The slate of candidates we have so far is: Mark Domzalski President Sally Johnson Vice-president Charles Vertrees Secretary Wendell Walker Treasurer Nominations will be accepted from the floor, and permission will be needed from the nominee. No railroading! Come to the October meeting!. Vote early! Vote often! =cnm= MEETING NOTES SEPTEMBER Jim Pittman President-for-a-few-more-hours Robert Gold called the meeting to order at 7:33 PM. Since Chuck Vertrees was not present, your editor was called upon to record the minutes. Any irregularities or inept attempts at humor should be blamed on your editor and not on Chuck, unless you just want to blame him for being absent. Shortly-to-be-ex-president Robert started off the meeting by saying that the last few weeks have been like a dream come true: he went with Mark Martinek to his first Car Council meeting! He drove up in his official VW Corvair (VW van with Corvair drive train) and looked over the selection of exotic cars at the meeting. They were interesting - you never know what kind of cars you'll see there. Robert felt like he was the Car Council rep in training. Robert continued to the next topic by chanting his mantra "21 - 21 - 21 - 21" to remind us that the upcoming State Fair car show will be "21 - 21 - 21 - 21" that is, Sunday September 21st. Robert has the ribbons and guarantees that if you don't get a ribbon in this show, it will be because you didn't attend. (There were some comments apparently regarding Carl Johnson's cars which your scribe did not hear or record.) President-for-just-a-few-more-minutes Robert reminded us that this is his last meeting as president since he will be in Carlsbad next month. At our next meeting we will have our annual election of officers. Probably there will be a slate of candidates in the next newsletter, but any member can run for office, so volunteer if you wish. Robert said that for him tonight ended four years as an elected officer of club and it has been time well spent. Being an officer is well worth doing. His only regret at leaving office was, he thought he'd have to start taking his own pictures! Sylvan reported on two new members: Sally Johnson joined tonight, and Ray Trujillo joined last month. Dick Foster from White Rock was with us for his first meeting although he has been a member for some time. A visitor was Bobby Bentz from the Air Force who came to see what Corvair excitement he could find. Welcome all, new members, old members, young members, and visitors! Last month's minutes were approved as printed. Treasurer's report: Wendell said we had $817.50 in our checking account, $4,644.76 in our GMAC account, and therefore $5,462.26 in total. New Car Council Representative Robert Gold gave us his Car Council report. The NMCCC swap meet & car show is coming up the weekend of 26-27-28 September. Raffle tickets will be available for a car. There was a car show at Traditions on Aug 31st. It was poorly publicized, not much seemed to be going on there. Mark Martinek noted that the next NMCCC meeting was the same night as our board meeting; it was made earlier to plan for the swap meet & car show. How will CNM participate? It was not well defined. We had no CORSA news from Mark Domzalski as he was not present tonight. Someone passed along information about a 1960 2-door for sale for $500. It was an automatic. A Monza? Anyway, check with Robert for a phone number. Sylvan says a friend in Las Cruces is looking for a '64 Corvair. Someone asked, did anyone know how LeRoy Rogers was doing after his quadruple bypass? Bill Reider said he's back at work after a short time in hospital, and said he was doing quite well and running two or two and a half miles a day. OLD BUSINESS: The August Car Council picnic was a wonderful time. CNM had a good turnout and we enjoyed the picnic and the location and the weather, and it was a treat to see all kinds of old cars. And, supposedly there were more Corvairs present that any other type of car. Tarmo pointed out that Corvairs were well represented at the Fourth of July car show on the plaza. There were lots of nice cars, but typically only one or two of each type. Gordon Johnson reported a big turnout at a car show he attended. It is planned to have a car show at the balloon fiesta this year. Larry Blair said that the city's celebration of the Fourth of July next year will be at the balloon fiesta location. Someone suggested that we could go to Santa Fe for the car show on the Plaza in the morning, then drive down to the balloon fiesta site for the car show in the afternoon. Sylvan reported that Bill and Marian McClellan are moving from their apartment into an assisted living apartment and Bill has tools and parts that he needs to give or sell to CNM members. Contact Bill for more information. NEW