(Picture of $29.95 Corsa Digital Compass) == November Meeting Minutes by Chuck Vertrees President Robert Gold called the meeting to order on 11/6/02 at 19:30 at Galles Chevrolet. All officers were present. It was predicted that the turnout would be rather small because so many members were on their way to Palm Springs, but we finally ended up with twenty members and two guests present. The two guests and prospective members were Roger Pape (pronounced poppy) who has three convertibles which need some work and a Corvair powered dune buggy, and Eddie Stern who has a 1964 convertible which he has just gotten to run. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the last newsletter. Part-time secretary Jim Pittman asked if this made the things he had written in the October minutes really true. He was pleased when told that this did make them true. (I wonder why?) Wendell Walker reported that CNM had $981.10 in the checking account and $4,798.65 in the GMAC Account for a total of $5,779.75. He was quite pleased with the amount in the checking account since we had made $219.25 at the November 2nd Potluck and auction. Robert Gold reported on a pleasant experience with the New Mexico MVD. While at the Route 66 trash pickup, he noticed Mark Martinek's "Horseless Carriage" license plates and decided to get some for some of his cars. After several calls he found out that they could only be gotten at the head MVD in Santa Fe. Since he was going to Santa Fe on other business he decided to apply in person. (By mail the MVD wanted quite a bit of paper including the title to the vehicle.) The people at the MVD in Santa Fe were very pleasant and helped him get the applications all filled out and turned in. The person who would approve this was not in the office but they said they would get it right on her desk. This was on a Friday! Robert received his plates on the following Tuesday in the mail. The response time was remarkable! The cost is $5.00 for 5 years. There are some restrictions as to what the car can be used for. Robert also said that the MVD office in Santa Fe has a wall display of all of the various plates that can be issued in New Mexico. It would be worth your time to stop in and see it if you are near. On the same subject, the MVD office in Winrock has been closed and moved to the SE (?) corner of Menaul and Juan Tabo. Robert also reported that he really enjoyed the Potluck and auction, specially the bag or box of eyeballs he got. I was still on my way back from the Pacific so this is an inside item to those of us who were not there. Check with Robert and find out. There was no Car Council report. You can probably get it on line. Mark Domzalski was asked if he had anything to report from CORSA and replied, "I am now out of the loop and loving it." He said that after Palm Springs he would probably have something to report. Mark Domzalski reported that past member Dave Patten had passed away in early October. He will be interred at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. The details are not known and we will have to contact Dell. Ideas for talks after the formal meeting are needed. This is Joel's job but he can sure use all members' assistance. A sheet was circulated for any ideas. If you know the contact person that goes with the idea, include it. Sally Johnson announced that she has her new Corvair with her. It's a 1961 white sedan. All members should check it out after the meeting. Bill Reider reminded the membership that there is a competition for a patch design for the Tri-State meet. The entries are due by the December meeting. Dave Huntoon asked if you could hide your initials in the design and was told yes if they were not too obvious. I don't know what Dave has in mind. The big item of the evening was the proposed schedule of activities for 2003. CNM makes a point of trying to have at least one outside activity every month. We try to make it something that will interest all the members and their families. Robert had prepared a list of possible activities and this was passed out to those present. JANUARY was on the list for a Photo Tour. The question was what is this? Jerry Goffe suggested a tour of Bosque del Apache where he is a docent. After a little discussion this seemed like a great idea. Jerry will reserve the bus or busses, depending on how many want to go. At the last tour we brought guests and this will be suggested again. Bring your cameras and we will plan on lunch someplace after the tour. Date will be January 18th. FEBRUARY was on the list as our usual garage tour with LeRoy Rogers setting it up. This is a little late for LeRoy to do it but Mark Domzalski will see him this week in Palm Springs and see what can be done. MARCH looks like a pretty full month. The 8th is our first cleanup of Route 66 for 2003. Then the 9th is the CNM Birthday Party. This will become an annual affair. It was decided to combine it with our Progressive Dinner. Salad/soup at Ruth Boydston's, dinner at the Domzalskis' and desert at Wendell Walker's. Fill your gas talks before you start, and maybe we could consider car pooling in the interest of parking. Also in March Robert had another possible Photo Tour. Since I had experience doing the rally for our international convention, I was volunteered for this. I haven't decided just what kind of a tour it will be in spite of some very interesting suggestions from Jerry Goffe, such as going to car washes around town and having to figure out which bay the picture was taken from. I told him that the participants would have to figure out