Hope all is well with you. We sure missed not going to the Tri-State this year but it was just too far for a weekend trip. Plan on attending in 2003 at Raton. Thought you might enjoy seeing my son Jordan's '67. We painted it last spring and he entered it as a 4-H project, taking the Grand Champion ribbon at our county fair. It has always been a local car essentially rust-free. I will begin work on my Yenko again as soon as fall work is done. All that is left is the interior. Hope to drive it to Raton. See you - tell everybody hello. thanks -- Lee Olsen == OCTOBER MEETING NOTES Jim Pittman The meeting was called to order at 7:32 PM by vice-president Larry Blair. Robert Gold was out of town. Chuck Vertrees was also on other business, so your editor took notes. Larry said the meeting would be busy so haste was required. Members Richard and Gayle Finch were recognized; they had come up from Tularosa (250 miles) with a trunk full of Corvair parts. Tarmo was asked how far he came and said it was only 65 miles, so he lost the distance competition this month. Minutes of the September meeting were approved as published. Wendell Walker reported we had $702.37 in the Wells Fargo checking account and $4,798.65 in the GMAC account for a total of $5,501.02. Anne Mae Gold reminded us that the CNM Ladies planned to gather at the Golds' residence on October 12th (last weekend of the balloon fiesta) for a Pampered Chef event and all were welcome. She also reminded us of the Pot Luck and White Elephant Auction at 6:00 PM on Saturday November 2nd at House of Covers, 115 Richmond NE. And, contrary to previous reports, on Saturday November Saturday 9th the CNM Ladies will meet at Ruth Boydston's house. Bill Reider of the Tri-State Committee reported that the committee went to Raton last month. Choice of motel for the event has been changed to Microtel in Raton with rooms available at about $40-$60 per night. The banquet is planned for Demetrio's which can seat 150 people. Jerry asked, do they have a PA system? Photos of the motel were circulated. Dates will be May 30 and 31, 2003. The committee will make at least one more trip to Raton before the event. The State Fair Car Show was a big success with great weather and the good availability of ladders for sale (assume this to be an inside joke) and Doug Morgan reportedly bought a ladder this year. Steve Gongora has had several photos from the State Fair on CNM's web site for several days now. If you have internet access, check them out. NEW BUSINESS: Larry said that during the State Fair someone wanted to buy an early coupe, giving telephone numbers 238-9737 (work) and 275-3381 (home) so call these numbers if you have an early coupe to sell. Richard Finch reported that a man in Tularosa has five Corvairs for sale - wants $500 for all five - most of them are in driveable condition - contact Richard if interested - 505-667-1876 or e-mail finchbird AT juno DOT com. Larry said during the State Fair we learned of an offer by Southwest Sandia Motorspeedway for car clubs to come out and run some laps behind a pace car. The cost would be $25 and you'd have to follow the pace car; we don't know how many laps would be allowed or whether you'd be allowed to pass the pace car should your car possess the moxie to do so. Also, it was proposed that the Car Council could have a car show and swap meet out there? The Speedway is apparently trying to promote some activity out there. Mark Martinek pointed out that a problem is lack of shade there. Car Council Report - Jerry Goffe. The President of NMCCC, Ken Halverson, quit the NMCCC and the rest of the group muddled on. Leva Freed announced a dinner in November. There was more discussion of Southwest Sandia Motorspeedway events - car show - free for NMCCC clubs - parking on the north and south sides of the track. This will be October 12-13-14, 2003. Ronald Mcdonald House will get the funds. NMCCC must decide by next Wednesday's meeting. Jerry recommends we take a vote. Should we try to stay in los Lunas for next year's car show -- or -- work with the university -- or -- go to Southwest Sandia Motorspeedway? Ronald Mcdonald House will be doing five major events next year and this will be one of them, so it's a big deal. What the swap meet itself makes will stay with NMCCC and Mcdonalds will get the entry fees. Will they charge the people who come to the swap meet to buy? Don't know. Jerry asked, should CNM recommend to