BUSINESS: Go to the State Fair Car Show we will meet at the old Furr's parking lot at San Pedro & Central at 7:00 AM on Sunday September 21 - 21 - 21. We will go in together at 7:30. Robert said it's supposed to cost $2.00 per car to get in, but if go in early and together he thinks we'll avoid the $2.00 fee. Wendell discussed photos made by a movie person and said that there will be a maroon Corvair in the new Elvis movie. They also took pictures of his 1963 Cadillac and his Challenger and his 1964 Corvair. Steve Gongora's Rampside was also photographed. Stay tuned for news on whether any of our cars make it into the movie. Sally Johnson wants CNM members to get together and bring their Corvairs! A first opportunity to do this will be the day before the State fair Car Show when we'll meet at the owl cafe (the one at Eubank and Lomas, not the one in San Antonio) on Saturday morning, September 20th for breakfast. We'll meet at 8:30 am. Also, we'll organize a breakfast before or after the balloon fiesta, tentatively October 18th? Stay tuned. Larry suggested that, since the air conditioning was not working and it was rather warm and humid in our meeting room, we could put off his talk on Army combat engineering until next month when it might be cooler. A show of hands indicated the room was pretty evenly divided between "tonight" and "next time" but before anything could be decided.... Mark Martinek pointed out that we really needed to make decisions about the NMCCC swap meet. They need workers for two one-hour shifts on Saturday September 27th: 7 to 8 and 8 to 9. Do we have any volunteers? Four members volunteered. Anyone else who is interested should contact Mark Martinek. Robert said for the car show on Sunday, they'll need ballot counters. Bill Reider says it would take some twenty people to help count. Counting would probably start about 10:00 AM. Do club members want to attend the NMCCC car show? Does anyone want to show a car? If so, be there by 7:00 AM. Bill Reider made another offer to sell the remaining Raton Tri-State T-shirts at exceptional prices. President-for-merely-a-few-more-seconds Robert made an executive decision and declared that Larry's talk would be given at the October meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 8:14 PM and we gratefully moved to the cool outdoors to continue our conversations. =cnm= SEPTEMBER BOARD MINUTES by Chuck Vertrees The meeting was called to order at 17:08 on 9/19/03 at House of Covers. Present were Sylvan Zuercher, Sally Johnson, Geoffrey Johnson, Steve Gongora, Joel Nash, Wendell Walker, Jim Pittman, and Chuck Vertrees. Treasurer reported that CNM has $877.63 in the checking account and $4,644.76 in the GMAC fund for a total worth of $5,522.39. The first thing brought up was when Joel asked how the shirts from the Tri-State were going. He was told that we are selling a few at each meeting and Steve said that he has put an ad on our web site. Possibly we should take some to the Fan Belt toss in November. Apparently the September meeting was cut short because of the heat. I was not aware of this since I was on vacation, seeing my latest great-grandson. It was announced that Larry Blair would repeat his talk on engineering in Viet Nam at a later date if anyone were interested. Elections are coming up at the October meeting. We have a full slate and members are advised that nominations WILL be accepted from the floor. However, if you want to nominate someone be sure that is cleared with the person that you want to nominate. The Owl Cafe breakfast on Saturday morning was mentioned. Also the day after, Sunday, is the State Fair car show. As brought up at a previous board meeting, having some kind of award certificate for our speakers was again discussed. Steve said he has tried to work on one but has been just swamped this month. We also need to thank Mark Martinek for his long service as our representative on the New Mexico Car Council. It was suggested that we need to set up a permanent committee for the Francis Boydston Award. It should have members on it who are familiar with the Tri-State meetings. October 4th is the date for the next cleanup of "Old Route 66." There will not be a regular meeting before that date, so an arrangement needs to be made to contact members so that they will show up. Time is 09:00. Let this be the reminder. The Car Council swap meet is coming up. Those who signed up to help, at the last meeting, make a note and show up. Those who were not able to sign up because they were gone (like me) should contact Robert Gold. We were discussing the recognition of club newsletters by CORSA. Jim wrote a letter to CORSA and had missed that they printed it. If you did not see it, check your latest CORSA Communique. Bill McClellan sent in $35.00 for