what time of day the pictures were taken by the angle of the shadows when given the date the picture was taken. Because of these uncertainties, a date has not been selected. APRIL will be a trip to the Trinity Site. This is only available twice a year. It will be the first Saturday of the month, which is the 5th. There is a limit to the number of cars which will be admitted. It was suggested that those going would meet at the Bosque and a bus be arranged to take us as a group. Mark and Jerry will work on this. MAY has two happenings. The Albuquerque Museum NMCCC car show is scheduled for 5/18/03. And the Tri-State will be in Raton on May 30th and 31st. JUNE will be the annual campout at the Ruth Boydston cabin in the Pecos with the overflow going to the Golds' "Estate" nearby. This will be the weekend of the 14th and 15th. Suggestions for the second half of the year will be discussed at a later meeting. We adjourned at 19:30. -- Chuck == NOVEMBER BOARD MEETING by Chuck Vertrees Vice-President Joel Nash called the November board meeting to order at 17:30 on 11/20/02 at House of Covers. Present were Joel Nash, Chuck Vertrees, Steve Gongora, Sylvan Zuercher, Wendell Walker and Jim Pittman. The minutes of the last board meeting were accepted as printed in the newsletter. There was no treasurer's report. The first topic of discussion was the annual Christmas dinner on December 1st. Since there will not be another regular meeting before the dinner we need to get information out to all CNM members and their families about the details. They are pretty much covered in the last newsletter, but the board thought they should be repeated. Steve will enter all the information about getting into the base on the CNM web site. Jim will get a current membership list with phone numbers to Steve who will then set up a calling tree, Hopefully this newsletter will also arrive before the 1st of December. Wendell gave the chapter checkbook to Steve so that payment can be made with Bob Gold signing the check. I don't know what the charge will be, but everyone bring money, preferably change, to pay for your Brunch. It has always been very reasonable for what is available. Nobody should leave hungry. Just to duplicate some information that will be found elsewhere, to get in you will need a picture identification, a drivers license or other item, a registration for the car and proof of auto insurance. There were quite a few CNM members who went to the Palm Springs meeting. Joel said that there were several people who commented to him about CNM, and what a good club we have. One of the things mentioned was that we seem to have activities all the time, and that there does not seem to be any dissention in the club. It was mentioned that Saint George will have their spring meeting in Mesquite, Nevada next year. It is quite close to Saint George, just down through the Virgin River canyon and a few miles across the border into Nevada. There are at least two casinos there so rooms should be pretty cheap. No more details yet. Two deaths were mentioned. As those at the last meeting found out, former member Dave Patten died in California after a long illness. Dell told me last night that he will be interred in the National Cemetery at Santa Fe in January. He and Kim are also planning a get together at their house. Ross Ward, creator of Tinkertown, recently died. He was the father of CNM member Jason Ward. He is unable to make most of the meetings because of his work schedule. He has a nice 1964 Corvair, Sylvan tells me. The meeting was adjourned at 18:15. == From the Driver's Seat Robert Gold I still can't get that goofy smile off my face! Why the smile you might ask? That's the smile that results when I think about the November Pot Luck/Auction that the club just had. For those of you who missed it, we had everything in the world up for auction. Hurley Wilvert showed up with a fender and some carbs and he left with the buy of the evening, a Lazyboy lounger. And just like the guy says on TV -- I can't mention the price because the price he paid was way way too low. We also had things like a color TV, a genuine leather handbag, a Mary Kay mug, and my favorite (that's because I bought it), a bowl full of eyeballs, that's definitely the gift that keeps on giving. Another nice thought was that I got to show off the CNM membership to two good friends of mine, Leslie and Dustin Hall who were just in from North Carolina on a visit to attend a wedding. They had just bought an early model convertible, never mind it that it is now being repaired. I know for sure they'll be returning to Charlotte knowing that we have quite a wonderful group here. So thanks to everybody who made the event such a success. We raised over $200 for the club treasury. Oh yes, and special thanks to Rita and Steve Gongora for the use of their building for the festivities and for the CNM Ladies for coordinating the event. Just when I thought the Johnson family saga couldn't get any better, who should show up with Geoff at the last meeting? His sister Sally and her early model treasure. Thanks Sally for showing off your car and bringing such enthusiasm to the meeting. I'm wondering how many more of the Johnson clan are out there with Corvairs. If we round up enough of them we could change the name of the club to Corvairs of New Mexico, featuring the Johnsons. I think they should serve as a challenge to the other members to encourage other family members to obtain a Corvair and come to our events. I wonder if it isn't too late for me to change my name to Johnson so I can