go with this to the NMCCC? No objection was heard. Larry reported that the Packard club planned to go to Gran Quivera - that's almost to Claunch - on Sunday, October 20th; they will leave at 9:00 AM from Tramway & Central SE. (For new folks: the reference to "Claunch" is another inside joke - ask someone about it.) On Saturday, October 26th there will be a Lobo tailgating party - put on by one of the Corvette clubs. Going back to next year's swap meet - it will be September 26-27 2003, 7:00 to 4:00 and a car show will be on September 28th. Spaces will rent for $25 to $30 - that money goes to NMCCC. Last weekend's swap meet was attended by a few CNM members. November 9th - there will be a Veterans' Day car show. Ask for people to come to the Senior Center October 5th in the afternoon. Where is the Senior Center? I did not get that. A newsletter from the Wheels Museum was available. A brochure on the Southwest Sandia Motorspeedway drive around behind pace car on October 12-13 was available. Larry asked Tarmo if there were plans or suggestions for an Aspencade? Tarmo said we had discussed several possible events including going to Las Golondrinas where there is a Living Museum opportunity this weekend including stomping grapes - gristmill - things at work. Mark Domzalski pointed out that aspen colors may be at their peak this weekend and MAYBE next weekend; they are changing fast and they are early this year. After some discussion it appeared there was zero interest in an organized Aspencade this year. Tarmo therefore invited everyone to make their own private Aspencade. Anne Mae reported that Ollie said this weekend was to be the Route 66 cleanup but this Saturday was out - so, when do we want to do it? Mark Domzalski suggested we do it on Saturday November 2nd, the same day as the Pot Luck and White Elephant Auction. But those who expressed an interest preferred October 19th, so that recommendation will go back to Ollie. Moving on, Larry said it had been suggested that we not have a December meeting, as we would be having our Christmas party just before meeting time anyway. We can think about it. Carl Johnson asked, how could one get a surety bond to get insurance? Wendell suggested Bob Hunter at about $100 and Steve suggested Stagney Insurance Agency. Larry said it was time for election of officers. Were there more nominations? No. Jerry moved and it was approved that we accept the slate of officers by acclimation. There were two candidates for vice president: Larry Blair and Joel Nash; Larry and Joel stepped outside and Sylvan polled the rest of the members; by a narrow margin Joel was elected vice president. Actually, according to Del, the vote was a tie, but we'd need to spend the next month counting the chad vote. A meeting of the Supreme Court was quickly called into session; voting irregularities were outlined; money, promises and political favors changed hands; and the court declared Joel the winner. No, I made that up; such a thing could not happen in Real Life. Congratulations to Joel! There was a motion to adjourn but Jerry brought up the topic of having to be able to communicate to all the cars at NMCCC events - how about an FM transmitter? But the problem is - that's one-way communication. Jerry solved the problem by buying ten two-way radios - range 5 miles - they will be available at NMCCC events. The meeting adjourned at 8:17 PM. Sylvan introduced our speaker Sy Feldman who gave a 45 minute slide and talk presentation relating his experiences as an American pilot flying for the RAF during WWII. Much of his presentation was about the V-1 flying bomb attacks on London and efforts to thwart them. We learned that there was a lot more to flying for the RAF than scrambling Spitfires to shoot down Heinkels and Messerschmidts. The presentation was of great interest to the members and elicited a number of questions. == OCTOBER BOARD MEETING Jim Pittman Chuck was not present and Jim was late, so without an official scribe we don't really know what happened from 5:00 to about 5:30 PM. Possibly the minutes of last month's meeting were approved as published. Robert Gold ran the meeting. Our new VP Joel Nash was welcomed. Also present were Steve Gongora, Sylvan Zuercher, Wendell Walker, Mark Martinek, Jim Pittman and Jerry Goffe. Treasurer's report: $757.79 checking and $4798.65 GMAC for a total of $5556.44. Wendell provided a financial report for the past year. Anyone