
malfunction.
We thank you for writing to Chevrolet.
Sincerely,
John Jarosh

TO ALL: The above paragraph is one of the best statements I have seen on VV in
a while. The stock linkage on our cars was fairly loose when the cars were new,
the years of wear have only served to make it worse.
Nothing is worse than trying to synch the carbs when they won't open evenly
time after time.

Another year of Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter is done. We did a lot this year
and enjoyed most of it. We have a lot to do next year: the Albuquerque Museum
Car Show, the Tri-State at Grand Junction, the CORSA Convention at Flagstaff,
the NMCCC Picnic, the Swap Meet, maybe another campout, another Aspencade,
another Christmas party, and who knows what else. What do you want to do? Come
to the meetings, attend a board meeting or two, call up your officers, write
letters to the editor. The Club belongs to all of us. Let's make 2002 a year to
look back on with fond memories.
Thanks to Hurley Wilvert for his Driver's Seat articles, Robert Gold for all
those good programs, Chuck Vertrees for the minutes, Wendell Walker for updates
on dues paid, Mark Martinek for the Car Council meeting notes, Ollie Scheflow
for the fun Route 66 cleanups, Sylvan Zuercher for riding herd on all those
peksy newsletter pages and the member list, Debbie Deck for all those trips to
the Post Office, and Bill Reider for printing up the last couple of pages of
this issue.