get into the swing of things? Go Carl, Geoff and Sally! Thinking about our November meeting, we made very good progress in planning events for the upcoming months. Remember that we'll be having the Christmas Dinner on December 1. We're planning on taking that occasion to formally thank the outgoing CNM officers and induct the new ones. January will see the club returning to the Bosque del Apache with Jerry Geoff as tour guide. February will be the garage tour if Mark Domzalski is successful in asking Leroy Rogers for his leadership. In coming months we'll see where the atom bomb was exploded in New Mexico, have a wonderful time visiting Ruth Boydston at her mountain hideaway, try to follow Chuck Vertrees' hints on a photo car rally, eat lots of good food at the progressive dinner and travel up to Raton for our Tri-state get together. Not bad, not bad at all.... Please pay attention to the event calendar and the various articles that will be in the club newsletter for the particulars of each event. I also want to thank you for your suggestions for Joel Nash concerning possible meeting presentations. One intriguing idea concerned a talk by Steve Gongora on non-traditional techniques for entering a car. I'm sure that is one topic that has never been covered by a meeting talk. So I look forward to seeing what Joel comes up with. One more thing that came up at the November meeting was a request by Bill Reider for a design for a patch for the upcoming Tri-state. I would encourage the members to think up a proper reward for the best entry. Perhaps a free genuine CNM license plate or maybe a new Corvette.... scale model. Lastly, I want to end this column with a positive thought. As I mentioned at the last meeting, I had a good experience with the Motor Vehicle Division. I was looking to obtain Horseless Carriage plates for two of my fleet. Being a novice at that I proceeded to call a number of people at MVD to get the low down on what I had to do. And can you imagine? -- They gave me courteous and friendly advice and the advice was accurate. What it comes down to is that you need to pull together documentation about the car title and insurance, and fill out an application, send all this stuff to Santa Fe and by return mail you get a license plate good for 5 years at a really low cost. The only drawback is there is a requirement that the car be in original condition or be in the process of being restored to original condition. That eliminated my slightly modified 1966 Corsa powered by a big block Olds V8. I guess two out of three cars is ok. I hope this good experience carries over to my future contacts with MVD -- hope springs eternal. And finally... after months of waiting I'm happy to report Anne Mae Gold's Lakewood now has a brand new windshield. This was after two attempts to ship one from the Iowa Glass Company. The Glass Emporium here in town did a nice installation job. So everybody take a look when we show up at the next meeting. Good things come to those who wait... sometimes! Well, I guess that's it for now. See you at theChristmas party on December 1 and the next club meeting on Wednesday, December 4. -- Robert Gold == TRI-STATE MEET UPDATE -by- LeRoy Rogers The 2003 Tri-State Meet will not be held at the Raton Holiday Classic as originally planned. Hurley recently stayed there three nights on a business trip. It was decided that the motel and their restaurant did not meet the standards that a Corvair enthusiast would expect. The meet is still on, however, and is scheduled for May 30 and 31, 2003. While Hurley was in Raton he checked out other places. It was decided to use the Microtel Motel at 1640 Cedar Street as the host motel. Their rates are $44.95 plus tax for a room with two queen size beds and $53.95 plus tax for a suite which consists of a room with one queen size bed, a kitchenette and a couch that makes into a double bed. When you make reservations mention the Corvair Meet to get these rates. The phone number is 505-445-9100. Two alternate motels are recommended: the Super-8 at 610 Cedar Street, 505-445-2355 and the Motel-6 at 1600 Cedar Street, 505-445-2777. There is also an RV park available in Raton: Summerlan RV Park at 1900 South Cedar, phone 505-445-9536. I do not have 2003 room rates from any of these yet. The banquet will be held at Domingo's at 1903 South Cedar. They will offer three entrees in the $13 to $14 price range. More details to follow. We plan to have a patch for the meet. If you have any ideas for a design, turn them in at or before the January meeting. Bill Reider will accept ideas for a patch. Call him at 299-4597. == Seven Years Ago December 1995 Volume 21 - Number 12 One more time: the cover featured Santa and Rudolph, reproduced from the very first CNM newsletter cover as drawn by Mark Morgan. Our November meeting was a combined pot-luck and auction. The September NMCCC swap meet was a modest success, clearing about $1050, and CNM would receive $100 for two days' worth of gate duty. We had a report on progress on restoring the car to be raffled at the convention. A new edition of Bill Reider's CARE & FEEDING book was hot off the press. Bill McClellan reported that Francis was back in the hospital for a minor tune-up following the major overhaul he had last month. Mark Domzalski reported on a very nice time for his first attendance at the Great Fan Belt Toss. He thanked all who contributed to a great auction and pot luck, with Larry Blair's famous Elk Chili getting high marks. Mark also mentioned national and local news coverage of our convention plans. Bill