interested in where our funds come from and where they go may want to have a look at this document. Robert mentioned, as "Corvair" news, that he had been looking for a windshield for a Lakewood, and found a relatively inexpensive one in Iowa or possibly Indiana or another Midwestern location. Lakewood windshields are NOT the same as those for other early models and presumably are rarer and more costly. Robert had printed a tentative schedule of suggested events for 2003 for our discussion. The board approved the $200 requested by Bill Reider for the Tri-State hospitality room. Dates for the Tri-State will be May 30 - June 1, 2003. Oct 19 at 9:00 AM will be the Route 66 Clean-up, organized by Ollie Scheflow. Nov 2 from 10:00 to 2:30 PM will be Bill Reider's home swap meet. Nov 2 at 6:00 PM will be CNM's pot luck and auction at House of Covers. Nov 8-10 the Great Fan Belt Toss and Swap Meet - Palm Springs, California. Dec 1 at 11:00 AM Christmas dinner at KAFB Officers' Club. Note: there will be no Meissner Award at the Christmas dinner this year! It was moved and seconded and the Board decided, per the Award Committee's recommendation, to move this award to the March club birthday party. This projected annual event needs to be planned and scheduled. We need a committee to determine the time, place and agenda. Robert will ask for volunteers at the November meeting. Now's your chance to get in on the ground floor to plan what could become a major CNM event. Ollie, Rita and Dennis are the committee to select the Meissner Award recipient and they intend be ready with the award in time for the birthday party. One suggestion for the March birthday party was a formal installation of officers and recognition of new members. Others thought this should be part of the annual Christmas party. What do you think? Will members be more likely to attend the Christmas party or a March birthday party, or both? If we want to do it at Christmas someone needs to get busy planning what to do. Wendell suggested awarding plaques to those who do extraordinary work during the year. Robert suggested awards for outgoing officers. Other ideas would be welcome. We discussed other events we might have during 2003, such as a garage tour, a trip to Trinity Site or the Very Large Array radio telescope, a campout. If you have other ideas, let someone know. Mark Martinek reported on the special NMCCC meeting - his written report was already available on this web page. Does the Car Council intend to work with the city and the Albuquerque Museum to have a car show in Albuquerque next year? Will they go back to Los Lunas? Robert repeated that it was a great event this year. Los Lunas definitely wants us back. Several mentioned the high level of support for the recent car show, and Steve pointed out that there are many car enthusiasts in the Los Lunas - Belen area and they always support automotive events. The crux of the meeting was the proposed South West Motor Sports event (events?) with Ronald McDonald and the Coca-Cola corporation. This is potentially a major development with national advertising, and there were many pros and cons for the Car Council to get involved. After much discussion of these pros and cons, some discussion on whether it is to CNM's benefit to continue to have anything to do with the Car Council, much discussion about exactly what the Car Council is supposed to be for anyway, we finally decided to adjourn the board meeting. == FROM THE DRIVERS SEAT Robert Gold Sylvan Zuercher... I forgot to thank Sylvan for his work as membership committee chairman in my last newsletter column. That's sort of like not thanking George Washington for founding the USA! It was Sylvan who persuaded me to run for the position of Vice-President and the rest is history. It is Sylvan who is the life blood of CNM... he's the one who brings in new members and keeps this organization going. I can't imagine not looking up at our monthly meetings and calling on Sylvan to introduce the next new member or potential member. If you're a Corvair owner in New Mexico Sylvan will find you for CNM. Thanks Sylvan. It's now time to thank those of you who participated in the State Fair Car Show. We had 17 Corvairs entered this year - a car show record. The entries were the most diverse we've ever had - this included the Sullivan's Ultra Van. I have the breakdown of the awards in a separate article of this newsletter. There were many