his dues, although he cannot attend the meetings. Many of the new members did not know Bill. He was a great member and would help anyone. If you needed to know anything about welding, he was the one to ask. This brought up a discussion about creating a life member category with a certificate, etc. Wendell Walker made a motion that he be declared a life member. Nobody seconded the motion. We probably need to set up a group to consider revising our By Laws and Constitution. In the past Mark Domzalski has expressed an interest in such a group. At this point I told my LBJ joke, and the board insisted that I add it to the minutes, so here goes. One day a Texas State Trooper stopped a Lincoln going way over the speed limit. When he walked up to the tinted driver's window, it rolled down a little way. "May I see your driver's license please," the trooper said. A voice from inside said, "Son, do you know whom you have stopped?" "No Sir," said the trooper. The voice from inside said, "Son, just check the front plate on this car." The trooper walked to the front and looked and there was a big license plate that said LBJ. "Oh My God!" said the trooper, and the voice from inside said, "And don't you forget it!" So there is my joke such as it is. In discussing ideas for talks at the meetings, Sally suggested something about painting. Although we have had some in the far past, it was suggested that since Joe Trujillo, our sponsor, is restoring a Corvair and is planning on having the Galles paint shop do the painting, possibly someone from the Galles shop could give us a talk. Sally will also check with Bruce Phillips at Professional Paint Supply. There was no information about a possible October tour; Tarmo Sutt will be contacted on Sunday at the Fair. It was suggested that we contact Joe Trujillo and see if there is some activity that CNM could do with Galles that would help show our appreciation. They may have a sale in the future where we could display some of our nicer Corvairs. Steve announced that past member (Boyd) has a 1964 turbo coupe in town with his son that he would like to sell. The son can be reached at 261-5515 and the car can be seen at 6500 Martin Court NE. The meeting slowly came to an end and we adjourned at 18:15. =cnm= FROM THE DRIVER'S (HOT) SEAT Robert L Gold I've lived in New Mexico now for over 20 years. During that time I've learned there are a couple of things that you can count on here. First, there will always be the question, "Red or Green?" and secondly, it will rain during the State Fair. I was pondering those truths recently as I tried to make some last minute repairs to my cars as I prepared for the upcoming State Fair Car Show. I guess the corollary to the rain thing is that we don't get rain on the day of the car show. We've had some cold mornings, but it has always been a sunny day for us. Talk of the Fair Car Show leads naturally to a new event that will be taking place the day before the show on September 20th. Sally Johnson has organized a "Show and Shine" to get ready for the Fair Show. The informal get together will take place at the Owl Cafe on Eubank near Lomas NE (not San Antonio, NM, Jerry) at 8:00 am. We'll have a little breakfast and then swap stories as we admire our Corvairs. The idea is to celebrate our cars by bringing a Corvair to the event. I'm planning to drive my seldom seen v8 that has been named CORNADO in honor of the Corvair Toronado mix. Joel Nash planted the bug in my ear about getting a vanity tag for the car and I now have CORNADO emblazened on the back. I hope to see you at the breakfast. I've discovered that sometimes the nicest part of a car event is something that you haven't anticipated. This has been true for me when I attend the monthly Board Meetings and I get to see the various cars that Steve Gongora has in his shop to be worked on. I position myself at the meeting table so I can gaze upon Steve's latest project. Well that unexpected benefit showed up again when I attended the last Car Council meeting with outgoing rep Mark Martinek. I had heard of the Old Car Garage, but I hadn't seen it. Well, the Council meets right in the shop among some of the nicest cars I've ever seen. These are those high ticket items that mere mortals like me will never own, but I did enjoy looking at them. I want to take this opportunity to thank Mark for his years of dedicated service to CNM by serving as the Council Rep. I only hope I can do an adequate job as the new representative -- I know I won't be up to Mark's standard. Oh yes, I think I need to thank Mark for his presentation to me of the official Car Council cap at the last club meeting. That reminds me of a tradition at my college fraternity. The president was called "Master," so some president in the dawn of time had made