told how to CARE & FEED your Corvair in the preventative maintenance department. Some tech tips from Click & Clack were pretty much useless except to produce chuckles, cartoons mentioned cars with "engines in the back" and the 1995 Index wrapped up the issue. Fourteen Years Ago December 1988 Volume 14 - Number 12 The cover featured reversed Christmas trees that said "samtsirhC yrreM" so you needed a mirror to read the greeting. VP Tom Martin ran our meeting and learned we had $562 in the bank. Bill Hector's column said Mother Nature clearly prefers engines in the rear, giving as proof the cheetah, the kangaroo and the deer. He said Detroit has been wrong for years, only getting one car right: the Corvair. Our Executive Board suggested events for the coming year, including a garage tour, a rally, a car show, a Tri-State Meet, a picnic, an aspencade and a Christmas party. Tom Martin's "Ptek Ptip" article described how he purchased a car in a distant city, it mysteriously stopped on the way home, he checked everything he could think of to no effect, then finally realized it was -- out of gas! Did Tom ever get formally inducted into the Dummy of the Month Club Twenty-one Years Ago December 1981 Volume 7 Number 12 The cover featured the new stainless-steel-skinned DeLorian sports car -- hey, it had the engine in the rear! Our treasury featured 338 crisp dollar bills, or maybe 33 ten dollar bills plus change. George Morin's tech tip on how the fuel gage sender works, how it goes bad and how to fix it was well received. We discussed how we could help get Corvair clubs established in remote parts of the state. The CNM constitution and amendments was published. Twenty-eight Years Ago December 1974 Volume 1 Number 1 In December we received in the mail the first issue of the club newsletter, edited, typed, copied, folded, stapled, stamped and distributed by club co-founder Mark L. Morgan. There were thirty-five members on the club roster. May your Thanksgiving be blessed with a warm home, family, plenty of food and room on the sofa to strech out. I know Robert will be sawing logs while I putter around cleaning up the dinner table. We will not meet in December. We will all just see each other at the Christmas Brunch at the Officers' Club. Santa's elves have been kind of busy trying to get their workshops in gear and I'm sure there efforts will pay off for the kids. In January we will meet at Rita Gongora's home. We will get to see all the improvements and additions that Steve has made to the backyard. I hope all of you ladies make a resolution to join us as often as you can. It is always a good time! It will be on Sunday December 1, 2002 at 11:00 AM at the Kirtland AFB Officers' Club, the same location as last year. It will be okay if you need to arrive after 12:00 noon. When you go to the Wyoming gate to KAFB be sure to have your driver's license, proof of vehicle insurance and the vehicle registration. For more information, call Rita at 292-5570 or 256-0551. == Subject: Maybe They'll Let Me Into the DOTMC Date: Sat, 09 Nov 2002 17:37:05 -0600 To: virtualvairs@corvair.org From: Dennis & Debbie Pleau (dpleau@efortress.com) Corvairs of New Mexico has an offshoot club called the Dummy of the Month Club. I was never asked to join while I lived in Albuquerque, but I may have written my application last weekend. Last weekend, was dedicated to fixing all the oil leaks on my daily driver Corvair. The largest leak I found, was the blower cover gasket which probably was most of my 250 miles/quart leak. I had some seepage around the pan gasket so I decided to change it with the thick paper gasket lclc recommends for cast Aluminum pans. Well my oil leak went from 250 miles/quart to 50 miles/quart or 1 day whichever came first. Today I borrowed a pan gasket from VV member Garrie Fox and set off to cure the new pan gasket leak. I dropped the pan and proceeded to clean everything up and install the new gasket although I couldn't find anything wrong with the old gasket. When torqueing the pan gasket one bolt pulled at 80"LBS so I again dropped the pan to install a Helicoil. It was then I noticed one side of the pan gasket had never contacted the bottom of the block. The pan was seating up against the shrouding which was not allowing it to seal. After installing the insert, I loosened the shroud and pushed it to the outside a bit and reinstalled the pan making sure it was sealing against the block. I then torqued the pan to 100"LBS and filled it with oil and had no sign of a leak. I'm still not sure this will get me in the DOTMC since the founder and charter member actually put a top shroud and everything above it only to see he had a fan left over at the completion of the repair. He then pulled everything back off and put it together again and still had the fan left over, requiring him to do the job for the third time. Dec 2002 Another year has gone by in the history of our Club. We have gained a few members, lost a few members and kept a lot of members. Many of us are progressing toward the status of "old timers" and, we hope, increasing our wisdom as we increase our years. But many of us are doing less with our Corvairs than we could be doing. Time for New Year's Resolutions! Let's try to participate more in Club activities. Let's try to drive our Corvairs more. Let's keep them in good shape as they gracefully age. We have an extraordinary Club, the best many of us have ever been members of. Let's keep it that way as we try to preserve and enjoy our Corvairs and as we enjoy the company of our Corvair friends! =end=