memorable cars, but I think Carl and Geoff Johnson's collective entries garnered the most ribbons and Carl's van was entered by default - it was there to tow that unregistered memorable early model four door! I think the honorary award for the most improved entry needs to go to Del Patten. He went from entering a Greenbrier that dominated the "Farthest from 100 point car" category to a late model hardtop that could best be described as a thing of purple beauty. This should serve as an example to all of the membership that with a lot of work and imagination you can create a car of unique beauty. I want to thank Dave Huntoon and my friend Ted Young for driving two of the Gold's fleet to the show. To paraphrase a popular phrase - so many cars and so few drivers! Again thanks to all of you who entered. Let's see, what else do I need to mention here. I've got it! - There's the little topic of the CNM elections that took place at the last meeting. To show that I was good to my word I did run again for President. And to insure I wouldn't back out I didn't show up to the meeting. I want say it did make me feel good that you all were willing to put up with me for another year. Many thanks to Larry Blair for running the meeting and congratulations to our new group of officers for 2003. There are plans in the works to have a more formal installation of officers at the Christmas Party, so circle Sunday, December 1 on your calendars. I got the chance to participate in the last Route 66 cleanup of 2002. As usual, Ollie Scheflow did a fine job of organizing the effort. He even went so far as to mark sure the weather was nice even though there had been rain in the area the day before. Turnout was very good, so after about 1 1/2 hours we were free to go home. I use that terminology because I'm sure some of the folks driving by thought that we were from the local lockup and were working off our sentences. One highlight of the morning was the fact that a group of non-CNM folks was picking up trash just west of our mile. It's nice to see others being as environmentally supportive as our group. Remember that the next pickup is scheduled for the Saturday after our meeting in March. Speaking of scheduled events, don't forget the November auction and potluck that will be held at House of Covers on Saturday, November 2, at 6:00 pm. I'm sure that anyone who attended the event last year will agree that we had a heck of time. I'm still amazed at the wonderful $6 fax bargain I got. In addition to the good times, money raised by the auction will go into the dwindling CNM treasury. I must say here for the record there is no truth to the rumor that Wendell Walker purchased leather seats for his 'Cuda in an amount equal to the decrease in the club treasury last year. Hey, Wendell I need some interior work on my Corsa! Just kidding.... I'd like to ask the CNM members to let Joel Nash your ideas for meeting presentations for the coming year. I'm sure that there are those of you who know someone who would make an interesting talk at a meeting. If not, you'll have to content yourself with the banter between Jerry Goffe and Del Patten or with Mark Martinek's riveting Car Council saga reports. Really, please give Joel a hand in his efforts to provide us with programs. I guess that's it for my ramblings this month. Again thank you all for the confidence you showed in me. I hope to make this year even better than the good times we had last year. -Robert Gold == State Fair Car Show Robert Gold The wind was blowing really, really hard and it was really, really cold when the intrepid members of CNM queued up in the Furrs' parking lot for the State Fair Car Show. That Sunday morning on September 22 was so cold.... (you can make up your own joke here). Anyway, I was feeling pretty low about the whole experience when out of the gale came Larry Blair in his 64 Convertible. Larry, ever the warrior, had his top down and his American flags flying! He parked with a big smile on his face and it was at that point I decided that life was wonderful and the fact that 17 cars had collected in that parking lot for the show was good enough to overcome that lousy weather. At 7:30 sharp we lined up and entered the fairgrounds. Another year of the State Fair Car Show and another year everyone got in free. Life is truly wonderful. Well, by 10 o'clock the weather had changed dramatically for the better and we had one of the nicest days ever at