up a sweatshirt with the name Master on it. That sweatshirt was then passed down to each successive president. By the time I got it the shirt was pretty ragged. Ah the price we pay for tradition. I've got an idea, how 'bout the club build up a Corsa Turbo Convertible that will be passed from one President to the next so the chief executive will represent the club in style. That might result in more people being interested in being president. Too bad I didn't think of that when I became president two years ago!! That brings up the fact that this will be my last column as club president. I might still need to write one more column after the upcoming election, but this is my last exposition as your fearless leader. As I mentioned at the last meeting, the four years I have served as Vice-President and then President of the club have gone by amazingly fast. I really enjoyed my time as President. This is in spite of the fact that I vowed before I first ran for Vice-President not to run for President. It's such a great club that it just seemed natural to continue on up the ladder. I recommend the experience to everyone (including my wife!). I guess this train of thought leads directly to say that we have an election coming up at the October meeting. There should be a list of proposed candidates in this newsletter, but if you have any interest in running for an office make sure you speak up at the meeting. I forgot to mention another perk of being the CNM President. When Bill Reider updates his "Care and Feeding" manual you get to have your name in the book among the list of Club presidents. Hey, I have to use whatever I can to sell you on being president! Anyway, thanks for being such good sports during my term. Lastly, I mentioned in my last column that Larry Blair would be speaking on engineering in Vietnam at the September meeting. Due to climate problems (it was hot as h**l in the meeting room) that talk has been postponed until the upcoming October meeting. I still stand by what I said about Larry being a captivating speaker. So please make an effort to come an hear Larry. I guess that's all I have for this month. I encourage you to attend the next CNM meeting that will be held at 7:30 on Wednesday, October 1. I won't be able to attend, but I'm sure Joel Nash will do a fine job at making sure neither he nor I are reelected. -- Robert Gold =cnm= ============================================================================ C O R V A I R S o f N E W M E X I C O C O M I N G E V E N T S ============================================================================ | | | | | O c t o b e r | N o v e m b e r | D e c e m b e r | | | | | | : : : 1 2 3 4 | : : : : : : 1 | : 1 2 3 4 5 6 | | 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 | 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 | 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 | | 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 | 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 | 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 | | 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 | 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 | 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 | | 26 27 28 29 30 31 : | 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 | 28 29 30 31 : : : | | : : : : : : : | 30 : : : : : : | : : : : : 2003 | ============================================================================ Wed 1st Oct 7:30 PM Regular Meeting - GALLES CHEVROLET 1601 Lomas NE Sat 4th Oct ....... We had an unofficial one before which one of our members had posted, but it went away. CORSA gave PPCC a site, and I put this together tonight. It's far from done. Jon Anderson has volunteered to be webmaster so I'm going to transfer it all to him. I will finish the picture pages which I have listed but don't have links from yet. Note, I have a link to the CNM web site. Check it out at http://www.corvair.org/chapters/chapter809/ Dennis =cnm= SEVEN YEARS AGO Jim Pittman Seven Years Ago - October 1996 Volume 22 - Number 10 The cover showed a Mark Morgan fantasy: a Forward Control, articulated steam locomotive. President Mark Domzalski ran our meeting. Treasurer Will Davis said we had $1541 in the bank, not counting convention funds. Bill Reider's Car Council report said that the state fair people called up the VMCCA president to apologize for the misunderstanding about the car show at the state fail and to assure him that next year VMCCA cars will be welcome. Several car shows around town were mentioned. Mark brought a busted input shaft for us to marvel at. Ollie Scheflow had an appointment for safety training for the Route 66 cleanup. And, your editor reported on his participation in the first cleanup event on September 14. He said that the