the fair. As I mentioned, we had 17 entries, more than any Fair Show I had organized. What can I say, the membership support of this event is why I look forward to the show every year. Another great feature of the show was that we had the most diverse group of Corvairs I have ever seen. Sure you can go to the National Convention and see some really nice cars. Did I say SOME really nice cars. How 'bout a lot of really nice cars. What we had at our show were all kinds of cars. Old ones, newer ones, cars, truck, vans, an Ultravan, and something the National Convention could never dream of-- some really dog tired, crummy, and beatup Corvairs. In fact we had one car that if it had been driven in on it's own power (Carl Johnson towed it) the State Police would have descended on it like flies on XXXXX (you enter your own appropriate word). These ugly ducklings made the nicer cars look like concours winners. So I would like to thank the Johnsons for their significant contributions to the success of the show. Another memorable aspect of the show was the major turnaround staged by Del Patten. This is the Del Patten who in earlier years was the odds on favorite to win the "Farthest From 100 Point Car" award. This comeback kid entered the 2002 show with his "Plum Crazy" 66 Monza supercar. I can't really do it justice by describing it here-- you need to look at it in person. I also want to mention how great it was to have Ruth Boydston out there with her 63 Monza. The Boydston name is once again synonymous with quality Corvairs. Lastly, I want to thank my kids, Javi and Sara for not driving their parents crazy at the fair. Back to show events - As I promised in addition to the traditional best of show awards, we awarded 38 ribbons for a variety of reasons to the cars entered. When I say variety of reasons, I mean some good, many bad, and some just for the heck of it. Every vehicle at the show sported at least one ribbon (yes even John Wiker got some well deserved ribbons). Since there was such a mass of ribbons in order to save space I'm not going to list the individual winners here, better for me to list the Best of Show winners and then to list all the people who entered since they were all winners: 1. Doug Morgan 1965 Corsa One last thing before I end, I want to thank the Classic Chevy Club, who shared the Fairgrounds with us, for giving every Corvair a dash plaque to commemorate the show. It is this type of inter-car club kindness that should serve as an example to all the car clubs in town. Again many thanks. I guess that's it for this year. That's when we'll have the next best Fair Car Show ever! -- Robert Gold == Seven Years Ago - November 1995 - Volume 21 - Number 11 Our new president, Mark Domzalski, shared the cover with a sketch of a Rampside. President Blair ran the October meeting. We had $913 in the bank, with $328 earmarked for the convention. A guest was Mr Kron who had a 1964 Monza with 140 for sale. Bill Reider said the September swap meet was a success Coming up was the third annual National Atomic Museum car show. Wendell planned to refurbish the 1965 coupe that LeRoy donated for the convention raffle prize and a list of needed parts was circulated. Some members planned to attend a concert by the Marine Corps Band. A potluck and auction event was planned for November. Another potluck was planned when a contingent from CORSA would be here to help with convention planning. Mark Ellis was doing a survey of all owners of 1969 Corvairs. Our election was held and the new officers were President Mark Domzalski, VP Terry, Price, Secretary Chuck Vertrees and Treasurer Will Davis. After the usual congratulations and heckling, Larry gave an informative talk on gas heaters. Getting off to a fast presidential start, Mark recognized several key CNM members for their contributions past, present and future and pledged to do his best to lead CNM through the next year in a productive and fun way. We can all attest that Mark kept his promise. Chuck Vertrees reported on a successful photo rally - he took full credit for the marvelous weather - and the winners were Wendy and Ilva, closely followed by Steve and Rita and Debbie & Dennis. This photo rally was important because it was practice for a rally for the convention! Debbie reported on convention committee activities and Chuck and Debbie provided an article on the convention to be published soon in CORSA Communique. Tech tips discussed fixing leaking convertible tops with saran wrap and RTV, changing oil before storing a car, an idea for a drive train removal dolly, and the phlogiston theory of electronics. Fourteen Years Ago - November 1988 - Volume 14 - Number 11 The cover showed another Mark Morgan fantasy race car. We met "under the stars" at Ed Black's. The bank was holding $690 for us. Among the four guests at our meeting was "Windle" Walker. Elections: Bill Hector, Tom Martin, Chuck Vertrees and Brian Zolna were elected. We planned a trip to Petroglyph Park and the Natural History museum. Tom Martin previewed the Christmas party at the County Line restaurant. Tarmo reported on a memorable Aspencade to NolaEspa, Dixon, Ojo Sarco, Las Truchas and Chimayo, ending up at Rancho de Chimayo for an excellent lunch. The fall colors and weather conditions were excellent. Finally, a tech tip told why NOT to use silicon brake fluid in a street-driven car. Twenty-one Years Ago - November 1981 - Volume 7 Number 11 The cover showed Francis and Sylvan with a Rampside full of firewood. We visited the Boydstons at their cabin in the Pecos. A new member was Dan Moss. Officers elected were Bill Reider, George Morin, Robin DeVore and Mary Twilley. Doug Crandall spoke to us on zoning laws as they affected members working on cars at their homes. Bob Nugent showed slides from the April econo-run. Dick Twilley showed us rebuilt carburetors with nylon or steel sleeves. It was announced that Ralph Nader was to speak in Albuquerque in October. Sylvan's Dummy of the Month column warned about the ease of crossing spark plug wires and the importance of getting them uncrossed. Robin DeVore planned to bring a CO monitor to our next meeting to test members' heaters for carbon monoxide leakage into the passenger compartment through the heater. Thank you to those who came to the Pampered Chef party and to those who placed orders! November will be a busy month for us. We'll start off the month with the Pot Luck and Auction at the House of Covers. Bring food enough to share, plates and utensils and an "unwanted" piece of machinery, car part, household item, art, whatever. Please bring all your small bills and/or a checkbook. Nothing goes for very much and we don't have change to start off. This event will be on Nov. 2 at 6:00 pm. Come one, come all and bring friends! The CNM ladies will be meeting the second Saturday of November, the 9th, at Ruth Boydston's home. The meeting place has changed, it will not be at the Goff's home, it will be at Ruth's home. Time: 1pm-4pm. In December we will not meet, although a couple of us are waiting for word when Elizabeth needs help with the gingerbread guys... So Elizabeth, give us a call and we'll come tooling out to help! January is open, if anyone wants to host us in 2003. February we'll meet at Ruth's home again to eat her famous white cake as a valentine treat! Hope to see all your gorgeous faces in all the right places! (Even if you all did re-elect my husband!) -- AM Christmas Corvair Brunch -by- Rita Gongora We are getting ready early this year: the Christmas Corvair Brunch is on track! It will be on Sunday December 1, 2002 at 11:00 AM at the Kirtland AFB Officers' Club, the same location as last year. It will be okay if you need to arrive after 12:00 noon. When you go to the Wyoming gate to KAFB be sure to have your driver's license, proof of vehicle insurance and the vehicle registration. For more information, call Rita at 292-5570 or 256-0551. == NMCCC REPORT - 23 Oct 2002 Mark Martinek Jim Clements called the meeting to order at 7:37 PM. Jim gave a short overview of the council by-laws. The council is committed to a museum car show on 18 May 2003. There is a possibility that a second show, date unknown, will be held in Los Lunas. The secretary reported on the meeting of South Western Motor Sports (SWMS), Coca-Cola and Ronald McDonald. They will hold a three-day car show, auction and swap meet with or without the cooperation of the council. They are offering the council the opportunity to run the swap meet. Of the space fee, $5.00 would be paid to the Ronald McDonald foundation. SWMS wants to collect all fees and then deduct $5.00 per space and pay the council. There may be a $1.00 per car parking fee or possibly $1.00 per person entrance fee. It was suggested that the council might donate up to $10,000.00 to the Wheels Museum in an attempt to secure a future meeting space. After much