negative aspects of dealing with all that nasty and thoughtless littering was offset by the beautiful vegetation and rocky mountain scenery. A major article this month was "Keystone Blues" by Mark Morgan who continued his "Driving in..." series with his experiences in Pennsylvania. I can't adequately summarize Mark's article here except to say that this series of articles addresses a lot more about a location than just driving, and they deserve to be re-read from time to time. Especially if you tend to think that New Mexico drivers are really bad. No, says Mark, drivers elsewhere are often much worse! Fourteen Years Ago October 1989 Volume 15 - Number 10 The cover drawing showed how to remove that pesky late model headlight switch shaft; easy if you know how and have small, flexible fingers. The State Fair was to have a collection of 1964 and older cars, but our econo-run was set for the same date. We had a committee to decide on whether to send our newsletter to other clubs. We planned an Aspencade to the Santa Fe area this year with a picnic at Hyde Park. President Bill Hector listed the ten most common questions he got when driving around in his Corvair. Tom Martin's LA VENTANA column focused on your editor, following his career from college to Air Force to graduate school to computer expert of sorts. Tech tips swiped from other clubs (yes, we used to publish tech tips years ago) included how to guard against getting a defective fuel pump, how fuel pumps work, how to clean a cloudy convertible window, door panel clips from Horizons or Colts, and using diesel fuel as a parts cleaner. Twenty-one Years Ago October 1982 Volume 8 Number 10 The cover showed Norm, Robin, Francis and LeRoy and a nice early model. We had $394 in the bank and a batch of just-arrived Clarks' Catalogs to distribute. CNM members formally applied for the 1987 CORSA convention - we did not get it. Jack and Sharon Bryan hosted a picnic at Doc Long's campsite in the Sandias that we all enjoyed. A new Corvair club was starting up in Roswell. Tech tips included a chassis tuning chart (thanks, Tucson club) and an article on keeping your turbo carb working right (thanks, San Diego club) not to mention (thanks, Houston club) a paragraph on the sorrow you'd feel if you bought shock absorbers that were too long for your car and they beat the mounting brackets to death. Twenty-eight Years Ago October 1975 Volume 1 Number 9 The cover highlighted the Denver CORSA convention with a photo of the "Nader Hater" Corvair. Steve Gongora provided an excellent article on the convention, as well as a report on his first try at driving his Corvair in an autocross. Not one but two V-8 Corvairs showed up at our meeting. We were ordering front license plates with the club logo. Nick from Albuquerque Glass spoke to us on getting windshields and window glass for Corvairs and offered member discounts. Jim Pittman reported on a new book by Richard Finch, HOW TO KEEP YOUR CORVAIR ALIVE, and recommended it to accompany your copy of Bill Fisher's HOW TO HOT-ROD CORVAIR ENGINES. James Breeden gave us a tech tip on the difference between early and late throwout bearing collars and described the expensive noises that could result if the wrong one was installed! Note that "early" includes the 1965 and "late" is the Saginaw-equipped 1966-1969 models. =cnm= NMCCC REPORT - 17 SEP 03 Mark Martinek 1. President Jim Clements call the poorly attend (14) meeting to order at 7:39 PM. 2. There was no treasurer's report. 3. JD reported on upcoming events. (See enclosure 1). 4. Michael Madlener reported on the upcoming 3rd Annual Balloon Fiesta Car Display on 5 Oct 03. There is no entrance fee and entries will have free entry into the Balloon Fiesta. See enclosure 2 for entry requirements. 5. The remainder of the meeting was about the Swap Meet, Car Show, Auction to be held at Sandia Motor Sports complex. The council voted & approved splitting a one Sunday newspaper ad cost with Sandia Motor Sports. A $700.00 limit was placed on the ad. Everything was preceding according to the plans. Eighty swap meet spaces had been presold. There are over sixty autos entered in the car auction. The car corral is canceled due to a lack of interest. The Ford Mustang will be raffled off. Enough tickets have been sold to make the break even point. CNM volunteered to be Swap Meet Gate Guards Saturday morning, 7:00 to 9:00. Del Patton was notified. 