discussion the suggestion was put off until a later time, closer to the completion of the museum. After much spirited discussion it was moved that the council accept the SWMS-Coke-McDonald offer with the provision that the council could withdraw if obvious problems developed in finalizing the cooperation contract. The motion was seconded and after more spirited discussion a roll call voice vote was taken. Of the 15 eligible voters 10 voted for, 4 voted against and 1 abstained. A Car Show Committee and a Swap Meet committee were formed to organize and coordinate the two events. The membership of the two committees was almost the same. Tom Willers reported on the Packard Chimayo tour. There were 32 vehicles and the tour was made with no breakdowns. A good time was had by all. The members were reminded of the Veteran's Day Car Show in T or C. Clubs are encouraged to participate. The Festival of the Cranes tour will be on Saturday, 23 November. All clubs are encouraged to attend. Howard Zorn reported that there was $8586.67 in the checking account and $11,124.13 in CDs. The council took in over $2,800.00 from the swap meet and spent only $811.26 to organize, advertise and conduct it. The proposed dragstrip at Rio Puerco was mentioned. Some clubs were displeased that more council members did not show up for the open house. It was suggested that the council do more to encourage the younger drag strip-oriented clubs to join the council and participate in council events. This was not widely or cheerfully received. The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 P.M. Steve Gongora 256-0551 * * * * * CNM ADS ARE FREE TO CNM MEMBERS, $5.00 TO NON-CNM MEMBERS * * * * * == ROUTE 66 CLEANUP Oliver Scheflow The club held its third and last cleanup for the year on Saturday October 12th. I arrived at our usual parking area just east of Central and Tramway at about 7:45 AM. Soon Kevin and Leslie Sullivan arrived to help me wait. Soon Gordon Johnson arrived. We waited until about 8:30 and Gordon and I decided to go get coffee -- Gordon got breakfast. We arrived back at the parking area at about 9:00 and found we had a crew of nine, eager to go out and start cleaning. The weather forecast for Thursday and Friday predicted rain and cold, but on Saturday morning we were very fortunate to have a dry, sunny and mild day. The cleanup went very well as there was not a lot of trash. Along with the usual beer bottles and cans and fast food wrappings we found two bicycle inner tubes, a bicycle tire, a live 12-gauge shell and a wooden cut-out skeleton. We hoped the loss of the wooden skeleton would not put a crimp in someone's Halloween party. Participating at the cleanup were: Robert Gold, Steve Gongora, David Huntoon, Gordon Johnson, Mark Martinek, Bill Reider, Kevin Sullivan, Leslie Sullivan and myself, Ollie Scheflow. Many thanks to the current cleanup members and to those who have participated in earlier cleanups during the year. I look forward to seeing you at the three cleanups next year. -- Ollie == OUR OWN PRIVATE ASPENCADE Jim Pittman Tarmo and I talked about the 2002 Aspencade and thought up several possibilities: make another trip to the Salman Ranch near Mora; take the train from Santa Fe to Lamy; go to La Cienega and see the old colonial way of life at Las Golondrinas; meet in Santa Fe to have lunch and go to one of the museums or just tour around Santa Fe and check out the art galleries on Canyon Road. But at the meeting when we discussed these options there was a total lack of interest. We all just have too many other things to do! Well, Saturday October 5th rolled around and the weather was nice and Heula and I decided to head for the hills... to the Santa Fe Ski Area, to be exact. We packed a few munchies and a thermos of coffee and binoculars and cameras and stuffed them and ourselves into the nooks and crannies of the Miata. We headed east on old Route 66 and then north via Tijeras, Cedar Crest, Golden, Madrid and Cerrillos to Santa Fe. It was warm enough to go topless and we could see everything from the toy car as we spun effortlessly up hills and around curves. Others had the same idea, but the traffic was pretty light. The aspens were a little beyond their prime, perhaps, but there were plenty of nice scenes and colorful fall foliage left to admire. We had a great day! Next year maybe we can plan ahead and have a real club aspencade. But this year's was just fine for us. =end=