6. The meeting adjourned at 8:15 PM. I see the ravages of age every day at the shop (not only by looking in the mirror either). The most common aging is rubber products. Weatherstrip gets the sun and ozone constantly. An occasional wipe with a rubber restorer or even vinyl preservatives will keep the rubber soft and pliable. The engine and fuel systems are the other really tough place on rubber. Todays gasoline works on rubber fuel lines, making them hard and brittle. Having vapor lock problems OR smelling fuel after shutting the engine down? Look at the rubber line at the back of the car over the rear axle. I see these every day that are so hard that the rubber actually will break in two pieces like breaking a pretzel. Hopefully there are no rubber fuel lines in the engine bay, if you are using a rubber fuel line check it constantly for breaks. Leaking fuel on a hot engine (or a spark jumping from a plug wire) will ignite quickly. The rubber connector hoses from the balance tube to the heads will also get very hard from the heat. When the hoses get hard they tend to lose the seal to the head and a vacuum leak occurs. The leak will screw up your idle and make the engine run hot too. If you have a 1964 and later engine then you normally have a harmonic balancer (crankshaft pulley). There is a rubber strip bonded between the two halves of the pulley. A combination of heat/fuel leakage from the fuel pump and oil from either spillage or a leak will cause the rubber to lose its' bond and the outer ring will come loose. Among the disasters are the timing mark moves and even worse; the outer ring comes loose and rubs a hole in the oil filter. If this happens while driving, it can be quite a mess and possibly lead to an engine failure. Both the outside paint as well as the interior will age too. Frequent washing and waxing of the outside and vinyl softeners on the interior will help a lot. Keeping the carpet clean will stop the dirt from being ground into the pile. In fact keeping the glass clean will go a long ways in your mind to seem like the car is still clean and shiney. It is my opinion that every time I clean one of my cars it seems to just run better. Along with cleaning the outside and vacuuming the inside, don't forget to clean the engine and the underside of the powertrain too. Treat your suspension to a lube on a regular basis. I shoot the rubber bushings with a silicone spray. It not only keeps the rubber pliable and not squeaking, it also keeps the fasteners on the suspension lubed a little too, making it easier to remove or loosen a bolt underneath. While you have silicone spray and/or WD-40 in your hand, take the wiring plugs apart and spray the contacts, check the battery terminals too. There are several wiring plugs, the one in the engine bay on early models is the most troublesome but the same plug on a late will get corroded too. Remember there are plugs under the dash and don't forget the small plugs like the oil pressure switch and temp wires. GOT MAG WHEELS? Check your lug nut torque occasionally. Unlike a steel wheel, the alloy wheels tend to change with the heat cycles of the brakes etc. I find my alloys on the Spyder move once in a while, usually after a hard drive in the mountains. The metallic brake shoes generate a lot more heat than organic linings too. The real message in all of the above is this: just maintain the car, pay a little attention to all the parts of your car, and DRIVE YOUR CAR -- letting your baby sit in a garage is worse than using it every day. =cnm= SUBJECT: TRI-STATE HOTEL INFORMATION Date: Mon, 18 Aug 2003 20:47:10 -0500 From: Dennis & Debbie Pleau ( ddpleau AT earthlink DOT net ) Jim, Here's the information on the rooms for next year's Tri-State Dennis Date: Mon, 18 Aug 2003 16:35:55 -0600 From: "Brown Ken" (KBrown AT lps DOT k12 DOT co DOT us) To: (lwredvair AT msn DOT com) Cc: (ddpleau AT earthlink DOT net) Please tell your members that they have to mention "Corvair Club" for May 21 Friday through checkout Sunday May 23, 2004. They can come earlier or stay later for the same rates. I think our members have failed to mention the Corvair Club block for the Tri State and they were told no rooms are available as they are saving 54 for us. The cost is $50.00 per night tax included and only 13 non-smoking rooms are available. Six of our members toured the hotel in eight different rooms and could smell no smoke so I think they do a wonderful job of cleaning without spraying that awful perfume substance. We are excited about the chance to make this the largest turnout ever for TriState and are working on a lot of family and driver events and fun. If you would be so kind to forward this message to the President of the Albuquerque club , I would appreciate it. If your members have any trouble after doing the above steps, please ask them to call back on the 800 number and dial extension 2199 and either talk to or leave a message with the Special Events manager Jenn who is great. She will take care of any problems we might encounter. Thanks for the picnic yesterday. Due to things I had on my plate I was late getting there but everyone enjoyed a good time.
